Should large busted ladies avoid high necks?

TableNiner · 26/01/2020 09:30

For what seems like forever, the advice for big norked ladies has been to avoid high necks, which can create a ‘shelf’ and go for v neck or low scoop neck. Whilst I don’t think this is not true, I’m starting to feel less stylish in that type of top.

I am a 30FF with a long, slightly ageing face and body and I feel like having more skin exposed drags my face down and it also looks less ‘sharp’ and modern. Seems to look better if I actually cover up around my décolletage and break the line up with a blazer or cardigan. Also cosier for this time of year, I wouldn’t go as a high as a roll neck as I feel like I am being strangled but something like this which previously I would have avoided like the plague: www.jaeger.co.uk/compact-knit-t-shirt-47b716

I know there’s the option of a big necklace but not sure statement necklaces are all that fashionable at the moment.

Does anyone else have this dilemma and what are you wearing these days?

Hmm I'm sceptical. Have yet to see a turtleneck that does not make me look like this, and I don't think it's the most flatttering look ever: www.aceshowbiz.com/events/Kim+kardashian/kim-kardashian-departs-her-home-03.html

Baaaahhhhh · 27/01/2020 14:58

KatharinaRosalie Ha ha ha, yes, that's what I look like too Grin.

Another good look, and just read a pp, which I do a lot, is buy a fitted ie: waisted shirt, on which of course in my body size you cannot possibly do up the buttons, but put a cami underneath.

I am 30GG and I wear a cashmere polo-neck, I have several - I am tall with a long neck and narrow frame and wear a damn good bra...I don't look like I have a shelf either - I look in proportion.

PhoneLock · 27/01/2020 15:10

Looking for a pic of someone looking good in a black polo, I came across this...

Definitely never wear ribbed regardless of neck.

DimplesMcGee · 27/01/2020 15:43

I still wear scoop necks and v necks - you can definitely find them in the shops. I’d rather wear something that suits me than something that’s on trend and makes me look bad. Crew necks really don’t look nice on my 36GGs. But I’m not in the first flush of youth any more, maybe I’d feel different if I were still 25.

Shmithecat2 · 27/01/2020 15:49

It's all about the bra. Get yourself measured correctly (Boob or Bust is a revelation) and you can pretty much wear any style of top.

DimplesMcGee · 27/01/2020 15:51

I have been measured properly and they still don’t suit me. Not every style will suit every person! I’m fairly short and I don’t won’t to appear all boob.

CatUnderTheStairs · 27/01/2020 15:54

If you've got a waist you can pretty much wear anything. So a turtle or poloneck will look good.

I have a thick waist, big boobs and can look very much like a formidable lady in full sail if I'm not careful.

Scarves help but aren't v fashionable. Big jewelry ditto. Love a v neck and am devastated to hear they are out. Still going to wear them .

MaxAmount · 27/01/2020 15:59

I think I have a long body and a small waist which helps. Generally though - look in the mirror - if you like it, then wear it! My boobs annoyed me more when I was younger, the bra makes all the difference for me!

TableNiner · 27/01/2020 21:34

Interesting range of views, thanks everyone! Just shows the rules are there are no rules and we must all find what works for us. Totally agree a good bra is vital.

I wear them and think they look good on me - I'm a 32dd but very tall and with a long, up and down body

In the olden days when I was heavier, I couldn't wear them.

I really like them, but I do also have a strangulation issue

JaceLancs · 27/01/2020 23:31

I can’t wear high necks for a combination of reasons
Short torso
Chunky
Big boobs
Feel strangled
However due to short torso long or low neckline especially v and I’m popping out!
I love a slash or boat or square neck
Big cowls for winter
I can also get away with round, crew, low crew or small v

JMAngel1 · 28/01/2020 07:32

The latest in neckline for spring summer is square neck so don't worry, there will be loads flooding the shops. They're the classic 80s shape with a wide square.

JMAngel1 · 28/01/2020 07:55

V necks are not out! Ceck out Sincerely Jules summer feed on Ista - cool light grey v neck tees over battered shorts - gorgeous.

MaxAmount · 28/01/2020 08:29

It's not so much a neck style being "out" it's just being bored with it and feeling it's just old and a bit stale. If you like it wear it, I have put v necks (apart from v neck jumpers with nothing under except a vest top and bra) in the same place as scoop necks - I just don't feel good in them anymore.

woodhill · 29/01/2020 11:00

I still like scoop necks so I will continue to wear them. They tend to be plain t-shirt type tops in cotton.

I get hot around my neck area so they are ideal.

My concern is trying to buy cotton to wearSmile

I do wear the odd button shirt but avoid the patch pocket ones

ClientQueen · 29/01/2020 11:40

I wear v/scoop necks. Can't do polo or high neck. 32DD/E is relatively small but once you get to a 34K like me it starts looking ridiculous

Supersimkin2 · 29/01/2020 18:41

V necks are coming back. Yay.

museumum · 29/01/2020 18:47

I don’t wear “high” necks as such but a relaxed round neck is perfect. I feel waaay too “booby” and quite out of date in v necks unless they are shirts.

Overtheknee · 30/01/2020 22:58

Do your measurements and put them into a body shape calculator and it will tell you the shape you are and from there you can look at how to dress for it. There’s more to it than just your boob size.

NightsOfCabiria · 30/01/2020 23:09

This is why i had a breast reduction ...

V-necks are so dated, as are statement necklaces, indoor scarves and a contrasting cami worn under the v-neck.

I like a crew neck or turtle neck. Slash or boat neck at a push. Cowel necks belong with scoop necks and square necks.

managedmis · 31/01/2020 01:58

Love that website, phonelock

RoseyPeas · 31/01/2020 09:48

@PhoneLock Grin that website is hilarious - definitely going to make my own Xmas jumper this year!

woodhill · 31/01/2020 11:51

That website is very helpful.

It's American but the minimiser bra part is very helpful.

I don't think I will be buying crew necks anytime soon.

Not overly keen on square necks either
