Sore crack at corner of mouth

Stumpedasatree · 16/01/2020 22:25

I've had a very sore corner of mouth for a few days now, and now have a crack at the corner of my lips. It's not a Cold sore as I have never had one before and is painful when I open my mouth or smile. I've been putting lots of moisturiser on. What is it?! What can I do?

I get this regularly, as well as a crack at the top of one nostril. I put a layer of Sudocreme on and work it into the cracks last thing at night. I find it seals them up after a few days of doing that.

Sounds like angular cheilitis op

Praminthehall · 16/01/2020 22:34

Agree with Taibhse. Get a tube of Daktarin Oral Gel over the counter and apply regularly.

han01uk · 16/01/2020 22:34

Try an antifungal cream

Is it like this perchance?

Rosere · 16/01/2020 22:35

@Taibhse beat me to it!

Karwomannghia · 16/01/2020 22:36

Yes dd has this and we went to the chemist and she advised that cream which cleared it up quickly.

Hoolihan · 16/01/2020 22:36

This is often caused by an iron deficiency. Try Floridax.

Duvetdweller · 16/01/2020 22:39

I get this - someone recommended a lip balm in here that has hydrocortisone in it, it’s called Dans or something, I got it on eBay. Completely cleared it up. I’ve just looked - it’s called Dr Dans cortibalm. It’s amazing stuff

MagratsDanglyCharms · 16/01/2020 22:40

I had this when i was youmger. It turned out to be B12 deficiency caused by bulimia and food sensitivities. If it doesn't clear up, ensure you have blood tests to check for any vitamin / mineral deficiencies.

Coatzillaclaus · 16/01/2020 22:53

Wash the area thoroughly with soap, dry and cover with a layer of Vaseline - hey presto! It’ll be much better in the morning :-)

DailyFailstinks · 16/01/2020 22:58

I second it being Vitamin B12 deficiency. I had this a while ago - cleared up once I took some vitamin B tablets.

Rafflesway · 16/01/2020 23:05

It could also be the start of oral thrush. 😰

I had oral thrush which started with both mouth corners cracking. I looked like the Joker! 😂
(It then moved to inside my mouth😩)

Originally treated it with Daktarin but eventually had to be prescribed Nystatin which finally cleared it up completely.

PJ04JCW · 16/01/2020 23:12

I get this if I'm short of vitamin C. I use the raspberry effervescent tablets from Aldi.

Rachelfromfriends1 · 16/01/2020 23:16

Early stage angular cheilitis! Buy daktarin oral gel ASAP! It will quickly clear it up, I tried sooo many products which were useless when I first had this!

It’s so weird, I had this first last July and it’s come back every two months since. Very annoying. I am not deficient in anything, my ferritin in particular is very high - when I did have low ferritin years ago, I never had AC!

I think mine is caused by oral candida - I had low level oral thrush as a side effect after a course of antibiotics and my mouth has never really returned back to normal. Luckily my GP is investigating.

Saladd0dger · 16/01/2020 23:17

I had this for weeks last year. I used canesten cream on it.

iswhois · 16/01/2020 23:19

This happens to me quite often. Smothering in sudocrem before I go to bed seems to help

BanditoShipman · 16/01/2020 23:23

Angular cheilitis, I tried everything! I found retinol creams brought it on. Canestan can work, but I found Vaseline worked best, put on at night

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 16/01/2020 23:27

I get this whenever I'm run down, normally with a cold sore too, ever since I was a child. I always just assumed it was caused by chapped lips, I didn't know you could get a special cream for it so thanks for the thread OP.

riverside277 · 17/01/2020 00:42

Yes it does sound like angular chellitis as PP said. I've suffered with it on and off and tried countless creams but the only thing that works for me is hydrocortisone cream although probably not recommended.

percheron67 · 17/01/2020 01:24

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream. Amazing stuff. I can even use it on my daughter's eczema . Expensive but it goes a long way and has so many uses.

Everley · 17/01/2020 02:51

I have a B12 deficiency and now I’m on proper treatment I don’t get this half as much as I used to. The best thing I ever found was Zam Buk balm. I think they still sell it but I’m not sure if it’s the same as it was 20 years ago. Lysine from Holland & Barrett is also really helpful for me.

CatOnABeanbag · 17/01/2020 09:16

Zam buk! Now that is a blast from.the past Grin

OP I find Vaseline best for this.

SoupDragon · 17/01/2020 09:18

Aldi's "miracle balm" which is, I think, their version of the Elisabeth Arden cream.

Itsjustmee · 17/01/2020 10:23

I’ve had that I used Thrush cream from boots 😂 after reading up on the internet about it

Worked a treat literally gone within a day of applying it
I often get it if I drink to much orange juice or grapefruit juice which is weird
I couldn’t even see mine but it was like a tiny little split in the corner of my lip
