Told the hairdresser I wanted a blunt cut, yet she’s gone ahead and put layers in

Grrr

OP posts:

So frustrating! I get my dh to cut in a straight line around the bottom now as I don't trust hairdressers to let me grow my layers out. They nod and smile and then announce they are 'just' using whatever technique in my hair when they are already half way through making the ends all jagged or 'cutting into it to give it some movement/ take the weight out'. Hope it grows out quickly OP.

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 28/10/2019 13:38

Urgh. Yes. Every. Single. Time. Then all the different length ends frizz out in different directions.

SelkieSaAbhaileAnois · 28/10/2019 13:41

I feel your pain. My hair is very very thick and no matter how many times I asked for an undercut I was talked out of it and given layers, which just contributed to the frizz and wouldn't lie flat. Only when undercuts became more mainstream did the resistance stop. Which proves it was nothing to do with my hair. It was just to do with what the hair dresser wanted to do.

Stay away from hairdressers for a year! Mine is finally finally all one length with an undercut. I feel like I've wanted it this way for 20 years!

MangoSalsa · 28/10/2019 13:50

Barber that does women’s haircuts too is a good bet.

Cinammoncake · 28/10/2019 14:11

This has happened to me so many times OP. Change hairdresser until you find one who doesn't do this, they are out there (although seemingly rare!)

Aquamarine1029 · 28/10/2019 14:13

This is why I haven't set foot in a salon for 20 years.

Winterdaysarehere · 28/10/2019 14:16

I sat stealth boasting about mine all being same length now...
Glasses off she side swipes a fringe!!.
Bitch...

Winterdaysarehere · 28/10/2019 14:17

*my glasses

  • her the bitch.
leomama81 · 28/10/2019 14:23

Oh this is a nightmare. I had awful (unwanted and also very uneven) layers put in by a hairdresser after growing them out for years. I've now changed hairdressers and had them all cut out and regrowing. I told the new hairdresser I'd left my last one because of the layers and just really talked a lot about how much I hated them and how unhappy I was they'd done that. I think you just have to get very loud and firm about it.

Beautiful3 · 28/10/2019 14:25

I told mine last time I had highlights, no trim please. At ths end she said but you really need it, I replied no thanks. She started trimming it and said I'll be so quick and its hardly anything off the length. I look in the mirror at the end and its a fucking inch!!!! Took me 3 months to grow 😣

DontCallMeShitley · 28/10/2019 14:33

Buy a Crea clip or similar and cut your own.

I gave up with hairdressers a long time ago, if I ever did find one that did what I asked they would move on, never to be seen again. You Tube shows you how to cut it with a clip.

I have a set but still cut it with just a comb and scissors as I forget I bought the clips.

Cinammoncake · 28/10/2019 14:58

I told the new hairdresser I'd left my last one because of the layers and just really talked a lot about how much I hated them and how unhappy I was they'd done that. I think you just have to get very loud and firm about it.

This is my strategy too. Preferably reminding them each time or they forget

nellyitsme · 28/10/2019 15:02

I know what you mean. I'm still searching for the ONE. Who does as you ask, doesn't leave it with one side longer than the other, or one side thinner than the other etc etc. I live in hope that one day I'll find a hairdresser that can cut properly

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 28/10/2019 15:51

I’ve gone back to a pixie cut after finally finding a hairdresser who is amazing! It’s taken me 9 years to find one who can cut a pixie exactly as I like it, I’ll be devastated if she ever leaves.

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 28/10/2019 15:54

Oh yes this is why I only visit the hairdressers once a year.
They never listen! Or make up their own language.

ParisInTheSpringtime · 28/10/2019 16:28

Mine did that too. So frustrating. Also, what part of “cut my bob as short as you can WITHOUT CUTTING IN AT THE BACK” is difficult to understand. You have my sympathy.

HMArsey · 28/10/2019 16:37

What does 'cutting in at the back' mean?

ParisInTheSpringtime · 28/10/2019 17:01

@HMArsey that it should be cut straight around (blunt) rather than into the nape of the neck.

Itsashame · 28/10/2019 17:45

I never understand these threads, it maybe I’ve always had good hairdressers. If a client says “no layers under any circumstances” surely the hairdresser won’t cut layers in?!

Uponreflection · 28/10/2019 18:01

I had this and the hairdresser cut in so many wispy layers I had to go to another hairdresser who cut it like a bowl.

ginghamstarfish · 28/10/2019 18:06

I also gave up with hairdressers a long time ago after yet another crappy cut. Learned from Youtube videos, love my hair now, it's just how I want it!

Daisyboobooboo · 28/10/2019 18:27

In my experience hairdressers don't really get what it is you want and you end up coming out with your hair much shorter than you went in even though you didn't want it any shorter. I stopped going 14 years ago and do it myself in a bob.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 28/10/2019 21:58

This is why I cut my own hair now!

Koshkaloca · 29/10/2019 13:39

I am so lucky, my not just listen to me, but understand my hair type. However, I always make sure to show her what I want in Pinterest, just in case Grin.

morporkia · 29/10/2019 13:58

I’ve been going to same salon for ages. New stylist decided that instead of doing what I actually asked for she would argue With me. For 10 whole minutes. Was only when I actually stood up to leave that she backed down. But the cut she gave me in the end was alright but not as good as I usually get and I won’t be going back. Their loss cos I usually have it coloured and get other treatments (manicure/brow wax etc) 4 or 5 times a year
