Sanitizing make up?

Has anyone “sanitizers” their make up?

I have read about people scraping off the top layer of a powder product and then spraying alcohol on it to kill any bacteria (thinking about products I’ve had for a few years)

I also have a small make up cleaning spray somewhere that I never really used but that claimed to clean makebup if you just sprayed it on top and let it dry

I don’t know if this is even necessary but it makes sense that bacteria will live on the products especially after years but I don’t want to ruin all my make up of course so just wondered if anyone had any experience of this.

Thanks!

Sanitizing make up?

All make up products have a little picture of a jar on the back that tells you how long you should keep it from opening it usually (3m 6m 12m 18 months ) I have loads of make up and once every 2 or 3 months I go through everything and check what's going out of date soon . As long as a clean make up brush is being used and your making sure kids are on correctly and tight it shouldn't really need to be sanitised but if it keeps your mind at ease you can use a antibacterial spray . @Batmansmummy I definitely keep things longer than those guidelines but that’s because I have too much make up and I need to cut down. I have actually just sprayed everything with isopropanol and I’m going to throw some things out that are older or I just don’t use

I ignore the dates - I've got eyeshadow palettes marked with 6 months. No chance.

I never do, but foundation lasts 4 months (I only buy a specific one), mascara 3 months, blusher, powders, lipsticks 1 year. Palettes are supposed to last 1 year too but there's no way I could finish one! I bin them after 2 years though...

I only have the exact same make up I use, though, rarely bin anything.

Exactly @StatisticallyChallenged With what I’ve paid for some palettes, no way would I throw them away after a few months and I don’t believe the manufacturers expect that

@sayingno I only use powder foundation so I assume that’s the same as other powders. I must confess I have some older than 2 years. I definitely have sole from summer 2016 when I got married but I’m hoping sanitising them is sufficient. I also have naked palettes that must be older but I am going to get rid of those later. I don’t use them anyway

pallets are usually ok to be kept after those warnings it just means that the manufacturer won't take responsibility if you suddenly develop an reaction to it or if it causes other issues and sometimes the powders fo a bit funny . I wouldn't recommend keeping mascaras and eyeliners past there 3 or 6 month dates though ! .

@Batmansmummy I think you’re right about it being a liability thing. Mascaras etc Im usually ok with throwing away after a short time, mainly because I get bored of them but also because they’re cheaper to replace!
