Help me find comfortable trousers that are not jeans but are casual.

First of all I will admit I need to lose weight. I am a size 16/18, 5'6" and age 57.

I live in the countryside and am retired. My trousers need to be hardwearing and comfortable. Increasingly I am finding jeans very irritating. They don't ever fit right and my newest ones (from Joules) lose their shape really quickly. I don't want tight jeggings either.

So what do I look for? I tend to wear fine knit oversize jumpers so loose baggy trousers don't work either. I think I want slim cut trousers but with an elastic/comfortable waist.

Am I missing something? Can anyone point me in the right direction? I don't need to be cutting edge but at the same time I don't want to be frumpy.

I am beginning to think this is an impossible request!!

I am size 12/14 and have the same problem. My stomach is more like a 13 and legs a 10. It is impossible to find anything that fits so I resort to leggings. I desperately want some decent jeans

Apileofballyhoo · 17/11/2019 17:35

Hopping on your thread to see what people suggest, OP. Look for high waisted is my only advice. It seems difficult to get straight cut high waisted casual trousers for summer or winter that are well cut.

What shape are you?

SophiaLarsen · 17/11/2019 17:47

M&S stretchy jeans are high waisted, slim fit and come in a range of colours and aren't particularly denim like. I have navy blue, green and black. My favourites were the black but they fade fast.

I have slim legs and a bigger tummy so it sounds similar shape to you. I am hourglass (big boobs, in at the waist then out again). This style fits well for countryside out and about with wellies etc.

Lumene · 17/11/2019 17:49

Have you tried chinos?

Apolloanddaphne · 17/11/2019 17:54

I am an apple shape. I don't like chinos at all.

And I am not keen on joggers either. Gosh I sound so demanding but really I am not.

Came on here to say M&S is your friend - they do lovely cotton Chino type trousers that sit high on the hips. So comfy (like a good pair of jeans), but not jeans. Tuck into boots/wellies well too.

AfterSomeAdvice1234 · 17/11/2019 18:04

Oops just saw you're not keen on chinos. Even if they were slightly higher waisted and more fitted?

Zinnia · 17/11/2019 18:05

If budget permits, canvas twill trousers from Toast are fab (try eBay too, Toast sizing is huge so go down a size); also John Lewis Kin "balloon" trousers (again, size down) are super-comfy and a nice thick twill. They are mostly sold out online annoyingly but seem to be in stores still.

Apolloanddaphne · 17/11/2019 18:06

I may need to have a trip to M&S to check out their selection.

Have you looked at cargo pants or walking trousers? They're not the cheapest but will be hard wearing (you might even find some fashionable ones!)

MNOverinvestor · 17/11/2019 18:09

These www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/women/bottoms/trousers-leggings-sweatpants/ezy-ankle-length-trousers are my saviour (and I'm a v similar size to you). V neat on, thanks to the (invisible) elastic at the back, almost indestructible. If you live near a branch, they'll even shorten them for free.

FlamingoAndJohn · 17/11/2019 18:12

I was going to suggest Joules Henesford Chino but it sounds like you might have tried them already.

BreadSauceHmm · 17/11/2019 18:17

GAP trousers are pretty comfy and they have elasticated options too. Not everything of theirs is hard wearing though so you'd have to look at the reviews to get an idea of thickness.

Chewbecca · 17/11/2019 18:22

these Wallis jeggings are my most comfy ever trousers. They’re not skinny or legging like at Allam just soft, straight and comfy. At this price - worth a try?

Apolloanddaphne · 17/11/2019 18:24

I love Uniqlo but alas none around here. Same with Gap. I live on the east coast of Scotland. Shopping is rubbish. But I will be in London next weekend so I can scope out other shops.

Maybe look at Landsend

Hoppinggreen · 17/11/2019 18:26

Try Landsend, think they’ve got a sale on at the moment as well

Apolloanddaphne · 17/11/2019 19:11

I always thought of Landsend as deeply frumpy but actually they look like they have some decent stuff. May order some trousers to try. Anyone know how their sizes are?

Myself and DM were looking at Massimo Dutti online the other day, OP, it might be worth casting your eye over the website.

Apolloanddaphne · 17/11/2019 21:08

Will do. Thanks.

Apartment pants?

These just came up as a Facebook ad.

Maybe a bit too much fabric for you?

Zinnia · 17/11/2019 21:26

Ooh I've just remembered these Community Clothing denim work trousers - been wanting to try these for ages.
