Can someone explain Toast to me?

I'm reading an article in the Telegraph, a man's story about going transgender, and he talked about wearing a Toast skirt.

I have never owned anything from Toast and have seen it in Peter Jones and not understood why people like it. I went on their site today and it all looks awful. It looks aggressively unattractive to me - I don't get it!

Not being disingenuous - please can someone explain the appeal as I am honestly interested.

I have a toast dress. Shirt style. Pockets . Block printed. Very well made and it receives many compliments. It just looks like a quality item and is so comfortable.

Notsureabouthis · 25/01/2020 21:33

I have three things from Toast- a jacket, a top and a jumpsuit. The quality is beautiful and they use mainly natural fabrics. They are not overtly feminine clothes but are more subtly sensual in the fabric and the style.

Notsureabouthis · 25/01/2020 21:34

I’ve just bought this and its heavenly

Oh god don’t indulge that twat by reading him.

BestIsWest · 25/01/2020 21:37

It’s much nicer on than it looks on the website.

thedevilinablackdress · 25/01/2020 22:36

Generally good quality, a lot of natural fibres. Doesn't date too quickly IMO. Lots of people like it, lots of people don't. Arty, bohemian, unstructured.

Growingboys · 26/01/2020 00:07

Ok thanks all - I shall now stop and try something on next time I'm paaaing the Toast racks (ha).

And I know what you mean @JayAlfredPrufrock but I can't not read him. His description of what he wore to meet his consultant sounded so awful, I had to google it to be sure!

I always see it as a sort of Fat Face but for architects. Probably not a very helpful description.

Unrelated but if anyone is into podcasts, the Toast podcast series 'a creative practice' i thought was a joy- follows six women in different creative pursuits - a print maker, garden designer, painter, composer, an author and I think a singer. Probably not selling that either but I was pleased to stumble upon it.

Chienloup · 26/01/2020 01:55

As others have said, Toast clothes are beautifully made in quality fabrics, and are timeless cuts.

ToftheB · 26/01/2020 07:38

I love Toast. I wish I could afford to have more of their stuff. I appreciate that it's not sexy, or even very smart - but it's well made, interesting, ethical and has a sort of 'Land Girl' vibe that I enjoy.
I also like the idea of buying fewer, better made things that all go together and last for a long time.

BikeRunSki · 26/01/2020 07:43

I love Toast, but the clothes just don’t fit me. Waistskn dresses are too high, tops are too short and trousers are too narrow for my “athletic”, bulbous calf muscles. But fabulous quality, timeless styling, natural fibres.

CatUnderTheStairs · 26/01/2020 07:50

The clothes dont fit me, I’m apple shaped and menopausal and they just make me look drab.

Friend has some and she looks fabulous.

I think it has to be seen on.

And the guy in the telegrsph, don’t get me started, he really seems to think being a woman is about make up and dresses, I think he’s hav3 saved himself a lot of trouble if he’s just dressed up as a woman.

Lojoh · 26/01/2020 08:05

Yeah it's the fabric. I just can't stand most clothes now, but Toast pieces are much more likely to be cut from substantial, sensual, beautifully made cloth. Toast to me is for things like corduroys, tweed trousers, silk shirts, and jumpers. The jumpers!!

LizziesTwin · 26/01/2020 08:09

I can’t wear Toast, I’m hourglass & they don’t work on me. It works on my friend who has narrow hips but a broad flat upper body.

Almahart · 26/01/2020 08:15

The Toast clothes that I do have very often are the things I wear most and that get the most compliments. They are really well cut

OneOfTheGrundys · 26/01/2020 08:16

I have a LOT from there, mainly sale. I’m still wearing, regularly, items from 6 or 7 years ago.
Some of it is a bit aggressively ‘workwear/functional’ for me. There was a dress this season that I think even the most model-figured would have looked like a Victorian asylum orderly wearing.
Still love the shop though.

Almahart · 26/01/2020 08:17

I have never bought anything from Toast full price but their sales are pretty good

Binterested · 26/01/2020 08:24

Toast is great if you want to look like a pottery teacher.

Hate that Telegraph column - dreadful narcissistic man ripping up his family’s history for the sake of - well better not say in case this thread is being watched. He still is a man by the way MNHQ - says he is himself. He hasn’t yet tripped that mystical switch that will make him a woman (where is that switch? I might switch mine off on the days when menopause gets too much)

LesLavandes · 26/01/2020 08:26

Toast used to sell very stylish clothes and I bought loads.

Now it is very drab. I stopped looking at their website

Flagg · 26/01/2020 08:27

I'd say my wardrobe is 75% Toast. You can get some stunning bargains in their sales, or at the Kilver Court outlet in Somerset.

It's all about the fabrics, and the classic cuts and detailing. I've just bought a pair of wide-legged cotton/wool blend trousers for work and they're just so comfy and slouchy and perfect. But as per PP I think you do have to have a particular style/ body type to pull it off. Like the opposite of Ted Baker.

nibdedibble · 26/01/2020 08:28

‘Fat Face for architects’ 🤣🤣🤣
I have some older trousers and older basic tops but really everything is too short for me now. Couldn’t buy a shirt there, for example.

Peapod29 · 26/01/2020 08:31

The cut and fabric quality are the best. They are clothes to last but certainly a certain ‘look’. I have a few bits from when I worked somewhere there was an outlet and we used to get brilliant bargains but I do think it’s very expensive. I think they styles have Been a little off in the last few years though as I’ve not been tempted by anything, its gone a bit too frump IMO.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 26/01/2020 08:35

I absolutely love it

CatalogueUniverse · 26/01/2020 08:37

Does anyone know if the sizing thing is accurate for Toast? I’ve stuck my height weight in it and it’s coming up with a number 2 sizes below my typical size.
