Wedding ring help please, anyone got silver they've had for years?

I'm getting married in December and looking for a wedding ring, on a budget, never wear gold as it doesn't suit me. Had seen a nice couple of silver rings from Ola Gorie (Scottish/Orkney jeweller) but have since read that silver isn't suitable for a wedding ring as not durable. Can't stretch to platinum and white gold apparently can need re plating. I had an 18ct white gold ring last time which was beautiful and didn't need re plating but due to budget am probably looking at 9ct if I go for white gold at all. I've got a silver ring I've worn for 25 years that is fine but bent a bit out of shape, I could live with that. Any knowledge or advice gratefully received!

You’re right sterling silver isn’t strong enough to last a lifetime. White gold does usually need replating, but my wedding ring is heirloom white gold and has been worn for 60+ years, never needed replating. What’s your budget?

IlikebigMutts · 01/11/2019 13:51

Hi only about £250. Is your ring 18ct white gold? I've been told that makes a difference as to whether it needs re plating. I was also thinking of looking at second hand as well

Should have also said I'm not a spring chicken! So not looking at wearing ring for 40 years, however would like to pass it on to my daughter

Dh's is silver. Worn for 17 yrs so far. He's had it re-shaped a couple of times but it's holding up.

IlikebigMutts · 01/11/2019 13:55

Thank you for that, my partner is looking at titanium as has job where he can only wear very plain ring and I did look at this for myself but wanted something with a bit of a pattern on and not just plain.

My engagement ring was incredibly expensive

My wedding ring is white gold and cost me £299!!!

I love it. I’ve had it replayed once. Cost me like £30? It’s so vintage looking

threesecrets · 01/11/2019 14:16

Consider titanium

MyKingdomForBrie · 01/11/2019 14:17

Just look at second hand.

Rainbowshine · 01/11/2019 14:20

I have a sterling silver band and no engagement ring so it doesn’t rub up against anything. Cost £100 eight years ago. No signs of deteriorating. I do take it off for heavy duty tasks around the house.

GrumpyHoonMain · 01/11/2019 14:22

Generally 18c and 24c white gold needs replating (but I have had jewellery passed down to me in both carats and it never needed replating). 9c tends to be sturdier as there isn’t as much gold content and so rarely does.

BubblesBuddy · 01/11/2019 14:32

Ernest Jones has loads of 9ct white gold wedding rings for under £199. A handful of 18 ct ones are not much more. They are a better choice than silver and are classic rings at that price. Standard D or flat.

TwattingDog · 01/11/2019 14:33

What style would you like?

Wonkybanana · 01/11/2019 15:08

Mine is not a million miles away from this one, ie quite chunky. 42 years and counting, and it's still in perfect condition. Not worn thin, the pattern is still intact. I don't know how you'd go on if you wanted a plain traditionally sized band, but if you're after something like mine, go for it.

BuffaloCauliflower · 01/11/2019 16:41

@IlikebigMutts yes it’s 18ct white gold. It’s an unusual eternity ring design so would be hard replate. It belonged to my DGM and I don’t think she ever had it done, it definitely wasn’t done in the last 20 years. The jeweller I took it to for cleaning was very impressed at how it had lasted

OllyBJolly · 01/11/2019 17:30

My ring is white gold and I've had it replated once (in 6 years). It cost £10.

SuperSange · 01/11/2019 17:39

Try palladium. It's the same price as yellow gold and looks the same as platinum. It's a solid metal too, so never needs refinishing.

Skinnychip · 01/11/2019 17:43

Palladium is actually really expensive at the moment but would have thought you would be able to get a 9ct white gold ring for that budget.

Linnylinn1 · 01/11/2019 17:57

OP when I got my ring I bought it from a gallery that had a jewellery section and had the “OWN ART” scheme. Look into it, it’s a 0% loan that allows you to buy art and because my ring was designed by an artist and sold in the gallery the scheme applied to the ring. We could have paid upfront but there’s never harm in spreading it out if you can.

Have you any interest in an antique ring? Auctions are a really good way of picking up a bargain.

bonzo77 · 01/11/2019 18:01

My platinum one was £300. If you want white metal how about titanium?

AliceLittle · 01/11/2019 18:46

Tungsten. Incredibly hard metal and strong. Loads of examples on Etsy for less than £100

complicat3d · 01/11/2019 18:50

Mine is argentinium
It was £9. It hasn't bent, tarnished or scraped. I never take it off because I forget so it's been bleached, dipped in most household chemicals, done all sorts of diy. I'm very unprecious and it looks as good as the day we bought it.
It was bought as a placemark ring until we could afford something better. I will never replace it now. I would ruin a less hardy ring

Bapa · 01/11/2019 19:35

That ring I posted is 18ct and within your budget
