Sanitizing make up?

Has anyone “sanitizers” their make up?

I have read about people scraping off the top layer of a powder product and then spraying alcohol on it to kill any bacteria (thinking about products I’ve had for a few years)

I also have a small make up cleaning spray somewhere that I never really used but that claimed to clean makebup if you just sprayed it on top and let it dry

I don’t know if this is even necessary but it makes sense that bacteria will live on the products especially after years but I don’t want to ruin all my make up of course so just wondered if anyone had any experience of this.

Thanks!

God no. Just chuck it away, it’s not worth the risk.

I hate finding an old bit of makeup in a stores away handbag or case it makes me feel ill thinking of using it. No amount of alcohol spray or scaring could make me use it🙈

ReeRi · 28/12/2019 23:59

I think some I will throw away but I’m thinking more of the stuff that I don’t think needs throwing away. I have some bits that, admittedly, I’ve had for 2-3 years but they’re powder products I’ve barely used and always with a clean brush so I don’t really want to throw that away 🤔

Having said that I want to try to use up what I’ve got and then not buy as much because I don’t want to keep things for years and years 😬

@SexlessBoulderBelly If I found something in a handbag or whatever I would throw it away though as handbags are full of germs! 🤮

I suppose if you’ve always used a clean brush and it’s not an overly used powder then alcohol spray will probably do the trick.

You see people use rubbing alcohol to fix broken powders so I can’t see why spraying it on a powder and writing to dry would ruin it in anyway.

Besides, is attempting to sanitize it does ruin it then you wouldn’t want to use it in sanitizer so you havent got much to lose Grin

Un-sanitized*

ReeRi · 29/12/2019 11:04

Yes that’s what I was thinking. I might try it on one or two bits and see how it works

Presumably it's only you that has used the make up, I would just use it, what could you possible catch from it? I mean,if it's super old and manky then bin it but if it's only been used a couple of times it'll be fine.

ReeRi · 29/12/2019 11:11

I don’t think I will catch anything from it as only I have used it and I have sensitive skin anyway and haven’t broken out but just like the idea of it being completely clean 😬

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/12/2019 11:15

Nothing is completely clean, even when you buy new make up.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/12/2019 11:15

**don't overthink it

ReeRi · 29/12/2019 11:24

Yeah I get that @MrsPelligrino I just like things to be as sanitary as possible and thought some people on here might have done this but no such luck!

We basically live in a microbial medium - and we've evolved with microbes to mostly either live peaceably alongside them or even benefit from their presence. If you're not ill or reacting to the makeup you should keep it, not send it to landfill.

ReeRi · 29/12/2019 11:45

If you're not ill or reacting to the makeup you should keep it, not send it to landfill.

I’m talking about cleaning what I have. Not disposing of it.

nothingwittyhere · 29/12/2019 11:46

Sorry, that was to the person who suggested binning it Smile

ReeRi · 29/12/2019 11:59

Oh that makes sense.

Yes I don’t plan to throw anything away that I don’t need to and to be honest I need to buy a lot less in future

I might even stop myself from buying make up in 2020!

Something I should definitely consider too closes bathroom cabinet containing 20 or so lipsticks Wink

BunnytheBlueWhale · 29/12/2019 13:47

@nothingwittyhere Grin

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/12/2019 14:25

20? Pah. That's my overflow from my rotating lipstick stand Grin

Also planning a no beauty buys 2020. I am only going to allow replacement of basics (foundation etc) as I don't have a year's supply of those. But I have probably 20 odd eyeshadow palettes, i reckon over 100 lipsticks/glosses etc. It would be a good challenge.

BunnytheBlueWhale · 29/12/2019 14:37

Same @StatisticallyChallenged I have lots of eyeshadow palettes and blusher palettes and blushers / bronzers / powders. I have lots unopened which I will leave unopened but want to use up some of the stuff I have.

I have had some for a few years though and can’t help but feel it might be a bit manly just from being open all that time

I have a free day today so I’m going to try out the alchohol thing and also take photos I have for swaps for the swap thread!

Destinesia · 29/12/2019 14:54

I'd buff the top layer of powder off either using a clean brush or clean cuticle pusher and wipe around the case and lid using isopropyl alcohol on a microfibre cloth.

BunnytheBlueWhale · 29/12/2019 15:19

But not out alchohol on the actual powder @Destinesia (I have NC by the way but put on the OP)

Destinesia · 29/12/2019 17:41

@BunnytheBlueWhale I don't put it on the product itself, but you can. is quite old now but might be useful to watch?

BunnytheBlueWhale · 29/12/2019 18:03

@Destinesia Yes! Thank you that is really useful. I trust Wayne but haven’t seen any of his really old videos before.

Interesting thing was in the comments some people were saying 70% alchohol is better than 90% for disinfecting!

Might be ok for my own make up though which probably doesn’t have much in the way of bacteria on it (well not as much as a make up artist who is using the make up on different people) 🤔

BunnytheBlueWhale · 29/12/2019 18:37

So, because Wayne Goss said it was ok, I have sprayed every powder product I own with 99% isopropanol

These are just some of the items... 😬🙈
