Freezing feet at football

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has to stand on the sidelines watching our kids at weekends so was hoping you might have some tips about how to keep my feet warm. I’ve tried several pairs of thermal socks, bought more pairs of supposedly warm boots than I can remember and I am still getting chillblains. The rest of me is toasty warm - it is literally just my feet but it’s starting to make me dread watching the matches and training twice a week! Any advice gratefully received!

I've got a cousin who used to suffer badly from chilblains & she swears by going sockless in Winter and letting her feet self-regulate if you see what I mean. Bit drastic if you ask me.
I love cashmere socks. I size up so they're not restrictive and you can always get a cotton pair underneath. Same with boots, size up if you intend to wear thicker socks or more than one pair. Also don't stand still, even if it's just a bit of foot-stamping or a few steps up and down the touch line.

I have aigle neoprene lined wellies. But neither stylish nor beautiful!

justilou1 · 21/01/2020 12:43

You can buy battery operated inner-soles and socks on Amazon. (I have Raynaud’s Syndrome.) I’m not going to recommend one over another as I live in Australia, but I suspect that two pairs of inner soles are a better idea for washability’s sake! (Can chuck thermal socks on over the top!) Rechargeable batteries bring the cost and thermal footprint (no pun intended) down

FadedRed · 21/01/2020 12:44

‘After ski’ type snow boots and loose socks, nothing too tight. Thermal insole to reflect heat. And these ‘footwarmers’ - available in supermarkets and chemists, not just on the net.

Thanks so much for the tips- really appreciate it. Going to investigate them all!

Can you go and sit in the car, or somewhere warm, at half-time?

Maybe take a flask of tea or coffee as well for generally feeling warm and cosy.

Are your shoes waterproof, OP? If your feet are getting wet, that will probably make them feel even colder.

starfleet · 21/01/2020 13:49

I spent 13 years of Saturday and Sunday mornings standing on the sidelines watching my DS play football.

Try sheepskin insoles

Primark do some thick wool mix socks that are pretty good

Self heating insoles - stick them in shoes/boots and they warm up as you move around.

My oldest pair of Uggs came out on drier days but still had to wear some wool socks with them to keep my feet warm

Princessmardybum · 21/01/2020 14:01

Thanks for the replies! I’ve tried sitting in the car for as long as possible but feel like the other parents think I’m not as committed as they are! I can’t understand how they cope in their dainty little shoes, looking all glamorous! My newest boots are supposedly waterproof but haven’t really been tested yet as the last few weeks have been dry. Am definitely going to try some of these heated insoles suggested. Fingers crossed they will be my saviour!

I wear 2 pairs of socks and lined boots.

Greyhound22 · 21/01/2020 14:05

Heat holder socks - use these at the stables and they do work - a bit too well if you're working but would be great for standing on the sidelines.

GVmama · 21/01/2020 16:39

I really like my arctic Muck Boots and I do get really cold feet. I haven’t tested them out pitch-side yet but they would be my best bet if I was going to.

Futureplanning · 21/01/2020 16:43

I wear silk socks from the ski bit of decathlon, much warmer than the thick thermal ones I've previously tried. Then proper boots with a thick sole and sheepskin insoles.

I often look at other parents and wonder how they're coping in their trainers and bare ankles!

BubblesBuddy · 21/01/2020 16:43

Sheepskin lined boots of any kind! Big enough to take thick tights and wool socks.

ClaudiaWankleman · 21/01/2020 16:45

Agree with PP who said that you need to get walking a bit to ensure proper circulation. Plus, stalking up and down the touchline will definitely make you look committed!

Xiaoxiong · 21/01/2020 16:45

Ugh I feel your pain - DS2 has just joined U6 rugby and I thought my feet were going to drop off after an hour on the sidelines on Sunday. I was wearing bamboo socks and wellies - clearly not enough to keep properly warm!!

FlashingFedora · 21/01/2020 16:51

Wool socks and dunlops fleece lined wellies. Am in Scotland and that combo always keeps my feet warm.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 21/01/2020 16:51

i wear winter boots like Sorel or London Fog and normal socks. I live in Canada it was -30 last week

ChateauMyself · 21/01/2020 16:57

Thick soles - not wellies. You want to keep your feet off the ground. Walking boots or something with a thick sole.

Princessmardybum · 21/01/2020 17:38

You’re all brilliant! Thanks for some great suggestions. Hopefully my chilblain days are behind me!!

OP posts:
SpeckledyHen · 21/01/2020 18:16

Fly London wedge boots sorted it for me . The cold didn’t permeate through the soles .

Branleuse · 21/01/2020 18:24

I have some regatta thermo-guard walking boots that are brilliant in the winter. I get really cold feet in the winter and always used to get chilblains but these have been a godsend. Ive had them about 5 years now and theyre still fine.

goose1964 · 21/01/2020 19:58

Thicker soles keep your feet warmer, DD has very cold feet and I bought her some hiking thermal socks which she says are a lot warmer than the fashion ones.

MarshaBradyo · 21/01/2020 19:59

I find Sorels good, shearling-lined.

MissSmiley · 21/01/2020 20:02

Apparently standing on a carpet tile really helps

DartmoorChef · 21/01/2020 20:03

Decent walking boots, and go to an Angling shop and get some fishermen's thick socks and neoprene liners. Your feet will never be cold again.
