Tips for dealing with greasy hair

My hair is always greasy!

I'm so sick of it. I use dry shampoo sometimes but it doesn't have much of an effect. I don't touch it a lot (it's always up in a ponytail/bun), so I don't know where I'm going wrong.

does anyone have any tips? I'm going to wash it before I go to bed. I have heard using conditioner before shampoo helps.

Is this true? Will try anything at the moment!

Anyone? Smile

Mine stopped being so greasy when I left it a lot longer between washes. I was on maternity leave with a newborn which seemed to reset it. I appreciate that’s not an option if you have to leave the house Grin

Have you tried a clarifying shampoo?

ohfos · 29/01/2020 21:17

@AllTheCakes Unfortunately not possible as my hair resembles a chip pan! Sad

I did used to use a Pantene Pro V Clarifying Shampoo & Conditioner but found it stopped working after using it for a length of time? Then I was just back at square 1 again!

You might need to vary your products until you find something that works. I was told Pantene had something in it that coats the hair so it won't be helping.

I have long fine hair that tends to get greasy but found using better products and washing less frequently made a big difference. I use tigi for brunette hair (big bottles in home bargains) and batiste dry shampoo (other brands I've found make it greasier). Shampoo twice and conditioner only mid lengths down - nowhere near roots. Rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Once it's dry if it looks greasy use the dry shampoo. Leave it in a minute then blast with a hair dryer to get rid of any powdery residue. You need to try and break the cycle of washing everyday - it does make a huge difference and I do mine every 2-3 days now (3 mostly).

Another thing you can try is reversing your products, so go in shower with your hair brushed smooth and condition first, then shampoo focusing on roots and rinse thoroughly. It gets rid of heavy conditioner but left mine manageable enough to comb through easily.

Don’t condition your hair. I’m convinced it’s just not necessary for many people.

haverhill · 29/01/2020 22:18

Oh, and change to silicone- free everything, even styling products.

Hercwasonaroll · 29/01/2020 22:18

Wash it less.
Bite the bullet and start leaving it longer.
I did the same as a PP and left it while on mat leave and now only was 2x per week if that. I can get away with 5 days at a push.

I would have previously said my hair was like yours. That I couldn't possibly leave it and I HAD to wash it daily. When I couldn't wash it daily I found it wasn't that bad!

TheSubtleArt · 29/01/2020 22:19

Elvive shampoo & conditioner with clay- the light green bottles- it's revolutionary in this household with greasy haired teens!!

WeeM · 29/01/2020 22:20

First thing I’d try is ditching the Pantene-if I use it once my hair looks like a chip pan. I don’t buy any shampoo that contains panthenol as a result as it just coats my hair. Currently I like the herbal essence silicon/paraben free one.
The hairdresser also told me to try and stick to shampoos that are clear rather than creamy and I think that helps too. I’ve also heard that putting dry shampoo on as soon as you’ve washed it is better than waiting til your hair is actually greasy although I’ve not tried that yet.

WeeM · 29/01/2020 22:22

Oh yes that clay shampoo is good! And I only put conditioner on the ends, keep it away from my scalp.

OhWifey · 29/01/2020 22:23

Second the L'Oréal Clay shampoo. Really makes a difference

ExpectingToFly · 29/01/2020 22:25

Highlights are pretty much the only thing that stops my hair being so greasy. My hair is so fine thst the highlights seem to thicken it up. This set is absolutely brilliant for shine and bounce! Hair doesn't feel greasy. Hope this helps Smile

I like the Aldi clarifying shampoo and only washing my hair every other day. My hairdresser said to only uae shampoo that's for volume, never moisture if you have greasy hair. I also condition before shampoo, and conditioner only on the ends.

LouisaJenny · 29/01/2020 22:26

Aldi do a fab shampoo. It looks like the Aussie one. I think its the ‘Mighty’ one.

I used to wash my hair every single day without fail but now I can go 3 days before washing.

cousinboneless · 29/01/2020 22:26

Do you have oily skin also?
I have to wash my hair daily otherwise it's thick with grease in less than 24 hours. For the last 15 years. My skin is extremely oily too. Mattifying primer, foundation and a lot of powder. It's an endless cycle.

Muminabun · 29/01/2020 22:27

Another vote for the herbal essence shampoo.

Qwertyguerty · 29/01/2020 22:28

Use a no-poo shampoo at the roots only, rinse, then dilute some apple cider vinegar with water and rinse hair with it. This combo saved my greasy do many a time!

cookiemonster5 · 29/01/2020 22:29

Dry shampoo and washing less frequent. Yes you will have to put up with a few days of rubbish hair till it gets better.

If you wash everyday then stretch it to 2 days. Then 3. I was my hair twice a week and it never looks greasy till day 3 when I stuck it up. Put in dry shampoo at night to soak up the oils as they appear then a bit more in the morning.

It's the only way to make it better. And go for a better quality shampoo with less silicones and only condition the ends never up past the bottom of your ears.

pooboobsleeprepeat · 29/01/2020 22:35

Look into sulphate & paraben free shampoos- lo’s poo method. An Apple cider vinegar rinse would be a good idea too.
Normal shampoos have silicone that coats the hair strands making it look shiney and nice at first but then it all gets clogged up making it heavy and greasy.

WindyMiller1020 · 29/01/2020 22:35

The only thing that stopped my hair being greasy was being on roaccutane for acne!

I went down to washing my hair once a week after going my whole life washing it every single day.

I've been off roaccutane a few months now and I'm back to having to wash it every day again, I can go 36 hours at an absolute push.

I've found that I cant use the same shampoo for too long otherwise it's like my hair gets "used" to it and doesnt work anymore itswim? Also only use conditioner on the ends.

I once had a shower at my FIL house and he'd run out of shampoo so used the squeezy handwash stuff as I was desperate and it made my hair so shiny! It must have completely stripped my hair - wouldn't like to use it other than in desperate times though! Haha

RyvitaBrevis · 29/01/2020 22:37

Volumising shampoo tends to work better and won't weigh it down. I like the Aussie stuff. Only condition the ends, and only if they need it. Try adding a little dry shampoo every day after washing and in the evening.

I am not convinced by people who say to wash it less frequently. I have tried this approach several times for weeks at a time and it's never worked for me. The only thing that has helped my greasy hair is pregnancy.

BackyardChickens · 29/01/2020 22:43

Never use conditioner on the roots, only the ends.

chocolatespiders · 29/01/2020 22:46

'I love juicy' shampoo from Lush is fab. Expensive but you only need a tiny amount so it lasts ages.

GreyBird84 · 29/01/2020 23:18

Keep trying With dry shampoo.
I used to wash my hair everyday but when pregnant with no 2 I grew out my fringe & started using batiste brunette dry shampoo.
I haven’t washed my hair since Sunday. A wee bit of Dry shampoo - let it sit a minute or 2 before gently rubbing in with your fingers then comb - et viola. Today it’s in a ponytail without any need for hairspray etc & honestly it’s grand.

I’ve been using beach shampoos from boots & they are great.

Re skin- since using the ordinary nitrimicide (spelling?) I can get away without make up which i really only used for keeping oil at bay unless out. Game changer!!!!

Blingismything · 30/01/2020 11:54

If you have a fringe, wash just your fringe every day. Also the dry shampoo at night is good.
