Timberlands or Dr Martens?

mincepiesfordays · 21/10/2019 13:15

Hello! I'm looking at buying some boots for my walk to work every day through the winter, but I'm not sure whether to buy Timberlands or Dr Martens. If you have either, are they worth the money? Are they hard to break in? Are they waterproof?

All advice welcomed!

Dr martens definitely. Not sure if this is a concern for you but timberlands are very outdated whereas martens are on trend.

I have Jadon boots and they weren’t hard to break in and keep my feet dry during rain (they are patent though). They aren’t worth the £160 price tag imo, but I bought them anyway because they are very versatile.

confusedmaybe · 21/10/2019 13:26

Dr Martens.

Moominfan · 21/10/2019 13:28

I've got both. In terms of comfort it has to be timberlands.

confusedmaybe · 21/10/2019 13:28

Timberlands are not waterproof. Dr Martens are more comfortable, not too hard to break in if you buy 'made in England' ones, and worth the price tag.

mincepiesfordays · 21/10/2019 13:35

I'm not too worried about what is on trend (sorry S&B!) but I am worried about having dry and warm feet. A fair few of the timbs say they're waterproof, have they not been in your experience @confusedmaybe ? What was the break in experience like @Moominfan ? I've heard that Docs can be tough to break in so I wonder if timberlands are the same?

Thanks all!

I did the same with both. Wore round the house and with thick socks. My timberlands are waterproof but I've had them for a few years. Maybe newer ones aren't waterproof

Ninkaninus · 21/10/2019 13:39

Boots advertised as waterproof will be waterproof (it’s a specific thing which requires a specific construction).

My vote goes to Timberland. Mainly because I don’t like to suffer through the breaking in stage with Docs, and I also prefer the Timberland aesthetic.

Ninkaninus · 21/10/2019 13:40

Not all timberlands are waterproof, but they do specific waterproof styles.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 21/10/2019 13:42

DMs are not too bad to break in - a few pairs of thick socks on, then DMs, then use a hairdryer to heat them as hot as you can stand, and wear them round the house until completely cooled down. Repeat until comfortable.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 21/10/2019 13:43

I've got Timberlands, I wouldn't say they were outdated (the classic sand coloured 6 inch boot at least), they just aren't "having a moment" like Docs are right now. I associate DMs with alternative style so they would never be something I'd consider as they wouldn't suit my style. Pretty sure the classic nubuck timbs are waterproof, so imo it just comes down to which ones you like better?

In terms of breaking in, every time I wear mine for the first time in the season I do get a blister or 2, but I have very sensitive feet. They're fine after that and comfy.

ToastyFingers · 21/10/2019 13:47

Docs all the way here.
I think timberlands look a bit like naff walking boots.

afrikat · 21/10/2019 13:48

DMS all the way

imclaustrophobicdarren · 21/10/2019 13:49

I have black Timberlands and wear with leather leggings. I couldn't deal with having to break a pair of boots in! Specially as they're usually recovering from hellish heals over the weekend!

AliceLittle · 21/10/2019 13:51

Timberlands are more comfortable and are much warmer.

Ninkaninus · 21/10/2019 13:51

Ohhhhhh I want another pair of boots!! I’ve got my eyes on some flat styles for A/W as all the pairs I already have are mid to high heels. And there’s a 20% off just now...

mincepiesfordays · 21/10/2019 13:55

You've got me @ToastyFingers - I really love a walking boot. I have the loveliest pair of steel toe cap safety boots that i would wear everywhere if they weren't a bit heavy! @Ninkaninus it is the 20% off that is really swaying me. And @AliceLittle 's vote for them being the warmer pair!

Haha! Fair enough. Hope your feet are happy whatever you choose :)

Boireannachlaidir · 21/10/2019 14:34

No, no, no please don't choose DMs over Timberlands for walking to work.

Yes DMs are very on trend right now and everyone stylish (or not) has them BUT they're not comfortable as walking boots.

I live rurally and I've been walking a lot in Timberlands and I'd buy them again in a moment. They are so comfortable! Of course check what ones are waterproof as some styles are possibly more for fashion than function.

Janus · 21/10/2019 14:39

I find timberlands so uncomfortable as I have just slightly wider feet (not massive as I’m only a size 4!!) but they squeeze my toes and are so uncomfortable! Luckily the pair I bought last year had massive bubbles appear in the soles so I could take them back! Currently wearing daughters DM Chelsea boot type things with fleece lining and they are lush!! So easy to get on too which timblerlands were a pita!

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 21/10/2019 15:32

DMs for sure, I’ve just bought a pair of the soft leather ones which haven’t needed any breaking in, wore with a dress and tights to a full day out, no pain. Also wore them yesterday while we went to a country park, toasty warm feet and no pain in the slightest.

I’ve had patent DMs before and they were atrocious to break in, I gave up in the end as I couldn’t stand the blisters.

perkele · 21/10/2019 16:22

I haven't had Timberlands or Doc Martens for years now but I'm hankering after a pair of Docs. Sorel boots are waterproof. And warm. A revelation to me after many winters of watching various boys' sporting activities with freezing, soggy feet.

Mrsboombastic99 · 22/10/2019 13:30

I've got a pair of slim timberlands and they are sooo comfortable, I can walk around in them all day. Most shoes rub my feet at first but they didn't. They are waterproof and I wore them last year when walking the dog in the snow. I didn't get cold feet and the soles aren't slippy. Dr martens are on trend at the moment but I've heard people say that they can take a long time to break in and that the soles can be slippery.

Ninkaninus · 22/10/2019 13:36

I really do love all of my timberlands. It’s my favourite brand for smart/casual as I can dress up or dress down quite easily. @mincepiesfordays did you buy some boots yet?

mincepiesfordays · 22/10/2019 13:40

I haven't yet @Ninkaninus ! But the 20% off ends tonight so I need to make a choice sharpish... I am really taken with waterproof black timberlands though. They just look cosier!
