Shampoo for fine flat and greasy hair?

Crabonastick · 22/01/2020 15:13

Hey

I’m at my wits end with my hair. It’s fine, flat, and gets greasy so quickly. If I wash it in the morning, it looks greasy by the evening and that makes it look even more flat.

I’m going to cut it shorter as it is driving my mad, but wanted to at least try an anti greasy shampoo in the mean time

Can anyone make any recommendations?

There’s a Lush shampoo bar that I find works quite well, I can’t remember which one but I’ll see if I can find it on the website. The best suggestion I’ve ever had on here was to use dry shampoo on freshly washed hair rather than using it once your hair is already greasy. It really works for me, preventing the grease rather than trying to hide it once it’s there

Clarifying shampoo

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 22/01/2020 18:58

Shampoo and conditioner bars from &other have made a huge difference to my greasy hair. Lavender shampoo and deep conditioning bar. Game changers.

lazylinguist · 22/01/2020 19:00

Placemarking. Absolutely the same here. I've tried everything! Planning a shorter cut too, maybe with a few highlights.

Notonthestairs · 22/01/2020 20:13

I've got the same problem and only shorter hair and regular highlights has helped. (And I worry about the highlights as my hair is getting very patchy in places).

Popc0rn · 22/01/2020 20:49

Do you wash it every day? If so then you probably need to try and stretch it to every two days, washing it every day will make your scalp go into oil production overdrive. I used to have to wash mine every day and am now down to every three days Smile

Try using this build up shampoo from boots once a week AT THE MOST:

www.boots.com/boots-expert-build-up-removal-shampoo-200ml-10247057

And this sulphate free shampoo on other days:

www.boots.com/ogx-purifying-charcoal-detox-shampoo-385ml-10261103

Other tips I've found that help keep the grease at bay:

  • If you use dry shampoo, spray it on before you go to bed and don't rub it in, just leave it making your roots look grey Grin. By the time you wake up most of it will have been absorbed and you can rub any remaining stuff in.
  • Flip your pillowcases over in the morning and chuck them in the wash a couple of times a week.
  • Wash your hairbrush with that build up shampoo from boots a couple of times a week.
  • wear a hat Wink

@MrOnionsBumperRoller where are your shampoo bars from? Is &other right? I went searching but couldn’t find anything 🙈 thanks! 😊

yougotanology · 22/01/2020 23:03

Water softener installed and sukin oil balancing shampoo. I've tried more shampoos than you can store in an air hangar, will never change now.

Organic all the way for me, for every skincare item. Lasts ages and so much better for you.

yougotanology · 22/01/2020 23:04

Also dry shampoo - within a few hours of washing.

45Degrees · 22/01/2020 23:28

I'm probe to mid afternoon oily hair. The best thing I have found is to make sure I use a silicone free conditioner.
I can use any old shampoo as long as the conditioner is silicone free.
Since finding this out I can now go 2 days between washes. Might be worth a try.

Miljea · 22/01/2020 23:53

Am reading with interest!

SmileyClare · 23/01/2020 08:22

I've recently started using Elvive Clay shampoo. Really pleased with the results; roots don't look greasy and have a bit more oomph and the freshly washed look lasts all day.

I use a generous amount, massage really well into head and leave a minute before rinsing out with tepid water. Comb conditioner through ends only and follow with a cold water rinse if you can bear it.

Another vote for a little squirt of dry shampoo on roots immediately after washing and drying. This prevents oil transferring from scalp to hair. I saw this tip on here and it really works. Dry shampoo works better as a preventative method than to treat already greasy hair IYSWIM

I have the exact same type of hair. I have been using the boots build up removal cream mentioned above and it makes your hair feel so clean but I still have to wash my hair daily.

angstinabaggyjumper · 23/01/2020 08:26

Wild Sage & Co Rosemary shampoo bar, I bought this because I don't like buying products that contain palm oil however what a revelation on first wash my fine hair had body and looked like I'd used a mousse on it.

LunaTheCat · 23/01/2020 08:30

The Ketastase one for fine hair - has changed my life!

little0miss0mac · 23/01/2020 08:34

Find shampoo and conditioner without silicone in it. Harder than you'd think, but getting easier. Herbal essences do a couple; generally you need to check the ingredients list for items ending in '-one'. My fine hair is no longer lank since I clocked on to this.

SmileyClare · 23/01/2020 08:40

I'm also a firm believer in changing shampoo brands every few weeks. My hair seems to get used to one brand and doesn't feel so clean after the 20th wash with the same shampoo. Will be trying the Charcoal shampoo next recommended above.

My go to weekly clarifying shampoo is Vosene Original. Really cheap but leaves hair squeaky clean and removes build up.

Twirlywirlywurly · 23/01/2020 09:16

I find the Tressemme Clarifying shampoo good!

Crabonastick · 23/01/2020 10:25

Hey! Thanks so much for all the suggestions

I don’t wash my hair everyday as I’m too lazy for that so try to only wash it every 2-3 days (so you can imagine how vile it looks!)

Highlights make my hair look worse. I’m light/olive skinned with black hair so the highlights only seem to highlight the grease on my head.

I’m considering a shorter cut but was looking through my phone at when I had shorter hair and it still looks shit, greasy and flat. And I look about 10.

Do any of these shampoos make the hair ridiculously frizzy? I’m always worried about making the frizz worse (why can’t I just look effortlessly put together!?)

OP posts:
SmileyClare · 23/01/2020 11:06

The ones I use don't cause frizz. I think the trick is to shampoo the scalp really well only and then use a decent conditioner just on the ends.

Maybe get a bit cut off so it's easier to wash it more regularly? I don't buy into the idea that you need to wash your hair less if it's oily and it'll start to regulate itself.
I've asked a few hairdressers about washing my hair less and they've all shrugged and said If it's greasy, wash it!
I have quite long hair so some days I'll just wash it and comb it all back into a pony tail if time is short. I do think it's easier to have longer hair especially if it's prone to frizz. Short hair needs more styling IME.

januaryistoolong · 23/01/2020 12:27

Yes I know people always say cutting your hair is the quickest way to remedy flat and fine hair but I couldn’t disagree more. I keep it long as it least then it has a bit of swishy movement, when I have it short it just ends up lank and stuck to my head.

PrincessLouis · 23/01/2020 13:41

I have similar hair to this though not greasy for 18 hours whereas you sound more like nine.

I use Bed Head brand Fully Loaded shampoo & conditioner. The volume is amazing. Then dry shampoo (just Batiste original) on second day and it still looks good. Wash every other day & dry upside down.

This works!

Tfoot75 · 23/01/2020 15:07

Try a few different ones, as what I thought was a greasy patch was actually build up, and since swapping to silicone free it's completely fixed. Unfortunately I also have a very dry flaky scalp, and only know of one anti dandruff silicon free shampoo on the market.

The other thing that's a myth is conditioner, I stopped using it years ago and notice no difference whatsoever (and I'd never have believed that before trying it!!). We're just sold this stuff even though we don't need it basically!

Thedevilofsmallthings · 23/01/2020 16:15

Which Kerastase do you recommend Luna? I've seen it recommended a few times but they make so many .

bingowingsmcgee · 23/01/2020 18:13

If your hair isn't colored, try mixing bicarbonate of soda into your shampoo. It helps me get an extra day. I also rate the elvive clay shampoo. And wash the lengths and ends as well as the roots. Hardly any conditioner.
