What style/beauty trends defined the decade?

I thought this might be a fun NYE thread, especially for those of us who have children and are therefore housebound!

For me:

Beauty - highlighting/contouring, huge dark eyebrows, eyelash extensions, and lip fillers. Basically the whole InstaFace thing.

Style - midi dresses with trainers, mom jeans, chunky trainers, and pretty much everything we wore in 1996!

Anything else?

It has to be leggings and skinny jeans.

Xiaoxiong · 31/12/2019 17:47

I feel like the body aesthetic changed a lot but is still equally unattainable. In 2000 it was all about flat stomach, flat bum and snake hips with seriously low riding jeans (think Kiera Knightley in that white top and bare midriff outfit). Now in 2020 it seems to be big muscular bums and thighs but still tiny waists and flat stomachs (kardashian influence probably). There used to be jokes about "does my bum look big in this" and now it's about highlighting your bum or actively trying to make it bigger in the gym.

Men's body image expectations have changed too - the expectation seems to be much more "cut" and muscular. I look back at 90s male movie stars and pop stars and they are so much more normal looking, more attainable.

QueenOfTheAndals · 31/12/2019 17:48

Didn't skinnies come in earlier though? I'm sure I bought my first pair in the noughties!

Trainers 100%. 10 years ago no one wore them. Converse yes but not trainers.

Basilicaofthemind · 31/12/2019 17:50

Also ankle boots

megletthesecond · 31/12/2019 17:50

Those daft eyebrows.
Contouring.
Designer trainers. (But you will never separate me from my trusty Nikes).

Shopgirl1 · 31/12/2019 17:51

I was definitely wearing skinny jeans in 2007, so they are around longer.

QueenOfTheAndals · 31/12/2019 17:51

@Xiaoxiong I think the Kardashians are responsible for a lot of aesthetic trends! And there seems to have been a shift from trendsetters being A-listers to being YouTubers or reality tv stars.

Big waves rather than poker straight hair
Big eyebrows
Fake tan
Bodycon dresses
Nicer clothes for plus size women
Shit loads of eye makeup
Fake lashes for everyday wear
Fake nails
Hair extensions
Wearing pyjamas and lounge wear outside
Were Ugg boots this decade?

QueenOfTheAndals · 31/12/2019 17:57

There's also been the rise of Scandi shops like Cos and Arket which have an aesthetic all of their own and, as I once read on here, aren't designed with the male gaze in mind. Yea, some of it can look less Scandi cool and more North Korean re-education camp, but it's certainly a change from the likes of BooHoo or Pretty Little Thing!

Skinny jeans - future generations will ridicule us for looking like Max Wall. I loved the shape at first, until they morphed into jeggings.

Drag make-up. Subtle it wasn't.

Bedroom wear as day wear, as people shuffled around the aisles in their dressing gowns and onesies.

Dressing in the workplace etc. became far more relaxed than any previous generations.

QueenOfTheAndals · 31/12/2019 18:13

Let's not forget the Rise of the Onesie! Though I'm not sure that qualifies as "style" exactly...

OP posts:
Owlish · 31/12/2019 18:20

Absurd highlighter, especially on the tip of the sodding nose. So many YouTubers do this, even ones not related to fashion or makeup, it's all I can focus on!

EnglishRain · 31/12/2019 18:41

Scandi style clothing towards the latter part I think.

Also, crop tops whatever they are called now. I am that old lady that wonders how they aren't all freezing wandering around with their belly out 🥶

keepingbees · 31/12/2019 18:46

Beauty - Eye brows! Thicker, drawn on, high definition brows.
Face contouring.
Lots of Insta friendly face powders that photograph and reflect light well. Matte lips moving away from lip glosses.
Multiple ear cartilage piercings.
Curls and waves rather than poker straight hair.
Balyage and similar rather than stripy highlights.

Fashion:
More 80s styles like mum jeans, bomber jackets, trainers.
Dresses with trainers/Dr Martins.
High waisted jeans rather than low cut.
Teddy coats.
Long sleeved (lots of floral) midi dresses.

QueenOfTheAndals · 31/12/2019 18:53

For men, the rise of the hipster full beard! And sleeve tattoos for both sexes becoming more mainstream.

OP posts:
Morgenrot · 31/12/2019 18:55

I think it's mainly the heavy make up - eyebrows, contour, highlighter.
Pretty much all the clothing has been around before. I wore skinny jeans as a teenage punk in the seventies Grin

queenofarles · 31/12/2019 20:01

For me I think the biggest trends are Normcore .

The Influence of Phoebe Philos Celine years.

Graphic tees with pleated midi skirts.

Sweatshirts with everything!

VeniceBeach · 31/12/2019 20:31

Any predictions for the 2020s as well? I work at a university and I’m seeing a lot of bootcut/flared jeans and trousers, often in corduroy or stretchy material. Lots of ankle length straight jeans but hardly any properly skinny jeans now!

ChakaDakotaRegina · 31/12/2019 20:38

Active wear! (Showing off my baby in my active wear, active wear)

Highlighter on the verge of drag face with body con / bandage dresses

Play suits
Ladylike Maxi dresses/midi skirts

Man buns or peaky blinders hair

QueenOfTheAndals · 31/12/2019 20:41

@VeniceBeach When the two Kates (Moss and Middleton) abandon their skinnies then we'll know they're well and truly over!

OP posts:
NannyPear · 31/12/2019 20:44

Venice oh I do hope you are right about bootcut and flares!! They are the most flattering on me

I'll add a short period of bardot dresses onto the list. Pain in the arse finding a bra for then. Worse yet, bardot bodycon dresses!

Joeler · 31/12/2019 20:46

Thonged bathing suits, neon, fish net socks, tutu's for festivals (instead of Hunter wellies and jeans when I went).

TipseyTorvey · 31/12/2019 20:51

Hair. Long fake hair everywhere. In every soap and movie the women have long luxurious expensive tresses down to the middle of their back. And as pp have said sharpie eyebrows. Cold shoulder thingies.

VeniceBeach · 31/12/2019 20:53

Nanny I never thought I’d go back to them but I just bought a pair of very dark grey cord flares and they look great! Although I’d forgotten that they drag on the ground if they’re not the perfect length...
