Dry lips (crusting and disgusting). What's the answer?

Has anyone got a miracle solution for cracked, dry lips, either temporary or permanent? This weather plus central heating makes mine look awful. I must have spent hundreds of pounds on various lip balms/ointments/creams over the years to no avail. I know about keeping hydrated but I still crack! TIA.

Is cortibalm called anything else? It doesn’t seem to come up on amazon?

Velveteenfruitbowl · 11/11/2019 16:25

Jurlique love balm is amazing

queenbeeof3 · 11/11/2019 16:27

Best thing is Bepanthen!!!

Yes, the baby rash cream!

Apply it before going to bed and leave it on until the morning, you'll be amazed.... Smile

I heartily second the vote for Nuxe's 'Reve de Miel' lip balm. I had cracked and sore lips for decades, tried everything. This is the only thing that works for me. I'd avoid anything with petrochemicals in, though; they will not moisturise.

If you have actual sore skin & peeling, rather than just dryness, then it's worth speaking to a GP, because 'exfoliative cheilitis' is a thing, and it is miserable. You may need a short course of steroid cream to settle it down, so you can go back to using a balm.

Good luck!

8hour cream

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 11/11/2019 16:43

I love Melvita Arnica.

Yes to Blistex Relief Cream in the metal tube. My lips used to always crack & bleed during winter but regularly using this cream has helped to prevent it. I've also discovered Eurcerin Aquaphor (Vaseline texture) which I've been using on my cracked and bleeding hands - it's been amazing. I'm going to also give it a go on my lips to see how it fares against Blistex.

runny honey and caster sugar, a teaspoon of each, works as a good lip scrub.

there's a good (and cheap) W7 lip-scrub, in a lipstick shaped tube: cheap, and effective.

also, try using a lip oil. there's a few on the market, but there's a decent Avon one, costs around £7. The oil seems to soak in better and be less irritating than normal lip balm.

I have really struggled and been through everything. Was recommended cortibalm which I have to buy through eBay and get shipped from the states and it has really made a difference. It has a small amount of hydrocortisone in it ( a mild steroid) which I know scares people but as someone with eczema and whose sone has severe eczema I have spoken to dermatologists who are adamant that a mild steroid if fine ( has to be used every day for 5 years straight to thin the skin).
I only use once a day for a few days when I feel my lips start to get chapped and they rarely get into as bad a state as they used to.
I use copious amounts of the eucerin lip treatment otherwise.

Lasinoh makes non nipple products I have a lip balm of theirs think I got it in Waitrose
It’s very good overnight then I use bliss from a pack I got in America then bought here it has a lip scrub in and a cleanser it was lovely I need to buy more. Might have a look at the nuxe product

Allegorical · 11/11/2019 16:57

Just seen someone posted up thread about it. It really does make a difference.

YourHandInMyHand · 11/11/2019 17:14

The O Keefes stuff is amazing. Tried pretty much every lip remedy going last year while I was pregnant and this was the only one that worked.

Their "working hands" hand cream is also amazing FYI.

LemonPrism · 11/11/2019 17:17

Blistex intensive care is the only thing that works for me

LemonPrism · 11/11/2019 17:19

@Thehagonthehill Vaseline actually drives lips out

Titsywoo · 11/11/2019 17:22

Don't lick them. This dries mine out more than anything. And don't pick them. I use Vaseline a couple of times a day at this time of year as the central heating dries them out and it's fine as long as i dont lick!

Itsjustmee · 11/11/2019 17:23

Don’t laugh 😂 I used external thrush cream by mistake
Bloody Amazing cleared up my cracked lips overnight 😂
But I second nuxe lip balm as well

MattBerrysHair · 11/11/2019 17:35

Another vote for O'Keefs. I was also going to say that you may have a secondary yeast infection if they are always cracked and sore. I had terrible sore weeping eczema around my mouth and I needed a course of canestan before tackling the eczema.

BitOfFun · 11/11/2019 17:45

Are you allergic to lanolin? If not, try Lanolips.

resipsa · 11/11/2019 18:31

Thanks everyone. Good ideas!

Vasoline doesn't dry lips,it is also good on your heels to keep the skin soft in summer.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 11/11/2019 20:14

How much water are you drinking daily? Dry lips are always the first sign of dehydration for me

CTRL · 11/11/2019 20:15

Can I point out that Vaseline (the one in the tub with the blue flip top lid) is moisturising.

Vaseline in the little tins and other brands which are just petroleum jelly - those aren’t moisturising and just sit on the skin.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 11/11/2019 20:19

8 hour cream during the day then before you go to bed, really really thick Vaseline- go over the lip line so a bit like clown make up

Richlyfruited · 11/11/2019 20:28

I've recently discovered No 7 Protect & perfect lip cream which has really sorted my lips out! I'm constantly biting mine (nervous habit) and they get really sore and dry in this weather.

Geppili · 11/11/2019 21:45

Dr Bronner's organic lip balms made with avocado oil and Nuxe Reve de miel.
