Can I wear this to a black tie do?

www.lindybop.co.uk/selema-bottle-green.html

I wore it to a wedding and felt OK but not sure it's eveningy enough. I'm size 16 to 18, not great in heels but have something I can wear which worked before.

I could dress up with blingy earrings?

The alternate option is either black sequin dress I wore last year or black velvet trousers and brown sequin top with black velvet jacket so more like a tux type effort? Confused

I'm not confident at womenly dressing up!

Thank you for all replies. You're v helpful. No, decided not to go with the green. It's a shame buying dresses that dint get worn again isn't it? I don't get to many do's really or weddings etc.

I went to same event last year. There were plenty of cocktail length dresses. It's an awards do.

I don't have lots of money to buy new stuff so may end up wearing same as last year though need different shoes if I do. My feet were killing me!

Stuck - black tie really doesn’t mean long dresses only, knee length is fine Hmm. Has been this way since about 1920. White tie is definitely long dresses. But cocktail dresses are completely fine for black tie unless other instructions are specifically mentioned on the invitation.

Which particular circles frown at cocktail dresses? They don’t sound like fun parties!

I would definitely wear it to a black tie do and have worn similar. It's lovely and unusual.

Clymene · 24/11/2019 23:23

It's absolutely fine to wear to a black tie do. I have worn similar to loads. Don't feel like you need to dress in a high street dress.

BubblesBuddy · 25/11/2019 00:18

The big problem is that it’s cotton. It’s obviously a day dress. I think it just would look like a cheaper material and not evening wear.

Black tie is knee length, midi or long - unless you are under 21. Black isn’t important. Wear what colour you like. DD has looked amazing in red.

I like velvet trousers and a sparkly top. Always works. Dark navy, plum or dark green look great.

Tippexy · 25/11/2019 00:21

Cotton is definitely not a black tie material.

Black tie is generally full length and as bling as you like.

Tippexy · 25/11/2019 00:22

And agree that cocktail dresses are not really ‘enough’ for black tie.

user1471449295 · 25/11/2019 00:24

That’s not a black tie event dress.

LadyB49 · 25/11/2019 00:32

Love your dress but not for this event. Love the red dress in the link to Debenhams.

StCharlotte · 25/11/2019 19:54

For the Oscars of course it's not enough. For an industry awards do, it's fine. And I think you said it has a sheen? That will make a difference.

Black tie is knee length, midi or long - unless you are under 21. And don't forget your tiara if you're married Grin

Honestly It's 2019. Pretty much anything goes (within reason).

I've worn Lindybop to black tie events. I always wear the underskirt and then bling up with great accessories and shoes. It looks amazing and often very different to the standard black sparkly dress that can be standard at these things.

BigFatBloomers · 25/11/2019 22:11

If you do want to get a new dress.
Scarlett and Jo have some really nice ones and various discounts.

BigFatBloomers · 25/11/2019 22:13

The other option is to have a look on eBay where there are loads of dresses that have only been worn once or twice.
I always get wedding outfits from eBay.

Bluntness100 · 25/11/2019 22:19

I also don't think it's black time suitable and to be fair what you have sounds fine, no reason not to wear again.

I'm not a fan of Lindy bop dresses in general though. Having been a size 16 in the past I'd say something more column like and streamlined is way more flattering.

Rosere · 25/11/2019 22:21

I think you could full bling/hair/make up that and high heels and it would be appropriate.
Ultimately wear what you're comfortable in. Last event I went to, which was with an organisation with strict dress codes, there were ladies in bum skimming sequins and all sorts.

BigFatBloomers · 25/11/2019 22:23

short purple, black and blue

red floor length

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 25/11/2019 22:26

You don't have to wear a long dress for a black tie do.

The style of that dress is fine for black tie, but I agree that the material might be a bit too cottony. But I don't think it's a total no go tbh.
