What never goes out of fashion?

Are there styles or items that you think never go out of fashion?
That are timeless? At least for the time being?

I see plenty threads decrying skinny jeans, that they’re dated, etc.

But then I still get catalogues in the post from various brands and skinnies seem to be the underlying basis of everything.

Is it just city trends that alter? Or do you think the entire silhouette has actually changed for good?

make you mind up.

Straight leg jeans never go out of fashion? In fact they are more in right now, turned up.

Classic while shirt, black dress, slim leg trouser.

Don't buy the fashion versions of anything- eg flared sleeves or cold shoulder, or frills where they aren't needed like on the waist.

Skinny jeans being branded as last season confuses me 1. Because I love them and 2. Because they are still everywhere. Unless for a night out, which is kind of a no no depending on the style etc.

But I think a LBD will stay a classic.

Floisme · 19/10/2019 22:54

I think everything goes out of fashion. 'Timeless! to me means something that keeps on coming back and only needs a couple of tweaks to look fresh again. But it will still have longish spells off the radar.

Floisme · 19/10/2019 22:56

Even with a white shirt , the fit, collar, cuffs etc come in and out of fashion. You can spot a white shirt from the 70s a mile off. Same with knitwear.

Craftycorvid · 19/10/2019 22:57

Oh, the usual suspects! Good cashmere in simple styles, Burberry trench coat, classic navy blazer, brogues. None has to look in any way staid either, as they go well with more ‘high fashion’ pieces.

Black. Especially tops that can be worn under something or on top as time moves on. Scoop neck or polo neck, especially cotton and lightweight.

Everything else comes and goes.

Cashmere

JaceLancs · 19/10/2019 23:12

Slim black trousers
Leather biker
Plain colour and style cashmere or merino
Little black dress

chesterdraws1 · 19/10/2019 23:14

Being slim

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 19/10/2019 23:18

Leather biker jackets

TrainspottingWelsh · 19/10/2019 23:18

Docs
Biker jackets
Black tailored trousers
Little black dress
Ripped jeans and vintage t-shirts with rock/ metal band logos

(The last might be more me than universal but tbf there's never been an era they are unfashionable)

Biancadelrioisback · 19/10/2019 23:19

I will continue to wear skinny jeans as they make me feel good. I wear them 7 days a week (black ones for the office) and I love them. Look good in summer, look good in winter.

QuimJongUn · 20/10/2019 07:21

A good bag in a classic style (Chanel flap, Mulberry Bayswater, Hermes Birkin etc, or quality high street takes on similar styles)
Trenchcoats
Docs
LBDs
Diamond stud or gold hoop earrings
Leather bike jacket

But the thing that never dates imo is dressing to express your own personal style and not following the herd.

camelfinger · 20/10/2019 07:38

Most of the items listed above weren’t in fashion in the 90s (except DMs; I got rid of mine in the late 90s). A LBD from the 90s would look dated now. I think the silhouette is different now: there is less of a difference between older people’s clothes and younger people’s clothes.

wherestheotherone · 20/10/2019 07:43

Basic tailoring, good fabric, no patterns.

Keep it simple and stay clear of details. It's the details that age.

AuntieStella · 20/10/2019 07:45

Clothes which are not exaggerated in cut, colour or details. And which in general follow the form of the body.

So skinnies or narrow trousers or straight legs; well-cut shirts in basic shapes (no weird sleeves, cut out panels or voluminous bits) , a good jacket - probably blazer shaped; dresses which skim and flatter. Then the weird little rules like see-through and shiny items at night only, underwear is not outerwear etc

AndromedaPerseus · 20/10/2019 21:04

Things I’ve had in my wardrobe for 10+ years:
Denim jacket
Tan knee high boots
Tweed jacket
Black wrapover jersey dress
Black ballet pumps

Idontneeditatall · 20/10/2019 21:08

Agree with flo that everything needs a tweak to stay around. I look at wardrobe icons who claim to sell you things that never go out of fashion but almost everything they show looks quite “now”. The only thing I can think of that hasn’t changed much is a trench coat. Trousers always change in the cut. Shoes and boots always change

Idontneeditatall · 20/10/2019 21:10

Skinnies certainly aren’t timeless. I remember when most people felt strange in them when they first came in about 15 years ago. And yes I know they’d been around in the 80’s but people didn’t wear them in decades. No one would have worn skinnies in the 90’s

Bouledeneige · 20/10/2019 21:12

Manners.... Oh sorry....

managedmis · 20/10/2019 21:14

Black leather ankle boots
Black roll neck
Tight black jeans

NightsOfCabiria · 20/10/2019 21:22

Anything which skims the body in a neutral colour.

Nothing too ‘out there’ or ‘of the moment’ so;

Black turtle neck
Ivory turtle neck
Camel trench
Black cigarette trousers
White shirt
White t-shirt
Plain black dress which suits your figure

Nothing exagerated.

MoltoAgitato · 20/10/2019 21:31

Comfy pants.

evilharpy · 20/10/2019 21:36

Doc Martens. They haven't changed since my first pair in the 90s.
