I often look scruffy. What easy steps can I take to look neater?

I'm often at the school gate with unkempt hair, a down-filled walking jacket, old, bobbled top, jeans that don't fit, amusing socks from accessorize and scuffed shoes. I work from home most of the time. When I have to go to see clients, I wear dresses and try to look tidy (but still end up with ladders in my tights and looking a state) but when I'm running errands and on the school run, I feel really awkward and messy. It doesn't help that I'm about a stone heavier than I like, and my hair is greying because I can't dye it at the moment. What can I do to smarten myself up and feel less dowdy? I'm 5ft 6 and a size 12, pear shaped with a massive mummy tummy that makes me want to cry, so I have to try to hide it.

I'm severely allergic to hair dye I just get old free hair dye and I dont swell up.

Traditionalwife · 30/01/2020 12:14

Ppd free I mean damn autocorrect

Ellapaella · 30/01/2020 12:19

I tend to agree with @Elllllle. I think it's a good time for a wardrobe overhaul if you can afford it.

Ferrisbuellersdayoff · 30/01/2020 14:28

I see what you mean @Elllllle and @Ellapaella but I think with my body shape and age I'm far more comfortable with a more classic style. I just want to look nice, not trendy. I think I'll go to a personal shopper soon.

Agree with PP that Chelsea boots might be a good bet if you're looking for ankle boots. Classic so you can keep them in your wardrobe even when they're not in fashion, comfortable and practical, easy to wear as they have no heel.

Re top lengths, yes the ones tucked into the high-waisted trousers looked good on you. For longer length with the slim-fit jeans, try something more like crotch length rather than the in-between length of the top in the last jeans photo. I would go for figure-skimming rather than skintight, but definitely not baggy (as you illustrated in some of the earlier photos, baggy tops will hang straight down from your boobs and hide your waist). Or you could play around with half-tucking in baggier shirts and see whether you can get that to work (a little bit like this type of tuck [[https://www.mintvelvet.co.uk/product/Black-Foil-Lips-Print-Shirt/26584]]).

If you want to wear that last dress I'd try it with flat shoes and a chunky necklace ending just above the neckline as it's quite scoop necked. But if it doesn't make you feel good then just get rid of it.

Sorry, last link was supposed to go [[https://www.mintvelvet.co.uk/product/Black-Foil-Lips-Print-Shirt/26584]].

I give up!

Ferrisbuellersdayoff · 30/01/2020 15:36

I really like the look of these, but not sure if they'd make me look short.

Silver trainers are in, I think. Easier to keep clean than white. Get leather ones and wipe with a damp cloth. That will work for white too but it is hard to keep them pristine.

nevernotstruggling · 30/01/2020 16:48

@Ferrisbuellersdayoff I love those boots! Would look so good with black trousers or skinnies and very low maintenance

Ferrisbuellersdayoff · 30/01/2020 17:03

I don't own black trousers, just navy. I suppose they'd look weird with navy as there's a large black area on the boots?

A Bob is actually an incredibly unforgiving style in my opinion (but then I’m a naturally curly redhead which might influence me) but even on others unless it’s JUST been “done” it doesn’t look tidy or “together” and the length means you can’t tie it up.

My mother HATES That I’ve kept my hair long but I honestly don’t suit it short and brutally honestly in a longer length you can use quick and easy “updos” to make it look like you’ve made more effort than you have!

Butterfly/claw clips are a lifesaver for this. Pic attached is how I wear my hair ALL the time at the moment the only exception is I use a barrette to secure as I even sleep with it like that.

Dead easy to do just brush back into a pony tail, fully twist the pony tail lift and secure with clip.

Other styles I’ve used are Gibson tuck (looks impressive but dead quick and easy to do), French plait (can do the night before), french twist, chignon (using a hair loop - dead easy!)

But even with a bob you could using the top half/crown of hair do “updos” on a smaller scale with smaller accessories to tidy it up.

Even a half ponytail which you could even plait would be tidier.

“Can't do varnish for the time being” I have allergies/sensitive skin and this is occasionally true for me too. What you CAN do is keep them trimmed and filed and you can use a “buffer” which gives them a healthy shine without polish.

Wardrobe wise having core colours, a “palette” is a good idea.

As a redhead there’s a lot of colours/shades I simply can’t wear as they make me look bizarre! So I stick to “autumn” colours which I know suit me - deep reds, browns, dark greens, navy, I struggle in summer months as I don’t really suit pale colours though, so I end up wearing dark colours bottom half and white, cream and pale blue on top half.

I’m blethering on... point being now when I shop I stick to my core colours as I know they’ll “go” with what I already have.

A classic trench coat makes even jeans and jumper look smart I agree. I have one, but I also have a “puffa” jacket because quite honestly sometimes where I live (west coast of Scotland) you NEED a WARM and WATERPROOF coat with a hood and zipper!

Re shoes - you need at least 2 pairs on the go at once for foot health if nothing else. Also means they last longer. Sweat etc wears them out quickly they need a good airing.

I always have - a pair of trainers, a pair of pumps and a pair of good boots at any one time. I’m on a tight budget these are not expensive/high quality shoes usually “primark specials” but they last me because I’m not wearing the same ones all the time. I have flat sandals and flip flops in summer too. I can’t wear heels any more.

I only wear plain black ankle socks now, far easier than faffing trying to pair up and easily replaced and always look tidy. Opaque black or navy tights for when I wear a dress or skirt in colder months (which is pretty much all the time but for 2 weeks in August here!) again just primark ones but they wash well and rarely ladder and even if they do cheap enough not to worry about.

When I’m out and about/back when I was working I always carried in my bag:

Spare tights

Emery boards (saves the tights if you can file broken/chipped nails straight away)

Gum - for quick breath freshener

Spare cheap stud earrings

“Spare” basic make up that stayed in my bag in a SMALL makeup bag - tinted moisturiser, small concealer wand, powder compact, neutral colour eye/cheek/lip makeup, mascara, sample size of fave perfume (go to make up counters as if you’re a new customer 😉)

Small travel pack of wet wipes (or just a few wipes from bigger pack at home in a “sandwich bag”)

“I drink way too much full fat coke.” Actually awful stuff! Incredibly harmful to the stomach - it’s basically acid! Leeches calcium from your bones, dries you out and the caffeine? Wow! Don’t quit cold turkey! Caffeine is VERY addictive both physically and psychologically, wean yourself off. But do try to get off the stuff.

I’m also very pale and fake tan doesn’t work on me - makes me look jaundiced! So you’re not alone there!

Like me you can’t do crew necks due to large boobs - they make me look either matronly or manly!

Disclaimer to ALL the above I have NO idea what’s in fashion, I decided ages ago I’d stop worrying about that and wear the colours and styles that suit ME.

Style and fashion are 2 different things.

Sometimes something is in fashion which also suits my style and I’m able to stock up, but otherwise I stick to what suits me.

Apileofballyhoo · 30/01/2020 18:00

They'd look fine with navy. You should also invest in a more classic colour I think. And something that's as comfortable as possible.

Part of looking good is feeling comfortable.

nevernotstruggling · 30/01/2020 18:10

@Graphista you are so right about the black socks - no margin for error then is there

nevernotstruggling · 30/01/2020 18:16

www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0655784001.html

I've just got these. I'm amazed how flattering they are and I've had 2 c sections! They look much much smarter than skinnies which I am now phasing out for work

Graphista · 30/01/2020 18:25

@nevernotstruggling it just makes things so much easier. And when dd was still living at home and she prefers white socks or light coloured ones so meant we knew which were whose easier too!

I did something similar with pant colours! I have endo (Tmi warning) so prone to leaks and black/navy pants just makes life easier!

Dark colours generally look smarter, it's harder to see stains/bobbling on dark colours.

What's rarely seen on adult women now is old style layering which can be a way to use light colours without risking stains etc

Eg a lighter coloured shirt/blouse under a darker v neck sweater.

I also wear a vest top under a v neck for a splash of a different colour but I think these styles are considered old fashioned now?

mathanxiety · 31/01/2020 00:10

The blue top/black bottom dress is not tunicky enough. It's too t-shirty on top.

If you're looking for tops that fit better at the waist while still offering good boob area fit, try banded bottom tops. They will be a little blouson and can balance the hips, while not flapping at the waistline.

I think it's all about jumpsuits.

I tried on some boots in Jones earlier but I don't feel like I can carry them off (ignore the silly socks).

Wow! You look gorgeous in that jumpsuit!

In fact I probably don't belong on S&B, as I think you look great in everything you've posted with the possible exception of that grey stripey jumper at Wed 29-Jan-20 01:04:30 You have some great dresses. I think half the battle is just wearing them instead of getting into your comfy jeans everyday.

SandAndSea · 31/01/2020 23:47

OP, I can relate! (I got bleach on one of my favourite tops this week!) Anyway, said top is suddenly available again and super cheap so I've gone and bought several more. I don't buy many clothes but I do buy multiples when I find something which I love, which goes with everything and which doesn't need ironing.

Alongside this, I think it helps to make sure your drawers etc are ready to use, with clothes and accessories which fit, flatter and feel good. (IOW, declutter the dross.) I've found it helpful to look into 'capsule wardrobes' and shop for outfits rather than individual items. I can now pretty much grab any top and any bottoms, throw on a scarf and some earrings and I'm good to go. (Though I do need a good coat atm, but apart from that...)
