Just dyed my hair with a different dye to usual, and it's not covered the grey at all (Clairol Nice & Easy; I usually use John Frieda). I'm sick of dyeing it every four weeks but also really can't face just trying to grow it out for months and months and months.

Has anybody managed to go grey gracefully? Or find a way to look half decent without dyeing it every few weeks?

I don't mind going to see a hairdresser. In fact, I'm half tempted to go and ask somebody to just dye it all grey for me!

It looks lovely, Elephant.

Which anti-frizz products do people like?

I'll make an appointment with a proper hairdresser, I think, and see what he/she suggests.

How old are you ? My friend had just turned 40 and got about 30% grey but no way should she be embracing tyat, she’s still a young woman and very young in her behaviour it would be very very aging for her.

KTyoupigeon · 29/12/2019 20:07

I’ve gone cold turkey from dyeing ever 4 weeks. Naturally I am a very dark brown. I last used dye around May this year and after thinking I was probably almost all white/light grey a lot of the hair coming through looks dark silver.

NotMeNoNo · 29/12/2019 20:07

I grew mine out over the summer. I'm 50, it was about 30% white in a pixie cut. I wanted it to be "grombre" but I just looked tired. Dyed it back to cool brown this month to everyones relief. Maybe I'll try again in a few years if it gets to a more solid white. I don't think the streaky look suits me. But the only way to find out is to try!

letsdolunch321 · 29/12/2019 20:08

My hair was dyed dark from 17yrs old. I had highlights when I decided to grow out the dye, once the grey was 6cms long from the root I had a pixi cut. Now it is back to the bob length, took 2yrs to get where I am now

bobstersmum · 29/12/2019 20:09

Well my method at the moment is adding lighter bits here and there (in the problem grey areas mainly) to try and mask the grey. I cannot use full head dyes because my scalp is too sensitive. So on the whole now my hair is a lot lighter than it would be naturally but it has taken the obviousness away from my grey bits.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 29/12/2019 20:11

I do nothing. My hair is pretty much black but my 'wings' are silver and there's a smattering across the top too. Can't be bothered dyeing; never have, never will.

KTyoupigeon · 29/12/2019 20:12

All my fringe has been trimmed a lot so all new hair (my hair grows very quickly) I did cut my very long hair quite a bit shorter to above my shoulders before the summer and will keep it growing until the new grey hair reaches my shoulder and then I will cut it back to shoulder length so it’s all grey

Lunch - I love yours. It looks so much better natural than the highlights did. Lovely colour.

I'm almost 50 but quite 'young' in terms of clothes. I don't want to look old but I'm also sick of having red hair with grey and dark brown roots appearing within a week of it being dyed.

@birdandsparrow Snap (except I haven't gone blonde yet, still dithering).
41 yrs old and at least 50% grey. I dye my roots every 2-3 weeks as the silvery flashes just look so awful both in real life and photos. Unfortunately becoming allergic to dark hair dye though.
The things stopping me are 1) everyone telling me that I've ALWAYS been dark and it would just be weird if I wasn't 2) hair isn't in the best condition as I style it a lot, so worried about the bleaching process.
Can I ask if you did it all in one go?

letsdolunch321 · 29/12/2019 20:49

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie - Thank you.

The grey is more ageing unfortunately, I try to use a variety of colours (clothing) & makeup to compliment the grey. Sometimes it works. I love not having the hassles of dyeing it constantly.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2019 20:51

KT - yours all blends in really well.

I was 38 when I let my grey out. Grey is quite trendy currently so I decided to act quickly while it's on trend :D several times people have asked me where I have it dyed or what I ask for and are surprised when I say it's just natural grey! Personally I don't think that it's the case that grey hair has to be ageing, in fact it can be quite the opposite. Loving all the photos :)

Marmelised · 29/12/2019 21:04

Mine has been white for years. Once it was premature, now I’ve aged into it.
My hairstylist is adamant I need a sharp cut if I won’t colour. I was really touched when she went to her mentor‘s, from the 1960s Vidal Sassoon salon where she trained, 80th birthday party and took a photo of my haircut to show him!
I get stopped in the street on a regular basis with people saying they love my hair. I would never have had the discipline to dye it regularly and grey/white just works for me.

KTyoupigeon · 29/12/2019 21:10

I’m surprised how much has come through dark grey/dark silver because every four weeks I seemed to have a white badger stripe so I thought most of it would come through light - the picture is around 5-6 weeks after my last dye

Okay. This is mine currently. The hair dye hasn't covered the greys at all but has made my hair feel nice and look quite shiny.

@hollyberry2 yes, went and had the brown dye bleached out and blonde dye on top on the same day. Had purple highlights added a few months later and have had them again a few more times.

The bleaching wasn't too bad and now I use a drop of argan oil from Lidl on my hair when wet before I dry it and try to blow dry on a low heat and that's helped with the condition. I found the more grey I had the worse the texture was as the grey seemed drier and more wiry.

BirdandSparrow · 29/12/2019 21:34

I have fair skin/freckles and blue eyes but worried my complexion was too rosy for blonde hair but it's nice. It's quite an ash or platinum blonde.

Meercatsarecats · 29/12/2019 21:34

I went cold turkey nearly a year ago, I'm early 30s and my hair looks quite similar to yours op for the texture and the amount of grey.
There have been a couple of times at certain lengths I've nearly gone back to dye but it's nearly all grown out now.
Personally I think it looks nicer with the grey grown out than an inch of very obvious roots.
I got sick of the time and money I was spending, not to mention the mess and the smell for the results to last less and less. The last dye I put on really didn't suit me at all so that's when I gave up.
I don't think it ages me but I'm only 33 and people often say i look younger.

BirdandSparrow · 29/12/2019 21:43

This is my hair blonde but with grey roots showing at the top. They look like normal dark roots. You can also see the remains of my purple highlight on the right

Went cold turkey - as a dark brunette going blonde wasn't an option. The first few months are the worst - used those little green cans of spray cover ups. Instagram is great when I needed some motivation to keep going.

Really pleased with my grey as my hair condition is so much better now - and also have noticed how many women are doing similar.

Good luck!

Ludways · 29/12/2019 21:54

I 52, I spent a year going grey, looked like a ghost and it aged me terribly, dyed it again. I'll wait another maybe 5 years and try it again.

My friend did it, she looks fabulous.

Mamia15 · 29/12/2019 21:58

Oh and a tip - dark dye often fades to a horrible reddish brown which clashes with cool dark grey roots. I use blue toning shampoos to help tone down the red tones.

TheReef · 29/12/2019 22:26

Go lighter, and then it looks a bit like a balayage but in reverse. I went to a decent hairdresser and got them to put foils through, after it had grown out a bit they did it again but matched it with my natural hair colour. I also use a purple shampoo so the bleached ends aren't yellow and look more like my grey 'highlights' Smile

TheReef · 29/12/2019 22:32

As per my post above, I've got about 18 months without any further dying
