How the flip do celebs lose weight?!

BooHaa · 23/11/2019 22:12

I'm trying to diet and then up pops a family meal, long day out, Christmas etc. So many events but nothing compared to most celebs social life!

OP posts:
DisgruntledGuineaPig · 24/11/2019 08:43

OP- you don't need to over eat at any of those events.

It comes down to will power, and when your livelihood depends upon your ability to get back to a certain shape, you are more likely to stick to your diet and exercise plan. For many, this is their job.

When you are out for the day, you dont need to chose to order a high calorie meal. When you are out for dinner, you dont need to clear your plate. When you go to a drinks party, you dont need to take any of the canapes. (Or dont have dinner first, just have a few canapes for dinner instead.)

It's also worth noting that while many celebs do have busy social lives, generally they disappear for a few weeks when dieting, then emerge with their slim new look.

Cornish2 · 24/11/2019 10:12

I think it's what you eat, my mum cooked a healthy homemade dinner of meat/fish and 3 veg everyday or we had salads.
Anything else was a treat, chocolate in your stocking not the shopping list, fruit was our snack and if you grow up on it you never develop a sugar addiction or craving for sweet food.
I eat what my body needs and then I am done, never seen food as comfort or tasty just fuel.
I agree with doing exercise however I don't exercise but I walk the dog and I work on my feet and keep weekends active with the kids never sit idol unless it's to relax and unwind and I am a healthy weight.
I often don't have time to cook a meal but I can open a tin of fish and do some microwave rice in 2 minutes but it's what your used to, if you grow up on pizza and chips that's what you'll crave, it's addictive.

BeatriceTheBeast · 24/11/2019 10:30

I seriously doubt every celebrity on the planet, grew up on salads tbh. Look at Britney Grande Frappuccino Spears and the like. That simply isn't true.

Also, seeing food as never tasty or comforting actually sounds like a disorder tbh. My DH is super slim and always has been. We eat healthily as a family, but he really enjoys his food. He wouldn't eat just for fuel. He grew up on chicken nuggets and chips. As in, that was literally the only meal he would eat for several years.

I grew up on healthy, home cooked from scratch meals. Always simple meat and veg, very few treats. I am overweight.

Just anecdata, but I'm fighting anecdata dressed up as a guaranteed plan for being slim for life above, so...

Cornish2 · 24/11/2019 11:16

seeing food as never tasty or comforting actually sounds like a disorder tbh.

Food isn't supposed to be eaten for comfort, comfort eating is a disorder.

Eating healthy as part of a balanced diet is not, your husband may well have been brought up on chicken nuggets and stayed thin but that's down to his metabolism a lot of people couldn't sustain that.

I stated a few suggestions I have such as meat, veg, fish and rice as well as salad which are all healthy choices everyday people eat but it's interesting how you pick out salad and jump to eating disorder.

Humans are not supposed to eat junk with no nutritional value for comfort, food is fuel to keep you going, the enjoyment should be vitalising your body.

Maverick66 · 24/11/2019 11:20

Convinced they have gastro bands fitted to make sure they only eat small amounts

aSofaNearYou · 24/11/2019 11:21

Well there's the personal trainers but I'm fairly sure if I knew I could make significantly more money if I kept the weight off or if my living actually depended on it I'd have the will power too.

BrieAndChilli · 24/11/2019 11:22

Most celebs have good genes to start with - they were picked to sing/act/model precisely because they were thin and pretty (sad but true)
Then they diet/take drugs/have surgery/exercise like crazy to stay thin. They can also afford personal trainers/chefs to keep them on track and they can afford cleaners/nannies/gardeners/personal assistants to do everything else for them so that all they have to concentrate on is keeping in shape.
Good styling also helps. Which of course then can also afford. Clothes tailored to your precise shape looks miles better than the off the rack primary jobbies the rest of us can afford.

BeatriceTheBeast · 24/11/2019 11:25

We eat salads too...it's hardly an insult that I picked up on that Halloween Confused.

But we enjoy our salads. They are delicious. It is really unusual to derive no pleasure whatsoever from eating. I would go so far as to say it is a disorder. Not necessarily an eating disorder, but very unusual psychology / behaviour.

I did know someone who ate purely for fuel and the things he ate were honestly things which make the average person vomit. He would take horse steaks and nuke them in the microwave till they were grey and then eat them on their own. He took no pleasure in eating, (as you claim not to), and it was definitely a symptom of something else. Most people, even super models who eat nothing but salad, enjoy their food. People who genuinely do not ever enjoy food are very unusual, to the point of it being a disorder. People who actually do enjoy their food but claim never to are also acting out a very strange relationship with food, where deriving pleasure from it is seen as immoral. I know a few of those too. It's very strange and not healthy.

Dh doesn't 'sustain' his slim physique eating nothing but nuggets now obviously btw. But he certainly did as a child. Our dcs eat a lot healthier than he ever did, but I don't delude myself that this means they will never enjoy a slice of pizza or other treat in their entire lives. I don't even think that's a good thing.

ploopsie · 24/11/2019 11:28

Eating healthy & fuelling your body is not going to necessarily make you celeb size. How many people have been around lots of female celebrities? they are generally tiny in real life with measurements similar to 10 yr olds. For most people maintaining that is hard & involves severe restriction. Like I said I used to model & was naturally lean with a small frame so could eat normally whilst friends ate cotton wool. There is no way now in my 30s after dc that I could get back to 34" hips without starving myself.

ploopsie · 24/11/2019 11:30

I love eating, the actual act of it, the celebration with friends & family, the preparing of it.

BeatriceTheBeast · 24/11/2019 11:33

And I hasten to add that I am only very slightly overweight and some of that is baby weight which I'm trying to shift. I am not morbidly obese or anything, fortunately. I do have a good appetite and good genes, so I could be a lot worse off, even eating healthy foods. I can appreciate that I am actually lucky as even eating healthy foods and a balanced diet it is easy to gain weight if you are less fortunate than I am.

YY @ploopsie. I know some women who work in fashion and yes, IRL these celebrities are very teeny. Not just the result of eating fewer treats and meat and three veg of an evening. It's their job to stay this small.

HulksPurplePanties · 24/11/2019 11:34

It's their job. And they have cooks, trainers, nannies & shady doctors to help them do it. If I had nothing else to do but be thin and pretty I would be.

BeatriceTheBeast · 24/11/2019 11:35

What @ploopsie? A model, who ENJOYED eating? No! It cannot be Halloween Wink.

The slimmest people I know seem to be the ones who love their food the most actually. They really savour what they prepare and eat. Chubbies like me tend to stuff it in as quickly as possible so they can get on with the next thing.

nocluewhattodoo · 24/11/2019 11:44

Not many celebs are a size to need to lose weight in the first place to be honest, most look healthy and slim, and I think genetics plays a huge part in a persons ability to maintain a certain weight/shape. The celebrities that do the ridiculous weight gain/loss Hello spread with fitness DVDs are con artists who purposefully gain the weight to get the bad paparazzi shots on the beach then make their 'comeback'. Scarlett Moffat springs to mind, pretty sure her DVD she claimed was the reason for her weightloss was a total lie and she'd been at some boot camp. And clearly said boot camp didn't work for long term health goals as she has gained it all back.

cherryblossomgin · 24/11/2019 11:51

They have money for trainers, home gyms and diet plans/diet pills. Also time to workout daily.

If I know I'll be eating out I will have a light lunch and probably a shake for breakfast so I have the calories to use. If you eat healthy the majority of the time an event won't really affect weightloss. If I am having a takeaway I won't have much to eat through the day. Maybe some fruit and a shake.

ploopsie · 24/11/2019 12:08

@BeatriceTheBeast Yeah I was shite, the whole waif thing came in & I was strongly encouraged to not enjoy food so much! Have you seen what kind of plans models used to do for the Victoria Secret show, mental!

When I worked in fashion I remember getting regularly sent to buy 2 single sweets from the pick & mix & I remember someone having a meltdown because I bought them the normal size portion salad when I should have bought the side salad portion size. They couldn't possibly trust themselves to eat less of the normal sized so binned it!

BeatriceTheBeast · 24/11/2019 12:11

@ploopsie

Yikes. It's a brutal industry at times, from what friends who work in fashion say. One of them was approached to be a model. At the time she was a small size 8 and 5'9", weighing about 8 stone and was told she was a bit chunky and needed to lose some weight! She said no thank you as she was about to go to uni anyway. This was a long time ago now, probably 15 years ago. Hopefully things have changed a bit..? No?

ploopsie · 24/11/2019 12:18

Yeah size 4-6 was more the norm back in the 90s/00s. As I much as I hate the Kardashian's and what they represent they have helped drive more diversity into the modelling world & more & more brands are using normal sized models as well as plus size.

Celebs & pop stars seem to be very tiny still but I presume that's due to sample sizes & the pressure to be a fashion icon.

humanfemale · 24/11/2019 12:30

To start with most of them will be genetically on the slim side (and often tall) which helps enormously.

After that, plenty time and money and motivation to devote to having the best possible physique. Because it's part of the job.

ploopsie · 24/11/2019 12:37

@humanfemale are you talking about models or actresses or singers? Most actresses aren't tall, bring petite tends to look better on screen.

Do people think all famous people are genetically slim?

thisenglishlife · 24/11/2019 12:39

In celebrity interviews, they always say that they eat fish, chicken or turkey for lunch and dinner (with salad or vegetables).

Gwenhwyfar · 24/11/2019 12:40

"How many people have been around lots of female celebrities?"

I've met a few actresses and they are really thin in real life. TV adds pounds. The ones I saw were not unhealthily thin, just very thin compared to the average woman of their age in the UK.

rookiemere · 24/11/2019 12:41

I believe most smoke but in secret. Apparently Duchess of cambridge does and so does Gwynneth Paltrow .

TileFloors · 24/11/2019 12:45

There’s a difference between enjoying food - the taste, smell, texture - and eating for comfort. The former tends to mean you choose good quality, healthy, ingredients and savour every bite. The latter tends to mean you mindlessly stuff in junk. The former makes you feel physically and mentally good afterwards, the latter makes you feel bloated and anaesthetised, in my experience,

Slim people often enjoy food just as much as, or more, than larger people. They just don’t use it to try and meet needs that aren’t for food. They don’t try to soothe emotional distress with empty carbs.

BeatriceTheBeast · 24/11/2019 12:54

@tilefloors

Well then we are arguing from completely different definitions of the english language. Yours has a lot of pejorative assumptions which just aren't true for me. I gain much more comfort and satisfaction from a beautiful salad than from a quick sandwich grabbed on the run, which I stuff in because it's just fuel and I need to eat. I associate comfort, satisfaction and pleasure with delicious, healthy food, not shitty chocolate bars.
