How can I make my hair nice and swooshy!

aboutme · 04/12/2019 19:26

I'm trying to do a bit of a makeover and my hair has never had any tlc. I cut my own hair! But now I want to look after myself and want to start with my hair!

Naturally I would say my hair is pretty crap. It's kind of fly away and can get greasy at the scalp.

What kind of shampoos/ products can I use? What kind of hair routine do ppl do for maintenance?

I'm quite clueless. I usually just wash with whatever shampoo and I don't even condition! Should be conditioning?!

I use this shampoo https://www.lookfantastic.com/vichy-dercos-energising-shampoo-200ml/11091702.html?affil=thggpsad&switchcurrency=GBP&shippingcountry=GB&thgppcccampaign=71700000047040822&adtype=pla&productid=11091702&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6PHov92c5gIVWJ3VCh1IIgPMEAQYAiABEgKrGvDDBwE

And if I'm going out, I'll blow dry my hair and wave it using straightners (watch you tube how tos). Got to be volumising powder is also good.

happyjack12 · 04/12/2019 19:36

I've started using herbal essence silicone free shampoo and conditioner (can't affoed expensive stuff) and the best thing I've done is got a round, ceramic barrel short bristle brush-its fab, shiny swishy hair- wish I'd realised years ago!!

FloraGreysteel · 04/12/2019 19:42

Spray John Frieda root booster into it before blow drying! I have a lot of hair but it's very fine and this makes it look lush and thick.

I got a keratin treatment set from Humble House which has really upped the silkiness of my hair.

ivykaty44 · 04/12/2019 19:49

Decent cut every 6/8 weeks and a lemon water final rinse or vinegar water final rinse

aboutme · 04/12/2019 22:12

happyjack12 my hair gets very knotty and I think the types of brush you've suggested might pull my hair alot.

Babyliss bighair! Has revolutionised my life. I rough dry with hairdryer then finish off. Never use straighteners anymore.

maddy68 · 04/12/2019 22:19

Change hairdresser. Get lots of layers put in to reduce the weight if it's thick

MustStopSnacking28 · 04/12/2019 22:21

I second Babyliss Big Hair. So easy to use and makes it look properly blow dried everyday! So many people have said my hair looks shiny recently and I am sure it’s thanks to this.

DianaT1969 · 04/12/2019 23:54

Could you post a photo with your face erased out? If you can afford a trip to a salon for a cut, go armed with images of what you like and ideas.

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 05/12/2019 00:00

Learn how to give yourself a great blow dry. Loads of videos on YouTube. Babyliss big hair is great for this but I find it’s not great for my thick hair as there’s just too much of it to get through and my arms ache.

When you wash your hair and are finished give it a final rinse with apple cider vinegar. It leaves your hair in absolutely gorgeous condition.

Regular trims.

aboutme · 05/12/2019 11:40

What's this apple cider vinegar rinse? Do I put neat vinegar on my hair and rinse it out?!

OP posts:
aboutme · 05/12/2019 11:41

Do you use the babyliss big hair on dry hair or wet? Clueless!

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 05/12/2019 11:51

I mix 50:50 ACV and water in a jug and pour it on. Massage it into the scalp. Let it sit for a minute then rinse it out.

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 05/12/2019 11:52

I use the babyliss when my hair is 90% dry.

ivykaty44 · 05/12/2019 12:43

I don’t know about the Apple cider rinse but we always used to rinse with diluted vinegar 50/50 warm water and malt vinegar as it helps to restor ph of the hair

championquartz · 05/12/2019 14:55

Professional blowdry. There's nothing like it. And it makes you me feel like a million dollars. When I am filthy rich and time-rich I am getting a blowdry twice a week. Grin

@FloraGreysteel can I ask does that root booster make you hair feel sticky? I've tried the plumping powders and while they work, they make my hair feel horrible. I can't stand them.

Murinae · 05/12/2019 15:02

I bought a new parlux advance 385 hairdryer (after reading a thread on here!) and it makes a massive difference. I always thought it was the products hairdressers use but with this hairdryer my hair feels the same as when I've been to the hairdressers.

puds11 · 05/12/2019 15:07

Do you not smell like chips after?

HarrietTheFly · 05/12/2019 15:08

I was bought a Dyson hairdryer for a Christmas present a few years ago. It has made a huge difference to my hair. I wash my hair when it looks greasy. My hairs quite dry because I bleach it so I try to use shampoos that say they're nourishing. I sometimes rinse it just with conditioner if it's not looking greasy but I feel it needs a bit of a freshen up and I use any oil or serum that's on offer usually to put through the ends and then I dry it. I usually put a towel on to take off excess moisture and leave to air dry for a while (if I have time) before putting in the serum and drying. The Dyson hairdryer definitely has reduced the frizziness of my hair and I really notice the difference if I'm away from home and use a different hairdryer. I don't know how much they cost now but I know they were quite pricey for a hairdryer when they first came out. I'd say they're worth it if you can afford it though.

aboutme · 05/12/2019 15:12

Omg the Dyson is £300 for a hairdryer!

HarrietTheFly · 05/12/2019 15:12

Also - I recently got one of those detangling brushes and it feels much better brushing my hair now. I didn't use to brush it very often as it felt like I was ripping my hair out when I did, but those detangling brushes are great. The best one I have was about £12 in boots but I also got a cheap one from somewhere (like a pound shop or savers..can't remember now) and it is still good.

ShockBlush

Sorry I had no idea they cost that much! I thought they were about £80!

HarrietTheFly · 05/12/2019 15:21

Sorry op I really had no idea! I've found these Dyson alternatives online... Pricing is American but maybe you could Google any the ones you like the look of and see if they're available in the UK.

I feel really bad I bigged it up so much now!
