Due a haircut.. do I cut it off? (with pic)

I haven't had my hair cut since September..and it has grown a lot. I did have a very long side fringe but got bored and took my sewing scissors to it a fortnight ago.. (not great but could be worse)

I'll be 52 next week, my hair is dye free of 4 years and my mother keeps muttering about not looking witchy (ie she thinks I should have it cut..she's never coloured hers and always slightly looked down on me for my very varied hair colours!)
My hair is brown but has LOTS of grey in it, streaks and more through the front, tho less noticible with a fringe.

I have no idea what to have done..booked for a week's time. Should I cut it? Am I too old for longer hair? I quite like having hair I can tie up for work but it IS greyyyyyyyyy. I could colour it again but am not sure I want to commit to the upkeep.
Honest suggestions welcomed! (This was yesterday at Xmas dinner!)

It’s impossible to see your long hair in this photograph.Confused

DontFundHate · 31/12/2019 11:18

Shoulder length, keep the colour as is. You look fabulous!

jamdhanihash · 31/12/2019 11:29

Confused did not know there are rules about how long your hair can be and there is such a thing as 'ladies of a certain age'.

Long hair which isn't in good condition can make the wearer look a bit untidy but it's all in the attitude of the wearer. Your hair is cool OP.

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/12/2019 11:35

I think the thing to consider is what colours you are wearing as well. Your skin tone changes as well as your hair colour and choosing the right clothes is as important as thinking about hair colour in terms of feeling good about yourself. I've had to stop wearing some greys and blues and go for warmer tones since I let my grey grow in.

Me thinks many doth protest too much.....

Who the fuck says that, except Alan Partridge.

JMAngel1 · 31/12/2019 17:04

You all look gorgeous - grow it down to your navels and don't give a fuck what anyone thinks!

Tomatina · 31/12/2019 17:31

There are no rules about hair length and age! In fact short hair can be ageing on some people, if that's a worry. Your hair looks thick and healthy so have it whatever length you want. If it was me, I would colour it maybe a mid brown or bronze, but that's just me. If you use a semi-permanent the grey regrowth is not obvious.

I’m 56 and have no intention of cutting off my hair, but I am growing out the blonde highlights. You can see in the photo that the blonde is now down to shoulder level (after 18 months of no highlights) and is being replaced with grey. I’m quite pleased with the effect so far and like an earlier poster I’m happy to look my age. The process is quite interesting - watching your hair change its own colour!

Extremes are ageing. Not a fan of long hair or very short once you reach a certain age.

lilgreen · 31/12/2019 19:44

There are no rules op. Ignore the over40 comment Confused.

lilgreen · 31/12/2019 19:48

I’m 48, hair is just shorter than shoulder length. I have a half head of foils with a mixture of blondes and warm brown to tone in with my natural colour. I have some grey at the front and it covers that. I wouldn’t go shorter when my hair has been around this length most of my life, why would I?

Niyamamama · 31/12/2019 19:54

@ILikeyourHairyHands

You are absolutely beautiful.

I have a high forehead as well but mine has deep lines running across it that make me look 10 years older than my 36 years. Please tell me you have botox or something otherwise life is extremely unfair.

Concestor · 31/12/2019 19:59

I'm 45, long Hair and stopped dyeing it three years ago. I'm salt and pepper all over and perfectly happy with it.

Your hair looks lovely to me. Keep it as it is.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 05/01/2020 20:56

@Niyamamama I forgot about my post, I was just looking at 'threads I'm on', no, no botox, I've never had a tan though, despite spending time in hot countries, I keep out of the sun and I've always worn giant sunglasses so don't squint in the sun.

Pretty good diet.

I've smoked for 30 years though and do like a drink so I don't think good skin is the reward for a morally good life as some like to evangelise!

I've always thought genes, sun protection and diet probably have the most effect.

I think it's probably dumb luck though, that and confidence. I'm sure your 'lines' are much less prominent than you actually think they are.

But thanks for the lovely comment!

ravensoaponarope · 06/01/2020 09:58

OP, you have great and lovely hair. I do understand wanting a change but be assured, you also look wonderful as you are.
I have very short hair and growing out my hair to be natural grey. and my mum likes it when I colour it blonde and wants me to grow it long. So there's no right or wrong.
