Wedding Dress

I am getting married abroad on the beach in Sri Lanka, April 2021 (I know I still have some time but would like to be organised and give myself a good amount of time to look around)!

I have started to look at dresses and I have found two different ones which I really like and I will be making the trip down to London to try them both on (I will link them at the bottom).

I just wanted some input from others to different brands/shops to look for or even dresses!

I am looking for a very simple dress, something timeless and beautiful. (I have been married before, so I have had the huge expensive dress) I would like to keep the budget to around £1000 and I am happy for it to be white, ivory, pale pink, champagne or something light. I am a size 6 and around 5'3, I really like the idea of spaghetti or thin straps but I am defiantly open to ideas! It will also be very hot at that time of the year! Thank you :) x

I think both may drown you a little. Could they be taken up at all?

BigusBumus · 20/01/2020 17:07

I kind of like the first one, but it is rather plain. The second one looks like a bit like a nightie.

I get the style you're after, but neither say Bride to me.

AlwaysTryingToHelp · 21/01/2020 15:45

Whatever dress I end up getting I will defiantly have it tailored to fit me perfectly!

I really didn't want something that screamed 'Wedding Dress', just something that was a beautiful dress in its own right

I prefer the 2nd to the first dress, but agree with pp^ that it's a little nightie-ish!

What about something like this?

Ginbauble · 21/01/2020 16:07

I thought the same as @BigusBumus.

Neither seems particularly 'special ' or stunning for a wedding (or for a £1k budget!)

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 21/01/2020 16:08

Aah, you didn't want anything that screams "wedding dress", I didn't see your update before looking! Grin

Ginbauble · 21/01/2020 16:13

Have you looked at Ghost, they have some simple and minimalist dresses that aren't very 'bridal'?

CmdrCressidaDuck · 21/01/2020 16:14

I think the second one is beautiful, but I also think it would be very hard to pull off unless you have a willowy build.

Have you tried on any dresses of this style? I think you really need to get to a wedding dress shop and try out a variety of styles and shapes to see what works. You can scope out the type of minimalist/sliplike designer you like and make some appointments in advance. Some styles of dress really only work on particular builds/bodies.

AlwaysTryingToHelp · 21/01/2020 16:42

I really didn't want anything with a train, they just get in the way and become dirty very quickly (I really ended up hating it by the end of the night the last time around), I think this is one of the things that is putting me off going into a bridal store as most of their dresses will have trains.

I have tried on a few different 'slip dresses' before and I do have a couple in a similar style for summer and holidays which are either short or midi length but I think you are right, I need to go into a few different stores, including bridal, and just try different styles on!

Thank you I will have a look in ghost now!

And one more! I think this would be lovely for a beach wedding.

This would be lovely for a destination wedding:

JMAngel1 · 21/01/2020 19:27

Oooh that two piece is stunning.

HermioneWeasley · 21/01/2020 19:41

The 2 piece from @WhatchaMaCalllit is lovely. Of the 2 you’ve posted, definitely the first

goose1964 · 21/01/2020 19:54

Can I just remind you that jjs house is a Chinese site, whether you get the dress that is in the (usually stolen) photo or something that hardly resembles it depends on the seamstress. A friend of DD got her bridesmaids dresses from there and despite paying extra for custom made had to have them all altered once they arrived.

Marmitepasta · 21/01/2020 20:10

I think both the dresses you have chosen are beautiful. Understated but very classy and simple.
Were I to get married and had I the figure, I would go for something like that!

TheJaneAustenBookClub · 21/01/2020 20:11

I think something like Jennifer Aniston wore (at the saga awards?) recently. The Ivory Dior one.

Ihavenoidewhatsgoingon · 21/01/2020 20:19

How about a gown from needle & thread or self portrait?

Ginbauble · 21/01/2020 20:27

Ooh some lovely dresses on the Needle and Thread website! And there's a sale on!

Love this one www.needleandthread.com/collections/bridal/products/leilah-dotted-bridal-gown-ballet-slipper

I absolutely love the first dress you posted OP. Beautiful

Mumma1984 · 22/01/2020 09:23

The white one for some lovely dresses - I got mine from here and am getting married abroad also, this one is nice and fairly simple

I used to work in the industry I’ve helped a lot of brides find their perfect dress.

Firstly as you’re on the petite side I agree you need to avoid anything that might overwhelm you.

But that doesn’t mean you have to avoid bridal wear boutiques - how long ago did you last look at wedding dresses?

There are many simple lines style dresses and the vast majority of trains can be removed - it’s usually very simple to do so.

There’s loads you can look at online but I’m quite wary of advising anyone to buy from anywhere not well known with a good reputation - I’ve had to “rescue” many a bride from such purchases.

Ditto with using non bridal seamstresses. Several brides I dealt with had bought from bridal boutiques, balked at the price of the in house seamstresses quote and gone to a high street seamstresses unused to dealing with delicate fabrics and large swathes of fabric and ended up with a wrecked dress. In one case you couldn’t even call it a dress anymore as the seamstress had somehow thought it a good idea to unpick ALL the seams so it was basically a bag of very expensive rags!

For an overseas beach wedding you want something lightweight, easy to pack, fabric that doesn’t crease easily, not too many layers (you’ll melt! Even if they’re in the lightest of fabrics because it’s the trapping of warm air thats the issue), when you’re having the hem altered consider whether you’ll really be wearing heels on a beach? You may want it hemmed slightly shorter than usual.

Get a decent waterproof garment bag for it.

Congratulations on your impending nuptials and good luck finding your dress.
