What's the EASIEST way to style naturally wavy/curly/frizzy hair nice and sleek with a bit of bounce at the ends?

I am cack-handed and have no patience with styling hair.

Tried the Curly Girl Method for a while with my curly/wavy hair but it just doesn't suit me.

Hair is longish (past my shoulders) with a fringe. I like it best when I have it blow-dried fairly straight but with a bit of a bounce/wave at the ends - or elongated beachy waves.

What's the most basic technique that I might be able to master? Willing to buy any tools/products necessary, and to watch any good youtube tutorials!

I have GHDs and Babyliss tongs, and am about to buy my 2nd Babyliss Big Hair after my old one conked out - I rely on it for my fringe. I have tried it on the rest of my hair but found it didn't smooth out the frizz, and I didn't know how to get the waves at the ends. All the tutorials I've seen involve "rough drying" first - which is fine if you have straight hair but leaves mine too frizzy.

Help!

I have the same sort of hair. I sometimes use my Babyliss big hair but to be honest the best way I’ve found to get the effect you want is to use lots of leave in conditioner & then put in very big rollers all over & sit under my ancient hood hairdryer on a stand, like the ones hairdressers had of old. That way it comes out smooth with just a curl at the bottom

Your hair sounds just like mine! I bought a GHD glide after seeing it recommended on here. The first hair product, after 47 years on the planet, that I can say has truly transformed my hair. It's so easy to use, just plug in and brush. My thick, frizzy shoulder length hair is sleek and shiny, but still has body. And I can wear it down all day. I absolutely cannot recommend it enough.

Great tips, thanks both! Don't have room for a hood, but will check out the GHD Glide

Rollers. Get the soft type you can sleep in, in jumbo size. Put them in before bed when your hair in very slightly damp. Works like nothing else.
(if you are married/partnered you may need to have the 'roller chat' with them Smile).

I think I have some sleep rollers somewhere. Do you rough dry your hair first? How do you make sure the hair is smooth-ish before you roll it?

And with the GHD Glide, what's the trick to getting a bit of a curl at the ends?

You just need to comb through with a wide-tooth comb and then roll. Some smoothing-type product helps, too.
I don't rough dry, I let it air dry, but you could certainly rough dry if needed.

haverhill · 18/11/2019 19:27

There are tons of YouTube videos about all types of rolling techniques you can check out.

Thanks haverhill. Will look for some tutorials

Jose eber curling wand is amazing. Bit pricey but will do the job. Eliminates frizz. Old fashioned heated rollers also do the job too but time consuming
My daughter has frizzy afro hair unlike me and I use loreal dream lengths leave in conditioner (use sparingly) and it works a treat. Try using a co wash instead of using a separate shampoo and conditioner. If that's not for you try a shampoo aimed at afro hair they usually are targeted toward curly frizzy hair and they would be good for you. Most boots and superdrug stock a good range now.. Palmers, mane and tail, Shea moisture, Cantu ect

Mauroz1966 · 19/11/2019 07:23

I always had thick, dry, wavy and frizzy hair. No longer dry and frizzy since I switched to using a sulfate free shampoo, micro fibre towel and satin pillow case. After washing (scalp only) I apply a little hair oil and a leave in conditioner. Leave to air dry a little then use the Revlon one step air dryer and volumiser (Amazon) Best hair tool I've ever used .salon blow dry results in 10 minutes!

OldGrinch · 19/11/2019 07:41

I second the Revlon tool above its amazing. On Amazon for about £38 at moment. Transformed my frizzy hair and have a lovely bounce to ends. It's like a hot air styler with a super sized fat brush! Does not spin like Big Hair but imo better for frizzy hair

MaterMetella · 19/11/2019 07:50

Interested in threes recommendations- can I check if it is the revlon dryer and volumiser being recommended (which looks like a roller brush) or a recon dryer and styler (which looks like a paddle brush).

Also, any recommendations about what you do when you think you’ve got your hair looking nice and after 5 mins outdoors it looks frizzier and coarser?

OldGrinch · 19/11/2019 07:52

It's called Revlon one-step Hair dryer and Volumiser sorry can't do clicking link

Alfr · 19/11/2019 07:53

I scrape mine back in a high pony tail when its wet, run a bit of serum through, then twist the pony tail, and tuck the end into the hair tie. I then forget about it til it's dry - voila, straight hair with curly ends.

MaterMetella · 19/11/2019 07:58

Old grinch - many thanks :)

Mauroz1966 · 19/11/2019 08:13

I forgot to add that I use hairspray afterwards. My hair looks pretty good for 2/3 days.

MaterMetella · 19/11/2019 08:17

Mauroz1966- also thanks :)

AaaaaaarghhhWhereAreMyKeys · 19/11/2019 08:37

Just to echo what Mauroz1966 said, my hair has needed v little styling since I switched to sulphate and silicone free shampoo and conditioner. The only other product I use is Macadamia Natural Oil Healing Oil Spray (think this may have some silicones but I only use it on the ends. Also loved my Babylis Big Hair before it stopped turning :-(

Mauroz1966 · 19/11/2019 09:17

MaterMetella you're welcome x

I have that Revlon one step dryer and it's fantastic for my previously frizzy hair. I wash and condition with tresemme 7 day smooth then squeeze out as much water as possible and apply 7 day smooth heat activated treatment, comb through and then leave to air dry until it's just damp then dry with the Revlon brush and finish with straightener if I have time. It's brilliant for me as I have ms and struggle with using a hairdryer and a brush together (and ended up with frizzy hair anyway).

'Rough dry' sounds terrible for frizzy hair - do you mean rubbing with a towel? Definitely don't do that. Just squeeze as much water as you can out then wrap in a towel or turban for a while then comb and air dry until it's ready to finish with the dryer.

lawn · 21/11/2019 07:53

Hi all, thanks for all the tips!

Have ordered the Revlon tool. Is it possible to do a bit of loose curl at the ends with this, or will I need to use tongs as well for that?

OP posts:
ChristineBaskets · 21/11/2019 12:27

I don't find it possible to do a loose curl with it as it's not a round brush really - I wave it a bit with straighteners after drying sometimes. I hope you like the Revlon dryer, let us know how you get on!

lawn · 22/11/2019 16:48

Ok so I got the revlon one step. Cowashed (I do that anyway, microfibre towels, all the usual stuff), deep conditioned. Applied Kerastase Ciment Thermique, serum, GHD heat protect spray.

Used the Revlon tool on damp hair but dried my roots a bit first as advised in a YouTube tutorial. Hmm. Not quite smooth and sleek enough. Had to use straighteners, and then a wand to get a bit of bounce.

Will try again. Maybe different products / wetter hair or something
