Ethical, sustainable fashion brands

I caught the end of a radio programme about fast fashion last night (worth a listen), and it has got me thinking again about the clothes that I buy for myself and my children. I tend to mostly wear second hand at the moment, but would like to occasionally buy a few new things but not sure where to look. I'd like to support small, ethical businesses but it's almost impossible to find them without already knowing their name as they obviously don't have big online marketing campaigns!

So, I was wondering if we could have a thread recommending our favourite ethical and sustainable brands to help each other find them in an online world that does not favour small businesses?! I'm keen to buy some ethical gifts for Christmas, so recommendations for ethical, sustainable businesses that make clothes or houseware would be much appreciated.

I'll start Grin. I've come across this amazing brand disorderboutique.com/
The style isn't really 'me' unfortunately but I love their ethics and how they produce their garments.

Thanks Grin

Turtle Doves for recycled cashmere

Thanks Table, I hadn't heard of Turtle Doves. Have you ordered from People Tree? I tried some thighs a few years ago, and while they were excellent quality I found the fit a bit odd for me. I wonder if their garments suit certain body types more than others.

Got my first dress from Zuri yesterday and love it. Bright cheerful and bold patterns, comfortable fit and supports sustainable economy in Kenia. And arrives in a useful fabric tote.

I know we have different interpretations of 'ethical' but I believe these companies all manufacture in the UK so I assume they pay UK minimum wages and adhere to health and safety laws.

Community Clothing - very well priced.

Solovair - forget Dr Martens, these are the real deal. Good factory and outlet shop near Northampton.

John Smedley - knitwear. Online clearance shop.

Celtic & Co - I'm not sure if it's all made in Britain but a lot of it is.

Brora - the cashmere is made in Scotland although I'm not sure about their other clothing.

There was a thread, probably a couple of years ago, with quite a lot of other suggestions.

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 07/12/2019 08:27

Lucy & Yak. As well as being ethical they had their own version of “Black Friday “ and donated money to send girls (who live near their factory in India) to school. £220 pays for a girls education, lunch, uniform and books for a year.

Namaste- forgot to include this one.

TheTeaFairy I've had the flat, lace up shoes (still going after about 25 years) and, more recently the monkey boots. Both were true to size. The monkey boots took some breaking in but the size was fine.

TheTeaFairy · 08/12/2019 09:47

Thank you @Floisme Smile
