I hate my hair at present!
Bit of a Backstory , it’s been being cut somewhere for years and years.Coloured twice a year with me doing box colours in between.
In November it needed cutting and was cut.it also needed colouring so I decided to do a box colour with the colour number recommended.
The cut I wasn’t happy with so they came back done a bit more few weeks later .Then I put colour on ready for December.Ive spent all of December with the most awful colour and cut I’ve ever had and really unhappy with hair.New year, I’ve decided I’m done with old cheaper hairdresser.
Went for consultation today and it’s going to cost around £123-140 for full head tint( lots of them) and cut.To get it back to how it was a few years ago.I think this is a lot and don’t want my desperation to cloud my judgement .
Most places In my area would probably charge this( just outside London)
So.... would you pay, do you pay this price and how often?
The stylist said that once we re back to the colour I want after this, it would never be as expensive again it’s just a lot of colour/tints are going to be used for my original blonde colour to be returned.

Well I wouldn't pay that but i dont live in London. I pay around £60 for highlights and a cut

Thecrown3 · 04/01/2020 09:44

Thank you @Dementedpixie.
How often do you have this done? I thought £70-90 was reasonable to pay.

My opinion is that hair is very important. Maybe more than clothes or make up.

I pay £75-ish for highlights ( 20 foils) and £68 for a cut, so that about £140-ish . I have the colour and cut 3 x a year , and cuts only an extra 2 x a year.

I am possibly in the same location- commuter belt.

It's not the cheapest salon but I have tried others and not been happy.

EggysMom · 04/01/2020 09:45

£45 for a cut and full colour (one colour) at my local suburban hairdresser; £37 if it's only the roots need colour.

Alarae · 04/01/2020 09:47

I used to pay around £120 for wash, cut and colour (balayage) and that was on a day you got colour services half price.

It was amazing though and the colour looks fab for ages.

Fruityb · 04/01/2020 09:47

I paid £100 for cut and colour - about 100 foils it felt like - and I was mortified it was that much. I pay £40 to my usual mobile one and she does a good enough job for me! Granted the expensive one was good but I was also in there five hours and bored rigid so swings and roundabouts I suppose!

MustardScreams · 04/01/2020 09:48

If you want a life changing cut and colour and don’t mind paying, Mark Anderson Hair is the absolute best. Based in Dulwich.

He cuts hair so well you only need a trim every 6 months or so, so it doesn’t work out that much more expensive. If you read his reviews you’ll see why people worship him!

AllMrsBrownsGirls · 04/01/2020 09:55

I don't really see your dliemma OP!

Prices depend on location- I'm 30 miles from London and salons have to cover their rents and overheads.

If you hate your hair now and want it to be nice, you have 2 choices- pay or find a cheaper salon (which is false economy if you go by your previous experiences.)

My Mum pays a tenner for a woman to come to her house.

I pay the best part of £70 with a senior stylist . I've gone to less expensive places and hated them. In my town I could spend somewhere from £45- 70 for a cut. It's not worth saving a few quid for a dodgy haircut IMO.

For me it's not about cost, it's about getting someone to cut it as I want it.

If you have been using box dyes and want to go lighter again you will probably be having your hair stripped, then coloured then probably a toner on. The problem with going lighter is you need to remove colour first, and if you have been doing box dyes you will have layers of colour overlapping so to get a good finish it takes time and skill.

However once its done it shouldn't be too difficult to maintain, unless your natural colour is very dark. I have my roots done and foils about every 8 to 10 weeks and it's £81 including the cut and blow and my hairdresser is amazing and very experienced but I am oop north.

If you want it doing and can afford it do it. But stay away from box dyes if you want to maintain it, unless you have someone who can help apply it. My roots are coming through atm and I won't be able to get for another couple of weeks but would much rather have roots than bugger up 3 years of carefully applied foils and low lights.

MassDebate · 04/01/2020 11:44

I pay over £150 for cut and half head (Hertfordshire) in a very good salon so your quote doesn’t sound unreasonable if they do a good job.

moleeye · 04/01/2020 14:11

I pay £120 for colour alone (full head) which I get done every 4 months

I'm in zone 6

What you've been quoted seems reasonable to me

Thecrown3 · 04/01/2020 16:13

That’s great - thanks everyone , seems a mixed bag based on location!! I’m Herts too.

My dp said you would pay it for the house or kids or pets if they were in a state or needed a bad job repaired lol lol but I get where he’s coming from.

I'm in Hampshire and pay £120 for cut and full head of highlights. I really think it is worth it, if you are unhappy with your hair now getting it sorted professionally will make a massive difference.

TurkeyStuffingPudding · 04/01/2020 16:29

I'm in Scotland and my highlights, toner and cut comes to around £120

BlackCatSleeping · 04/01/2020 16:36

I pay 80 pounds for a cut and color once a month. It's a lot of money but after years of neglecting myself and putting my needs last, I've started treating myself now I can afford it.

I think you should pay it and hopefully you will end up with a cut and color you love.

pontiouspilates · 04/01/2020 16:49

£140 sounds about right. I'm London outskirts and this is pretty much a standard price.

SpeedofaSloth · 04/01/2020 16:52

I live in the sticks and I paid £98 for a cut and whole head of 2 colours today.

SpeedofaSloth · 04/01/2020 16:52

And that's once every 8 weeks.

Rachelfromfriends1 · 04/01/2020 16:58

I think the prices you were quoted are standard too. I pay £120 for a full head of highlights (most senior colourist) and £60 on top for a cut and blowdry (most senior stylist) or £40 for a cut and blowdry (regular stylist)

So all things considered I think you’ve been given a decent price! Bare in mind that it seems you need a colour correction due to past colouring & box dye, meaning that your stylist has a difficult/complicated job. I’m assuming it’s uneven, you might have banding etc and as you want to go blonde it means that there’s lots of extra work involved.

Rachelfromfriends1 · 04/01/2020 17:01

I get a full head of highlights twice a year.

Every 2 months I get my brunette regrowth blended into my blonde lengths (with a tint) and a toner. My hair is damaged so doesn’t hold the blonde colour very well before going brassy, but others might be able to wait longer before a toner refresh

applepineapple · 04/01/2020 17:03

I pay £170 for full head colour (balayage with face framing highlights), cut and blow dry. I only go twice a year! This is my treat to myself and more than happy to pay this for a fantastic salon and stylist Blush

woodhill · 04/01/2020 17:07

£123 seems a lot.

I'm not far from you OP.

Probably £75

BananaBooBoo · 04/01/2020 17:07

Try Groupon. I've had my hair highlighted with a cut and blow dry in lovely salons for under £50.

daisyjgrey · 04/01/2020 17:33

If you've been using box dye it will be a longer job fixing that.

I pay around £120 twice a year for a full head of bleach foils/balayage and colour inc cut and finish. Then maybe twice between those appointments I pay around £4--60 for roots, olaplaex, cut and finish to maintain.
Having rubbish hair makes me feel crap and dowdy so if I can, I will maintain it. If money was stretched I'd reign it in and go for less complex colour that was closer to my natural to extend ties between root touch ups but I'd do everything I could to avoid box dyes, they're evil in a bottle.

Thecrown3 · 04/01/2020 18:45

I’ve had it coloured by hairdresser in between box dyes so not all bad, I’ve just done a maintenance top up in between but I think I went wrong this time as used totally different brand to what I normally do !!
Sounds like the consensus is pay it.
Hopefully will be cheaper next time around ! Thanks everyone
