Freezing feet at football

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has to stand on the sidelines watching our kids at weekends so was hoping you might have some tips about how to keep my feet warm. I’ve tried several pairs of thermal socks, bought more pairs of supposedly warm boots than I can remember and I am still getting chillblains. The rest of me is toasty warm - it is literally just my feet but it’s starting to make me dread watching the matches and training twice a week! Any advice gratefully received!

Shearling lined boots, wool socks.

The heat holders are very thick but super cosy - you will need to size up any boots to wear them.

You can buy shearling insoles off Amazon and Ebay to wear in normal shoes/boots but you may need to size up as they are thick.

2 pairs of socks is key. First a thin cotton pair, then a thick wool pair. I agree with thick soles and walking up and down the touchline too. And a flask of coffee is a must.

In my experience, if you can keep your whole body warm, your feet will follow.
Long vest tucked in.
Knee length socks.
Boots with chunky soles
Extra pair of wool socks in extreme conditions.

I go fishing overnight a lot, even in winter. So keeping warm is vital, and muddy, icy lake banks require good waterproof warm clothes. I always have thermals on, footwear as I said above, and very importantly, a woolly hat. Neoprene is fantastic though as it keeps your body warmth in.

I have some 100% wool socks that I bought in Reykjavik. Our NL guide recommended them when on our tour there were people in wellies with frozen feet. He asked how many pairs of socks they had on. Three was one reply. He said that that can make it worse as cold air gets trapped.

I wear my wool socks and my Dublin boots on the sidelines of rugby. Last week I wore my ski socks instead thinking that they'd have the same effect. My feet were frozen! Definitely no wellies. You need something insulated.

Generally you will stay warmer with natural not synthetic fibres. It's a rule of thumb I go by.

Mohair socks, thick ones, from Corrymoor are the dogs' cojones. Inside waterproof boots. And a warm woolly hat, and gloves. Windproof any other parts of your body.

I have spent most nights & weekends standing at the side of football pitches all over Scotland for the last 10 years and as much as I hate to admit it Uggs are the only things that keep my feet warm on the icy cold days!

Branleuse · 21/01/2020 21:15

Uggs are not waterproof though. They wick

Thermal insoles and stand on a flattened cardboard box

halfthesun · 22/01/2020 06:45

Rugby mum here for many years and I feel
Your pain .. stand on cardboard - it works 😊

VenusClapTrap · 22/01/2020 08:11

Reynauds and chilblain sufferer here, until I discovered clog boots. The thick wooden sole raises you up off the ground, and the extra space around your toes allows the air to warm up. Add sheepskin insoles for extra toast ones.

Try Lotta from Stockholm or Sanita for clog boots.

VenusClapTrap · 22/01/2020 08:12

Toast ones = toastiness

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 22/01/2020 08:17

Stand on cardboard- an old market trader's trick

NightsOfCabiria · 22/01/2020 09:00

You need snow boots. Even a cheap pair will do.

Loop3x5 · 22/01/2020 09:51

Some fab advice here, def do the stand on carpet/cardboard. I've got Reynolds and get chilblains if I so much as stick my foot out of the duvet overnight. The only thing that has made my condition significantly better is running. So if all else fails try that 😁

TooGood2BeTrue · 22/01/2020 10:03

My son has recently started football training and I go for a run during his practice to get some exercise done and also for keeping warm... Is that weird / selfish / irresponsible, do you think? The coaches and my son are fine with it.

Anjelika · 22/01/2020 13:36

Heat holder socks as recommended by PP and snow boots. Got mine from Trespass - STAVRA II. Last year I could not stand out and watch as my feet were so cold but now I can!

DianaT1969 · 22/01/2020 15:07

Haven't read the whole thread, but was taught never to wear 2 pairs of socks while skiing, because heat evaporation causes warm air to be trapped, forming a thin layer of ice between the 2 layers of socks. One good pair, thermal insoles and sheepskin lining on waterproof boots might be your best option.

slinkysaluki · 23/01/2020 07:49

Sealskinz socks
