I’m not buying any beauty products for myself this year

Unless it’s something I need or use regularly already and have run out of

But I worried I’d already broken it today as I bought a new eyelash curler BUT mine doesn’t work any more and I use it every day 😬

Also do swaps count?? (I’d be paying for postage)

I'm doing this too- replacement of used up essentials only.

I have bought some little stickers so i can mark things I've actually used to help me clear out as the year goes on to. I have at least 160 lipsticks/glosses, 25 eye palettes... no more!

MiniTheMinx · 03/01/2020 13:39

yep, I'm doing this too. I've wasted a small fortune in the last few years. So I've decided to stick to one brand for all my skin care and just place an order every few months to replace what I use.

I've binned almost all my make up. I've recently tried cheaper powders only to find I only like chanel.....so I've wasted money trying to find cheap alternatives. why? heaven knows, I only wear powder and full make up very rarely. The channel powder lasts at least 2 years.

I've tried almost every mascara on the market and still can't find what I'm looking for. I need something that isn't going to add volume.....but apparently everything does. So the money might be better spent on regular eyelash extensions.

As for eye shadows, lip sticks and blusher, I've found one colour that suits me, only one channel blusher that works, and one colour lipstick I like. Everything else has been an expensive disaster.

MrsAmaro · 03/01/2020 13:43

I really want to try this too. Over the Christmas break I divvied up all my samples and travel sizes into bags depending on product type. Between them and all the standard sizes I’ve bought I definitely don’t need a single thing. My make up could probably last the decade! I’ve promised myself I will use one of each type of make up product i.e one lipstick, one bottle of foundation until it’s empty and then move on instead of reaching for a different one each day. We will see Grin

StatisticallyChallenged · 03/01/2020 13:46

I do wear colour, i can be quite brave but i need to intentionally do it rather than grabbing the nearest shade of meh pink. I'm hoping this will force me to see what I'm not using and think about why.

None of my stash is cheap stuff either, i did a clear out a few months back. Everything left (shitloads) is high end which deserves to see the light of day.

BunnytheBlueWhale · 03/01/2020 13:59

@StatisticallyChallenged Do you mean you’ll mark the things you’ve used as opposed to completely new things? I just keep my unused stuff completely separate in a box and I will try to use what I’ve got although my stash of new stuff might come in handy if I feel the need for something new since I’ve banned myself from shopping!

@MiniTheMinx I think you’re right that it’s better to just splurge on one good quality foundation or powder and just use it until it runs out. I’m always wanting new things but what when I love some of the things I have?!

@MrsAmaro Good luck! I don’t mind using different things every day now that they’re already open but once I use this stuff up and buy more I will just be having one of things like foundation and concealer etc.

I actually think I get a lot of satisfaction from using things up which maybe could rival the high from shopping for stuff I don’t need... 😬

It’s partly because I want to be Abel to throw some bottles away to free up some space and make my bathroom easier to clean Grin

BunnytheBlueWhale · 03/01/2020 14:03

@MsAmaro Yes that’s a good point! And it is satisfying finishing something.

I started a blog two years ago and then stopped doing it but I might start it again and do monthly empties and mini reviews. It might motivate me. Or I can just keep you all updated Grin

OP posts:
StatisticallyChallenged · 03/01/2020 14:06

Mine is all out/in fancy makeup storage, I don't have a stash of unused stuff separately so I'm marking what I'm using so i can see what to throw away/ swap/ sell.

DickDewy · 03/01/2020 14:08

I have just thrown out 7 bottles (full) from the Ordinary. I have no idea what any of them were supposed to be for.

This year, I will be sticking to my Holy Grail of products I know and love.

WarmthAndDepth · 03/01/2020 14:14

Are you doing it for environmental reasons, financial reasons or because you are decluttering?
I have been buying second hand beauty items on eBay for years; much cheaper, you're not contributing to new manufacturing, and you have to be pretty sure you want something to wait for it to come up, so little chance of impulse buys.

BunnytheBlueWhale · 03/01/2020 14:22

That makes sense @StatisticallyChallenged

@DickDewy Did you not like them? I have heard good things but often it is all hype!

@WarmthandDepth Mainly money to be honest but also environmental. I don’t think I’d buy second hand make up BUT I think in future (assuming I manage to use up a fair amount of what I own this year) I will just buy what I need. I’ll buy the one foundation I know works for me, one powder, one set of shampoo and conditioner. It almost doesn’t matter what they cost etc then if I only have what I need as I won’t be generating so much waste. That’s the plan anyway!

OP posts:
BunnytheBlueWhale · 03/01/2020 14:22

Also I think when I do start buying again I’d like to buy only from cruelty free brands but I need to do more research on that

OP posts:
Greyhound22 · 03/01/2020 14:31

I'm doing the same.

Only thing I should need to replace is my tinted moisturiser and mascara. I have about 30 lipsticks and I need to use them.

Skincare I am currently using Liz Earle and a friend bought me a massive No 7 set for Christmas. I am buying no more.

I'm definitely not trying cheap alternatives so much as PP said. I've bought so many high street foundations that haven't worked I might as well have just stuck with my Dior.

HeyLala · 03/01/2020 14:33

I started this in January 2019 when I realised I had far too much beauty / facecare stuff. This does not include makeup, just cleanser, moisturisers, serums etc.

I took photos on my iPhone of each product, and the filed it in it's own folder. When I used something up, I put a big Red Cross over the photo.

I didn't buy any new products last year and used up about 50% of the products, so I still have enough to last me this year as well.

I'm completely embarrassed by this but am working through it. Using something up is a real joy!

I may do this with makeup now as you've inspired me to tackle another issue I have.

I have no idea how much money I've saved but must be in the hundreds

Patsypie · 03/01/2020 14:35

Me too! I've got a box full of new stuff from advent calendars and drunken shopping. I'm 'shopping' in that but only when things I'm using run out. It's a disgrace!

BunnytheBlueWhale · 03/01/2020 14:42

Completely agree @Greyhound22

@HeyLala Well done for doing it last year! I definitely cut down last year but didn’t stop buying. This year I need to stop! I’m so easily persuaded to buy by nice packaging or a good deal especially gift with purchase for some reason!

@Patsypie Yes, I have lots from advent calendars and beauty subscription boxes. I have a lot that will have just gone in the bin!

I’m also trying to take my own lunches to work instead of spending £5-10 daily so I should be saving a lot of money but we’ve not just move house so the likelihood is the money will still be spent!

On the plus I’m doing up a room as an office but will also be my sort of beauty room or dressing room so having a new set up might inspire me to use what I have.

StatisticallyChallenged · 03/01/2020 14:59

For me it's a mix - money saving and decluttering but also trying to make more of an effort to wear a bigger variety of my huge wardrobe and stash. I had a baby 15 months ago and until xmas she was still coming in to feed every lunch so i was in a major rut of wearing the same few dull feeding friendly outfits all the time. I'm trying to break down out of that but endless buying seems to make it worse.

HeyLala · 03/01/2020 16:26

I'm also trying the NO SPEND on clothes, shoes, bags etc as have more than enough.

This has been helped by a disappointing Autumn / Winter collection in most shops where I realised I already something similar back home.

Please let the Spring / Summer fashion be similar to what I already have Smile

I never thought I'd ever be like this. Not sure why or how it's happened but I'd rather go for a cycle ride and have tea and cake 🧁

However it could all change tomorrow if that perfect dress appears, but I'm trying to be strong.

CrowleysBentley · 03/01/2020 17:18

I've culled my makeup, hair products, skincare etc. I have a good skincare routine that works for me and I will replace things as they run out but I'm sticking to just those products. Same with hair, body, makeup etc.

I do need to buy some new clothes, as I have lost a fair bit of weight recently, but I'll be trying to stick to just basics and essentials. I don't want to spend loads, as I hope to continue losing weight. I'll have a splurge when/if I get to a weight that I feel happy with.

BunnytheBlueWhale · 03/01/2020 17:59

@HeyLala @CrowleysBently I am allowing myself to buy clothes because I have lost weight and am continuing to lose weight and also the dress code at work changed but I am trying to only buy quality things I need and will wear a lot.

OP posts:
StatisticallyChallenged · 03/01/2020 18:29

I'm doing the same thing with clothes too - replacement of basics only. If by some miracle i lose weight i should be able to alter most stuff, probably just buy jeans, leggings etc that don't adjust so well

Costacoffeeplease · 03/01/2020 18:41

I will be buying a minimum of stuff, I have lots in my stash to use up, and doubt I really need anything except shampoo/soap/shower gel

BunnytheBlueWhale · 03/01/2020 19:30

Costacoffee I actually think I have at least a year’s supply of soap and shower gel. I might need to buy shampoo and toothpaste and that’s it 😂 unless I can buy bath bombs when I run out? I have a few but not a year’s worth - didn’t think of that!

OP posts:
Costacoffeeplease · 03/01/2020 19:34

😄 that’s the few things I don’t hoard, shampoo and shower stuff, we just get those along with normal shopping!

XingMing · 03/01/2020 19:47

@MinitheMinx, the L'Oreal mascara in the tear drop shape bottle doesn't add volume, if it helps.
