Why don't people dress smartly any more?

More and more recently, I have noticed that people in general just look scruffy whether for work or leisure. My DH is a prime example of this. He always used to wear a suit and tie or trousers with jacket and tie for work - he looks lovely in a suit - this was one of the things which attracted me to him! Now it's jeans and a t-shirt for work every day (he works in an office so it's not physical work) - and he just looks as if he has fallen out of bed! He tells me that 'nobody' bothers to dress smartly for work any more. Why have standards fallen so far?

I work in admin at a bank, I wear black jeans every day, with a smart-ish top but then a hoodie and trainers. Some of my colleagues wear leggings and a tshirt, some wear smart dresses.

The only people I ever see wearing suits are upper management, and even then that's only if they have external meetings.

I don't see the point in smart dress codes if you're not client facing. No one gives a shit what you're wearing as long as you don't flash them, we can easily adjust for temperature, and comfortable shoes all round. Plus I can have one wardrobe for every day, rather than weekday and weekend clothes being separate.

I hate leggings. They're not flattering for me at all with my big fat bum. I also worry about getting a camel toe.

Teateaandmoretea · 01/02/2020 10:26

I look at old films and the women are so tiny.. Slim. Their clothes fitted because they were made for them personally. They looked well groomed and glamorous

A thread about what a bloke wears at work is seemingly an opportunity for a bit of fat shaming of women Hmm

Suits are uncomfortable and an utter PITA. Heels are uncomfortable and difficult to walk in. It's progress.

Dressing up for me at work is a t-shirt material dress with or without tights and flat shoes/ boots dependent on the time of year. Comfy and straight into the washing machine, as long as I manage it carefully no ironing either. Jeans are also fine if I want.

At mine though OP people definitely are quietly judged for rocking up looking scruffy the expectation is definitely smart casual and some men don't seem to get that as nothing is actually said.

RuffleCrow · 01/02/2020 12:51

I guess it was easier to be tiny and slim before palm oil started being pumped into almost everything. I looked for a margarine that didn't contain it at Sainsburys. Not possible. It's butter or palm oil, folks, or dry bread. Or drizzling bitter old olive on everything. But i digress.

I don’t see it but then I work in the City and majority of my colleagues are well turned out. I pride myself on looking good and frequently get compliments on my bags/jewellery/coats/shoes Wink

Shamazing · 01/02/2020 15:45

@RuffleCrow I've never used anything other than butter. I just try not to have loads of it.

I work in a school and staff have a dress code. No very short skirts, no leggings or jeans, no low cut tops. Men have to wear a shirt and tie and no jeans either.

If you do 'deviate' the Head will pull you to one side to remind you of expectations. She'll also remind staff that if they're telling students that they have to stick to the uniform dress code then we must too. Fair enough really.

hotcrossbun4321 · 01/02/2020 17:21

I have a very casual workplace and do wish there was a bit more of a dress code - mostly to keep a bit more separation between work and home clothes (probably feel this more atm as I'm not happy at work).
It's also easier in the mornings if there's more of a black trousers/skirt type dress code. But we're a cool trendy type of company, so that wouldn't fit our image.

My natural style is quite tailored/preppy/put together so I struggle to do trendy casual!

YouStupidBoy · 01/02/2020 17:27

I am pleased I have a smarter dress code for work because of the above; I like work to be separate to my own time and wearing different clothes helps me to keep that demarcation between work and free time.

@MephistophelesApprentice

Eh? Shock

YY!

When ‘dress down Friday’ was introduced at work, iI found I didn’t like it - wearing’my’ clothes (as opposed to my work ‘uniform’) seemed an uncomfortable conflation of the boundary between office / my office persona and home / ‘me’

Aridane · 01/02/2020 18:13

Why would anyone care what other people wear?

So they can be judgy and sneering and tragically nostalgic over a past that's gone.

Or so that they can post on S&B!

HelgaHere1 · 01/02/2020 18:35

Why would anyone care what anybody says - just ignore and get on with your life.

DustyMaiden · 01/02/2020 18:41

I thought young men we’re getting smarter, my DS 19 wears suits or blazers, pocket squares and ties.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 01/02/2020 18:54

I was once persuaded to dress 'smartly' - I could not properly move without destroying the 'smart' look. I felt caged. I wear jeans, and shirts of good quality (fairtrade / second hand) not tucked in and shoes that do not harm my feet. This does not minder the quality of my work.

I come from a tailor's family - dressing smartly means dressing smartly for the occasion, every occasion - more clothes, more money spent, more damage to the environment.
And only women get judged when there is not enough variation in their outfits.

Roominmyhouse · 01/02/2020 19:23

Surely it’s about how you wear things. Some people can look a scruffy mess in a suit, and some can look ‘smart’ in jeans and a jumper.
