Due a haircut.. do I cut it off? (with pic)

I haven't had my hair cut since September..and it has grown a lot. I did have a very long side fringe but got bored and took my sewing scissors to it a fortnight ago.. (not great but could be worse)

I'll be 52 next week, my hair is dye free of 4 years and my mother keeps muttering about not looking witchy (ie she thinks I should have it cut..she's never coloured hers and always slightly looked down on me for my very varied hair colours!)
My hair is brown but has LOTS of grey in it, streaks and more through the front, tho less noticible with a fringe.

I have no idea what to have done..booked for a week's time. Should I cut it? Am I too old for longer hair? I quite like having hair I can tie up for work but it IS greyyyyyyyyy. I could colour it again but am not sure I want to commit to the upkeep.
Honest suggestions welcomed! (This was yesterday at Xmas dinner!)

I really like your hair. It looks like you have quite thick, healthy hair. I’d keep the fringe and maybe have a regular trim and look after it well. I don’t think you need a big re-style at all.

The ‘no long hair after 40’ rule is so outdated. I chopped my long hair into a long bob at 40 and hated it. It aged me instantly. Grown it back now and it suits me so much more and feels like ‘me’. I’ve also Got long dark hair in my 40s, which is apparently a double crime and ‘witchy’ according to some Grin. It’s my natural hair! I’m not getting a highlighted bob to make other people feel more comfortable!

Great colourists are hard to find but they're worth finding cos they can do all kinds of magical things. They can colour it and do so in a way that means it doesn't go brassy (super hard to achieve but worth it). They can do root smudges/stretches/blends that give you 6 months until you need to go again. You can pay a fair whack initially but then nothing for 6 months (apart from root spray, purple shampoo and conditioner!).

Silverstreaks · 27/12/2019 12:55

Your hair looks in really good nick because you're not on the dye treadmill.
A little off and some movement cut in would keep it versatile and you'd still be able to tie it up.
My hair is silver streaked. I periodically bleach sections to add colours. That way I can change colours or have blonde streaks, I'm not overly damaging my hair and I'm not tied to covering up regrowth.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 27/12/2019 13:47

I think it is too long and too grey. It had no definable style and the lack of rich colour or blonde chic is ageing. It should be cut to the shoulder - but not short - and the grey banished asap.

It's her natural colour. Nobody would say someone's natural colour was too brown or too blonde.

dontgobaconmyheart · 27/12/2019 14:03

OP - is that some I Can't Believe It's Not Butter at the Christmas table? Confused desperate to know what for now!

Personally I think it would look refreshed as a mid brown, and would give you some gloss to it that is harder get with grey. I always find I feel good when my hair is glossier. Cut wise I'd just tidy up the fringe and a trim, it's nice- age is neither here nor there!

Riddleofthesands · 27/12/2019 14:33

You look really lovely, I would just go for a good trim, maybe live with that and think about the colour a bit more, you don’t have to do it all at once. Personally I like your natural colour.

StillMedusa · 27/12/2019 14:35

don'tgobaconmyheart 'Fraid so, my heathen bunch like to shove it in their roasties!

I think I'm keeping it long, but get some more layers and tidy up my self chopped fringe. I'm going to talk to my hairdresser (whom I do trust) about whether to colour it again..and if so how!

I like the length- so maybe just a trim to tidy.
I would invest in a colour though.

HelenRose1111 · 27/12/2019 14:44

Ha I'm 52 - better cut the lot off then!!

I think a nice colour to 'richen' it up would be nice plus a good trim . You're lucky you have lovely thick hair ..

Hanab · 27/12/2019 16:31

@TARSCOUT seriously????

ChristmasCroissant · 27/12/2019 16:35

OP, you seem to have some layers or shaping at the front so I do think that helps with long hair - past a certain age I do think long curtains of one-length hair are less flattering tbh.

Ardnassa · 27/12/2019 16:42

What complete nonsense about women over 40 not having hair past shoulder length. Sali hughes has an excellent line somewhere about such a notion being just another symptom of society's desire for older women to stop taking up space.

Your hair looks in excellent nick, OP. Do whatever the fuck you want with it and don't listen to anyone else's dinosaur-like views on what you hair "should" look like.

Gingertam · 27/12/2019 16:55

I would just trim it. Please don't cut it all off. My neighbour did that and aged 20 years. She soon grew it back. As long as it's in good condition it can be long. Those saying cut it probably have very short mumsie helmet hair.

BestIsWest · 27/12/2019 18:09

The longest hair anyone over 40 should have is shoulder length

Bollocks to that.

You have nice hair.

IndecentFeminist · 27/12/2019 18:18

Pretty lady. I would take a little weight off the bottom, keep the fringe or even make it heavier/straighter. I love a fringe. A good deep conditioning treatment and play up the silver.

Sal4533 · 27/12/2019 22:23

Sal, you're an absolute beauty but trust me, there's a world of difference between 41 and late 40s. If u don't believe me, u just wait!!!!

Elfnsafe1y · 28/12/2019 07:35

I would get hi lites and I don't agree grey looks great.
The grey models have tanned skin and blue/ grey hair which does look good. Past skin with mousy grey hair is not the same. I suit warm colours eg rust, terracotta, some yellows mustard. Mouse grey hair would therefore not suit me. I will always be a blondy grey as it's warmer.
Get advice from a good hairdresser.

mintyr · 28/12/2019 08:12

Don't dye it, greys are to be embraced, you hair looks lovely it has a nice shape, just have a tidy up and bah humbug to your mum

Sal4533 · 28/12/2019 08:42

Right - Oh no!! Don't say that!!!😀. I have to say I did say to my husband that I wasn't sure how much longer I could get away with long hair!!

Sal4533 · 28/12/2019 08:43

Meant Ruggy - not right!

astralweaks · 28/12/2019 11:14

@ Sal4533
Your original hair colouring must have been ginger. Your colouring and freckles suggest that.

RuggyPeg · 28/12/2019 11:15

Sal, it's true. Ageing accelerates massively after 45. Massively. There's no comparison between how I looked at 41 Vs now at 48. I do still have long ish blonde hair though 😁
