Are waxed coats dead now?

Have seen one I like, ridiculously cheap sale price. In terms of function it would be perfect - but will people point and laugh?

(Will be spending Christmas in wellies in a place where all the well-dressed dog walking retirees wear puffer coats. I have no dog, am not retired and hate anything puffy or quilted.)

If you like it - buy it!

I have a short waxed coat and a long one. I love them both. Are they to everyone's tastes? Absolutely not but I love them, they do their job :)

I too spend a lot of time walking the dog, seeing to horses etc. Even just the smell of a waxed jacket makes me so happy :)

Floisme · 16/12/2019 10:28

I've got one - ridiculously expensive in my case but after dithering and frittering away £££ on cheaper alternatives, I bit the bullet. Love it.

I'm a city dweller with neither dog nor landrover. Not retired yet (though could get put out to grass any day).

Why care what others think? There's too much of that in society these days. Do what YOU want and sod everyone else. If it's right for your needs, just go for it.

It’s weird. I never wore them thirty years ago when I lived an actual country life ...

I live an actual country life - but they days i am working in the city it still gets worn :)

Maybe we could turn this into a waxed jacket appreciation thread/club ha

Sarcelle · 16/12/2019 10:43

I have just got one. I love it!

Deux · 16/12/2019 10:46

I have a padded one and it’s fab. So warm and dry and massive pockets. It’s not a branded one but one from a agricultural supply place though.

Ellybellyboo · 16/12/2019 10:46

I have one - I actually bought it as the style and colour were perfect for what I wanted rather than its waxed properties

I love it, I’ve only ever received compliments and loads of people asking where I got it from when wearing it.

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 16/12/2019 12:22

I'm a proper country yokel and live in waxed jackets.

SurpriseSparDay · 16/12/2019 13:33

Ok - I’m willing to admit the problem, which I’ve identified via distractions on another S&B thread.

Actually, two problems.

  1. I can afford it. If exactly the same coat was on the Rick Owens website for £2k I could happily, vicariously live in it for a few weeks and then forget all about it in pursuit of the next pretty thing. I get no joy at all from things easily within my budget.

  2. The website that sells it also sells ... Joules. Just don’t think I can. Slippery slope.

I had a man’s wax jacket when I was very large and loved it. When I became a more mainstream size I chucked it happily on eBay with all my other plus size clothes. And then strangely I begun to miss its warmth, it’s smell, it’s practicability. I now find myself creeping into stores to have a guilty little sniff and stroke. I know it’s only going to be a matter of time before I buy another.

drspouse · 17/12/2019 08:30

My DS goes to a village school and they are definitely spotted on the playground.
But I go with the puffa jacket brigade

JellyfishAndShells · 17/12/2019 08:35

My DD aged 25, very fashion forward, keeps trying to adopt my extremely vintage Barbour.

squee123 · 17/12/2019 08:35

You've inspired me to get mine out the cupboard. It comes down to my ankles. I suspect I look bloody ridiculous, possibly like some kind of mad fisherman, but it is the only coat I've ever owned that keeps all of me bone dry in a downpour

Floisme · 17/12/2019 08:40

I think Joules started off selling country clothing so personally I wouldn't hold that against them. But then, despite my city life, I am quite fond of a country clothing store and that whole queen at Balmoral vibe.

Flyingsouthwiththeswallows · 17/12/2019 08:47

Can we have a link please OP.

I would love a wax jacket I could afford

SurpriseSparDay · 17/12/2019 09:51

But then, despite my city life, I am quite fond of a country clothing store

Way back in a previous century, when I lived in the country and commuted to the city, I had the best wardrobe - half Jill Sander and half local farm shop. Those were the days ...

Iusedtobeskinny · 17/12/2019 09:56

Ooh I see your point about the joules thing, nah just get it. Who cares what other people think.

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 17/12/2019 10:00

Please post links to your lovely waxed coats. I can only visualise those mad things with leg straps that stink.

SurpriseSparDay · 17/12/2019 10:01

Xmas Blush It’s more what I would think of myself Iusedtobeskinny - “I am now a person who shops alongside people who buy Joules”.

It would be painful.

A link, Flyingsouthwiththeswallows? Sure. Once I’ve made up my mind whether I want one of the four items they have left ... Xmas Grin

OP posts:
SurpriseSparDay · 17/12/2019 10:03

leg straps?

Xmas Shock Xmas Angry

That would be a different type of thread.

I’m thinking of this type of thing, you deviant. Grin

SurpriseSparDay · 18/12/2019 09:05

Those are rather nice actually! In fact, I distinctly remember, years ago, falling into friendship with someone because she, recently returned from Australia, was wearing just such a garment.

Anyway, the thing I was considering was this. I cogitated so long that a visiting relative offered to buy it for me. (I declined as politely as I could.)

The pros were cheapness and my lack of a totally non-formal, warm-ish coat.

Cons were the certainty that being made for men it might swamp my dainty Xmas Hmm frame; and that I would never feel like the best dressed person striding across the muddy field (even if I were the only person there); and that I’d probably get more joy for my £ from a book that needs replacing - but mostly that now we’re hurtling back to pre-1970s levels of national drabness I shall, more than ever, need huge injections of glamour and excitement to offset the mortification of being English.

Cons won - which is why I’m posting the link. (I’ve never visited the website before - saw it on another thread - so no idea if it’s a genuine bargain or the wardrobe equivalent of DFS.)

Firstly, I’d like to congratulate you on the use of ‘cogitated’, excellent work.

It’s not the worst thing I’ve seen, and I’m a fan of dressing for the environment rather than poncing along like a tit in a teddy coat and kitten heels. I do think you could get away with it if the rest of you was suitably fabulous. It’s not quite as Noah and Nelly as I’d imagined.
