Nose job booked! Anyone had this done?

I've always hated my nose and it's really knocked my confidence. Finally decided to take the plunge and get it 'fixed'. So nervous and excited. Anyone else had this done? Anyone else booked? Any advice :)

I'm following this with interest because I am hoping to have mine done next year. I broke my nose as a child and as a result I have always been self conscious about it, not helped by the fact that I also bear a resemblance to concord Blush

How did you choose your clinic? One thing that scares me is having a botched op instead of ending up with a nice, neat, straight nose.

LetsDoItNow · 14/12/2019 22:01

@CruellaDeVille2019 I researched surgeon's at the Nuffield Hospital - I went to see three different surgeons and the one that sounded best on paper I also thought was best in real life. I looked him up on the General Medical Council to make sure he didn't have any restrictions etc. I saw his reviews on Real Self and I messaged several people there that had reviewed him. He specialises in nose surgery so I feel like I am in a good pair of hands. It's something I've thought about for such a long time. I saw my surgeon for the first time over a year ago and have been back for 2 further consultations afterwards.

I have the same worries about botched results however I've looked at many of the negative results on Real Self and found the majority of those type of results have been done abroad or by surgeon's who have restrictions placed on them. He is not planning on doing anything to the tip of my nose so I'm hoping that makes it less likely to look botched.

Have you had any consultations?

CruellaDeVille2019 · 14/12/2019 22:07

@letsdoitnow thanks for that, it is really helpful. I haven't had any consultations yet as I won't have the available funds until next year. I am planning on starting my research into clinics and surgeons after Christmas. It's something I am very excited about because my nose has always made me feel ugly so I feel having it made to look normal will be pretty life changing for me.

LetsDoItNow · 14/12/2019 22:19

@CruellaDeVille2019 have a look at Real Self for some reviews on surgeons and take advantage of as many different free consultations as you feel necessary. I saw three in total and went back to see the one I'd chosen a further two times. It was worth seeing the others as they all explain how they would go about doing your nose which educated me!

I feel the same as you when you say it makes you feel ugly and having it look normal would be life changing. I'm not in pursuit of a lovely cute nose.....just one that people don't notice will be fabulous for me :) Have people made comments to you? What's prompted you most to look into surgery?

OP posts:
CruellaDeVille2019 · 14/12/2019 22:40

@letsdoitnow I get a very occasional comment but it is much more about how I feel in myself about it. The trouble with a nose is that every time you look in the mirror you can't avoid it. It's there every time you pop into the bathroom, when you are doing your skin care and make up, in full length mirrors when I am getting dressed. Don't even mention photos Blush I'd love to have bigger boobs than my 34b empty socks but that is something I am able to conceal. My nose is too glaringly obvious. It even gets in the way at work sometimes which really makes it difficult to ignore how big it is Confused
What was the thing that prompted you to get booked in?

Your tips to find the right surgeon are really helpful, thank you. I agree that a UK surgeon is much more sensible than going abroad. So much easier to research a UK surgeon and understand exactly what you are being booked in for.

SteelRiver · 15/12/2019 00:18

I had mine done years ago. Best money I ever spent! It was quite sore for a couple of days and I got such a shock at my black eyes that I didn't look in a mirror again till the cast was off! Well worth it, though. I don't feel self conscious about my nose any more. it's not a miracle fix for all self esteem or confidence issues, but it helped me feel more comfortable with my face.
Best wishes for your surgery, OP.

SteelRiver · 15/12/2019 00:20

I forgot to add, I initially approached my GP about the surgery and he referred me privately to the area's NHS surgeon. I'm glad I did this as I knew he'd be good; the NHS trust him so I knew I could.

Back21970 · 15/12/2019 00:36

I had mine done 15 years ago, I was 39 and had hated my nose since my teens. Best thing I have ever done for my appearance. I too got a referral to a private surgeon through my doctor. Was a bit sore for about a week but not as bad as I expected, however the bruising lasted about a month and it was tender for several months afterwards.
Know what you mean about feeling nervous and excited, it is a scary thing to do but I've no regrets and I'm sure you'll be delighted with the results X

Rainallnight · 15/12/2019 06:29

I really fancy people with big noses, women included. I bet it’s lovely.

But I hope it goes ok for you, OP.

Savingforarainyday · 15/12/2019 06:33

Bless you @rainallnight
Would anyone be happy to say how much their op cost?

Back21970 · 15/12/2019 12:26

My op was just under £3000, but that was 15 years ago

MrsSpenserGregson · 15/12/2019 12:28

Yes, I had mine done in the 1990s - best thing I ever did, it literally changed my life. I don't imagine my surgeon is still operating now. The recovery wasn't nearly as bad as I'd feared. Sounds as though you've researched it all properly OP - good luck!

MrsSpenserGregson · 15/12/2019 12:30

Oh, one thing I will say - the tip of my nose has been permanently numb for 20+ years as a result of the op, so when I blow my nose I need to be careful that I "tidy up" properly afterwards as I can't feel what I'm doing ...! Having a mirror is handy Grin

Savingforarainyday · 15/12/2019 12:30

Thank you @Back21970

Arnoldthecat · 15/12/2019 12:41

A tip,if looking for a surgeon a good pointer is to check if he is a member of the rather appropriately named BAAPS.

baaps.org.uk

LetsDoItNow · 15/12/2019 17:01

@SteelRiver - oh that's really good to hear you are happy with it. My surgeon also works for the NHS part time so I'm taking that as a good sign!

@Back21970 - I'm so glad you are pleased with your results too and did it at a similar age to me.

@MrsSpenserGregson - really pleased you had a good experience too.

@Savingforarainyday - my op is costing £4,300. I actually had my first consultation at a private hospital and the cost was going to be just under £6k but there was no availability for when I wanted to book so he's taken me under a private wing of the NHS hospital he works at. Same surgeon and same anaesthetist so I'm quite happy it's worked out like that :)

For anyone who has got this done - did you let the surgeon guide you on what was to be done? It's the projection of my nose that I hate and nothing else really, so I haven't gone down the route of slimming or refining the tip etc.

misscockerspaniel · 15/12/2019 17:56

Mine was broken in a road accident when I was 13. I had a nose job in 2017 and my only regret is that I didn't have it done years ago.

I didn't take (or need) any painkillers after I left hospital (an overnight stay).

Do loads of research, not just on the surgeons but also on what to do/not to do before and after surgery. American sites are good for this type of info.

Sofacat · 15/12/2019 18:01

I had mine done about 12 years ago by a surgeon that specialised in cleft palette repairs. It wasn’t a massive difference but enough that I was really pleased with the result. My nose still feels ‘tight’ though. It cost £3200 and was virtually pain free and I didn’t have much bruising.

NightsOfCabiria · 15/12/2019 18:11

Had mine done privately many years ago. It was crooked and blocked due to an accident which broke it. Best thing I ever did. The only downside is it drips/runs more now but its beautiful, small, straight with a slight scoop.

Yes, be guided by your surgeon in terms of reduction to hump and alar, as well as alteration to depressor septi muscle and septum as they can only work with what you have (e.g. cant turn a Lady GaGa nose into Barbi).

Check out their definition of ‘nice’ ‘straight’ ‘feminine’ and ‘small’ just so that you’re on the same page.

Get yourself a ‘V’ shaped pillow and a travel pillow too and take Arnica to avoid bad bruising.

Good luck!

JoeyJoJoJunior · 15/12/2019 19:22

Best money I ever spent!!!!

LetsDoItNow · 16/12/2019 10:23

@CruellaDeVille2019 I've always wanted it done really, since being a teenager but just too nervous to do it. I just don't want to put up with it any longer. I still get the occasional comment about it and it just knocks me completely.

@misscockerspaniel - thanks for the tips. I have been looking at getting a wedge pillow to help with the upright sleeping.

@NightsOfCabiria thank you - I have shown him two different morphs and we have agreed to work towards one of those options. (You can do this free online for anyone who may make use of it.)

@Sofacat - my surgeon also specialises in cleft palette which is supposed to be the most complicated type of rhino. Wonder if it's the same guy. Mr H?

Don't change it too much. I know someone who seemed beautiful but her nose was all wrong - she'd had a nose job.
I also know two sisters who look almost identical but one had a blobby nose but her even prettier sister had a not blobby nose - turns out she's had a nose job. Cleverly done it can work.

Some people find an aquiline nose beautiful.

UGotTheLook · 16/12/2019 21:44

No, but I have just dropped 2k on my teeth and I'm going to get a tummy tuck next year. The only person I know who had a nose job is very happy with the result, although she does seem to blow her nose more often now! Just know that nobody else notices your nose as much as you do. The pathetic or inept people who make comments about your nose need a kick in the shins. But if you want it, go for it. It sounds like you've been unhappy with it for a while, and if you have realistic expectations of what you'll end up with, why not? I for one have never seen a natural nose that I didn't like - but one or two bad plastics jobs. As another poster has said, get a good surgeon who can work with what you've got. Good luck and enjoy!

CointreauVersial · 16/12/2019 22:52

I had one, in my twenties, don't regret it for a moment. It made a massive difference to my self-confidence. Not many people actually noticed; some people said I looked different somehow, was it a new hairstyle??

Mine was actually on the NHS, heaven knows how I swung that one (I did have to wait for two years after being referred, although ironically I ended up in a private hospital), so I can't offer any advice on choosing a surgeon.

There were plenty of discussions beforehand as to what changes I wanted - my nose was very "blobby" with a prominent bridge, and I just wanted it to look normal. The surgeon agreed to reshape the bridge and take some of the bulk out of the rest. He did a great job.

Immediately after the operation, my nostrils were packed with gauze, and it was quite alarming when this was removed the day after (think magician pulling scarves from a hat). Post-op, my face did ache, and there was a lot of swelling, which persisted for a few weeks (so don't judge the final effects too quickly). I had a "beak" which stayed on for 7-10 days, and spectacular black eyes which took a while to fade away (get some heavy-duty concealer for lingering bruises). I did everything I possibly could to avoid sneezing or blowing my nose for some weeks, and I was also ultra-paranoid that it would get a knock (so I avoided crowded bars/parties for ages afterwards). I also have a slightly numb end of nose, but this hasn't bothered me.

LetsDoItNow · 19/12/2019 20:21

@MikeUniformMike thank you - yes I agree a subtle and natural looking change is more attractive

@UGotTheLook thanks for your encouraging words!

@CointreauVersial...that is one thing I'm wondering about. How long I should be very careful about potentially getting a knock. I am currently looking at going to a gig around 20th April - do you think that will be enough time if I get it done at the beginning of Jan?

I've ordered a wedge pillow and stocked up on arnica, vit c and bromelain to help with my recovery!
