Are GHDs still the go to straighteners?

My old GHDs died recently, probably about 12 years old, but only used about 6 times a year.

I don't really want to pay £100 for something used so rarely, but also remember that in the past I had tried a few cheaper versions that turned out to burn/drag/snap hair etc and be a false economy.

Are there any cheaper brands that are as good/better? Thank you.

I prefer Cloud Nine, but they aren’t cheaper.

duggeehug85 · 14/12/2019 13:55

O always used GHDs but when they died I got a set of John Lewis straighteners. They are fab!

MerryDeath · 14/12/2019 14:21

i have had all kinds and frankly do not see the added value of GHDs. also i tried to turn on my ~6 month old curlers today that i've used probably not more than 10x and they now flash red, beep and don't heat up Angry

Methenyouplus4 · 14/12/2019 18:31

Duggee do you have a link for them?

Merry- can you return them? That's so annoying.

Still the go to straighteners for me.

fedup21 · 14/12/2019 18:41

Mine are still going strong after 16 years, they are fab. My hairdresser said that hers died recently and she bought a replacement pair and thinks they are rubbish-completely different! She recommended buying a pair of the older ones from ebay

IdiotInDisguise · 14/12/2019 18:43

Mine are now about 13 years old, use them
practically every day. Place marking as I assume they can die without a warning after such long time.

guiltynetter · 14/12/2019 18:47

cloud 9s for me, but they aren't cheaper.

Starburst8 · 14/12/2019 18:48

Mine died about 3months ago and I can't afford to replace them. My hair is neither straight nor wavy so I use them constantly. I decided to try Remmington shine therapy. They're OK for the short term as you can change the heat settings and they actually do straighten my hair. Only problem is that they sometimes snag my hair with the plates.

Crimeismymiddlename · 14/12/2019 18:50

Try She hair straighteners, about £60 and very similar to the old style GHD’s, and much better than the new style GHD’s.

PaddingtonBrown · 14/12/2019 18:54

Mine are about 12 years old and are finally giving up the ghost so (hopefully) DH is buying me a new pair for xmas!

Itsabeautifuldaytosavelives123 · 14/12/2019 18:56

I prefer Coriollis C2

Tiredmum100 · 14/12/2019 18:57

My ghds needed to be repaired a few years ago so I bought a £20 babyliss pair, I can't really tell much difference between them to be honest. Thwy work well! I do still use my ghds and have had the same pair since 2008! My dh orders a tiny part online if they break and replaces it which he's had to do twice.

mumofone2818 · 14/12/2019 19:00

Depending on your hair type i would say! I've really curly frizzy hair and no other straighners compare to my ghd's, tried so many before ai gave in and bought them and that was about 5/6 years ago. Mine are the thicker ones mind you but still couldn't use anything else!

IdblowJonSnow · 14/12/2019 19:05

I have thick unmanageable hair. When my ghds died I had a couple of babyliss ones which were both crap and then broke.
After much research I got some kipozi ones from Amazon for about £20. Was sceptical but they're as good as GHDs and you can also adjust the temp. I recommend them.

confusednorthner · 14/12/2019 19:18

My hairdresser just used kipozi ones on me and I've come home to google them!

duggeehug85 · 14/12/2019 19:34

@Methenyouplus4 I’ve been Christmas shopping at John Lewis & Partners and found this: https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-ultra-hair-straighteners/p4039440?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

Rachelfromfriends1 · 14/12/2019 19:47

I’m not impressed with them honestly.

I had a pair of GHD 4s - lasted forever.

Replaced with GHD platinum, didn’t like how difficult it was to straighten near the root due to the bulk. Ended up becoming faulty in the first week!

Returned for GHD Gold (current version). They’re simply okay and do the job. My first pair started to deteriorate after 18 months so repurchased, the new pair give the same results lol so I guess the straighteners are a bit lacklustre. I tried platinum + which definitely sleek my hair out more but are still bulky.

I’m thinking of trying something new!

Storm1966 · 14/12/2019 20:34

Babyliss 2540u titanium pearlescent from Argos £29.99 make my wavy frizzy hair poker straight.

Are GHDs still the go to straighteners?
MerryDeath · 14/12/2019 20:39

@Methenyouplus4 I'm hoping so! i've emailed feel unique who i bought them
from. very annoying!

AuntSpiker · 14/12/2019 20:40

I also have Kipozi. They're brilliant

Teabeautyandturning40 · 14/12/2019 20:42

Ahh reading with interest as my ghds died today! Only just coming up 6 years old. I have heard good things about cloud 9s but really cant afford to replace them with expensive ones right now. I am hoping for some good jan sales. But any recommendations would be welcomed!

OdeToAutumn · 14/12/2019 20:45

I bought new ghds after I felt like my very old ones started losing heat. The new ones just don’t seem as good.

fllinn · 14/12/2019 20:54

My newer GHDs also aren't as good as my old ones from years ago. If mine broke now I'd probably try something new.

Rachelfromfriends1 · 14/12/2019 20:56

I think I’m tempted by the Dyson airwrap the most, not for £400 though.
