I wore it to a wedding and felt OK but not sure it's eveningy enough. I'm size 16 to 18, not great in heels but have something I can wear which worked before.

I could dress up with blingy earrings?

The alternate option is either black sequin dress I wore last year or black velvet trousers and brown sequin top with black velvet jacket so more like a tux type effort? Confused

I'm not confident at womenly dressing up!

The shape is fine for evening wear, I'm not sure about the material, it looks more like a summer day dress. I can't believe they've photographed it so poorly, it's creased and doesn't fit the model.

Youngatheart00 · 23/11/2019 19:48

Yes I think you could wear it with some decent bling and heels to dress it up.

Mumteedum · 23/11/2019 19:48

It does crease easily! It's a heavy cotton with slight sheen.

I wouldn't wear it to a black tie do personally

Mumteedum · 23/11/2019 20:19

Hmmm veering away now!

Black tie dresses should be below the knee really.

nocoolnamesleft · 23/11/2019 22:54

None of my black tie dresses are that short.

MissLadyM · 23/11/2019 23:04

It's lovely and you feel good in it- that's the main thing. Just bling it up and enjoy yourself!

Ayemama · 23/11/2019 23:07

I love that dress but I wouldn't wear it to somewhere so formal, but if you feel comfortable in it And dress it up then I don't see how anyone could say anything.

Goldenchildsmum · 24/11/2019 01:41

I'd say no

AuntyElle · 24/11/2019 01:45

I really love that dress! How seriously ‘black tie’ is the event? What kind of do is it?

AlexaAmbidextra · 24/11/2019 02:08

Looks like a day dress to me. Not really dressy enough for black tie imo.

nakedavengeragain · 24/11/2019 02:15

I'd say no. Wrong length for black tie and unfortunately the fabric looks like it would wrinkle at a glance. .

The back sequin sounds perfect. No one will remember you wearing it before and if you have different shoes and bag, statement jewellery then it will look a different dress. What about red shoes and lipstick and a satin black sash tie (easy to knock up on a sewing machine) for the waist. Or champagne colour sash, shoes and bag

Wer2Next · 24/11/2019 07:06

No

nogooddeedgoesunpunished · 24/11/2019 07:27

Don't think it's formal enough. Too short and wrong material but it's beautiful

cherryblossomgin · 24/11/2019 07:39

It looks more like a summer day dress.

justilou1 · 24/11/2019 07:42

Nope... Sorry. It’s gorgeous, but black tie generally means long and sparkly. You could potentially get away with it if it were sparkly fabric, but you’d be pushing your luck even then.

Debenhams has some nice options.

Sittinonthefloor · 24/11/2019 07:53

Black tie doesn’t have to be below the knee. ‘Cocktail’ dresses aren’t. I’m a short arse and only ever wear knee length & above. If it was white tie you’d need long, but that style is fine for bat. I think you could get away with it if you wore a fur stole, the shape is lovely but agree the fabric looks a bit creasy.

stucknoue · 24/11/2019 07:54

Depends on the event, the ones I attend need to be full length or mid calves at least and the material looks plain cotton rather than evening dress to me. Quiz and Debenhams have nice dresses for a similar sum of money

stucknoue · 24/11/2019 07:55

@Sittinonthefloor actually black tie does usually mean knees covered. Cocktail length is frowned upon in many circles. The key is to get guidance from the event

mathanxiety · 24/11/2019 07:55

No, I wouldn't wear it to a black tie thing. It's a lovely dress for a semi formal summer event. I love that colour.

You can't go wrong with black / sequins / velvet for black tie.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 24/11/2019 07:56

It is a day dress imo

Spandang · 24/11/2019 07:58

75% of people at a black tie do will be wearing a black dress or sequins (or both). So the question is if you’re worrying now, are you going to wear it, get there and then feel out of place.

I say that from experience Smile

SeaRabbit · 24/11/2019 08:02

What's wrong with wearing what you wore last year? The men will all be doing that...
