What never goes out of fashion?

Are there styles or items that you think never go out of fashion?
That are timeless? At least for the time being?

I see plenty threads decrying skinny jeans, that they’re dated, etc.

But then I still get catalogues in the post from various brands and skinnies seem to be the underlying basis of everything.

Is it just city trends that alter? Or do you think the entire silhouette has actually changed for good?

See I don’t think docs are timeless. Sure they haven’t changed but they have gone in and out of fashion. They’re having a real moment again now but 10 years ago not many people were wearing them. There’s always been a hardcore of people who love docs but they’ve often been quite niche. Right now everyone’s wearing them and they’re very fashionable but I doubt they will be in another 10 years as the moment will have passed.

TrainspottingWelsh · 20/10/2019 22:04

I'll still be wearing docs when I'm 90. I've always had them since I was about 10.

They might not always be the current trend, but like biker jackets they'll never be unfashionable. It isn't like wearing hideous wedge platforms when they're out of fashion. And even when they are just popular with the niche market, it's alternative enough to still be fashionable.

championquartz · 20/10/2019 22:09

I think nothing stays ‘in fashion’ forever.
Not even a ‘classic’ cashmere sweater - the shape, length, something in its design will change.

I do agree with PP chester, being slim is always in fashion.

Leflic · 20/10/2019 23:03

Agree with the being slim.
Cashmere is only timeless because in general the jumpers tend to be very plain and not actually fashionable. Cotton and thin wool basics are the same ( synthetic material dates I think).

I have never worn heels, so I know how shoes “ revolve”. It was Converse in the 80’s, clumpy shoes and boots in the early 90’s ( including dm’s), trainers late 90’s ,2000’s and back to Converse. We are now on clumpy shoes again.

Black skinny denim fell did fall out of fashion when baggy cargos and then trousers took over. Denim in any form was too much a reminder of the previous era. And then skinnies came back to smarten us all back again.

We haven’t had a proper recession for a while so interesting to see if “ hemlines drop” after Brexit as folklore has it.

Floisme · 20/10/2019 23:32

I remember a thread on timeless fashion a couple of years ago and I think the only thing we agreed on was trainers. But that was before they became A Thing so I imagine their days are numbered now.

Biker jackets disappeared for a while too - it was all leather blazers. (I can see them coming back soon - I've been looking for one).

OhTheRoses · 20/10/2019 23:42

Burberry raincoat
Cashmere roll neck

For men Church's lace ups.

Diamonds

DontCallMeShitley · 21/10/2019 00:10

Sheepskin flying jacket, classic style with edged pockets at the front
LBD
DMs
Blazer (hate them but they are classic)
Cashmere jumpers and cardigans
Chanel Classic Flap bag or similar
Ballet pumps

Biker jackets seem to change style/length quite a bit

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/10/2019 01:09

I think there are items which are “classics”, and they tend to be “wardrobe staples” for a lot of people, but I agree with pp that they will be tweaked slightly from year to year. For example, I wear a lot of plain crew-neck jumpers, but now waists on trousers are higher, I like the jumpers to be a shorter, almost cropped length, so they sit on the waistband of the trousers. Even if you think on skinny jeans, my first pair were almost hipster waist, and full length, worn wrinkled at the ankle. The last pair I bought were a high-waist, and ankle-grazer length.

That said, I have been buying the same skinny-rib black polo neck jumper from M&S every few years forever. I wear it until it’s practically falling apart, then buy a new identical one. I wouldn’t say it’s fashion, it just works for me and what I wear. I think I remember my gran having it in cream, 25 years ago! This is the only example of a never-dating item I can think of.

minesagin37 · 21/10/2019 01:48

Burberry is the label of chavs in Leeds. Definitely not a timeless fashion item here!

PatricksRum · 21/10/2019 01:49

Woolly tights!

OhTheRoses · 21/10/2019 04:20

I see the point about Burberry. But a classic trench I don't think is chavvy. I bought mine in 1984 and still wear it occasionally.

Downunderduchess · 21/10/2019 05:31

Dressing to showcase your own personality & style, not hopelessly following trends.

Bobthefishermanswife · 21/10/2019 05:40

LBD
Demin jackets

I disagree with pp saying that a LBD from the 90s would look dated as the dress was/is my mum's (long term borrow) it's a 90s Morgan dress, fitted top, empire line waist with a flared skirt. A cut that suits my shape.

The jacket is 30+ years old.

Teacher22 · 21/10/2019 06:06

A slim outline.
Natural fabrics.
Good cut.
Plain and elegant styles.
Well cut hair.

Palaver1 · 21/10/2019 07:02

Good smile nice kept teeth

Bluesheep8 · 21/10/2019 07:15

Denim jacket
Denim shirt

Elodie2019 · 21/10/2019 07:35

No one would have worn skinnies in the 90’s

Everyone wore leggings though.
University fashion 90-95 -Levi jeans or leggings. Timeless!

ChickenyChick · 21/10/2019 07:38

Camel coat (Long belted wool coat) also the trench coat

Never on trend, as such, but a classic imo

Leflic · 21/10/2019 07:40

What’s interesting is the concept of fashionable. Women’s clothes were so restricted before the 60’s.
I wonder if the endless consumer cycle of buying will change with a more eco friendly approach? Looking fashionable will be seen as very crass and the cool kids will all wear anti fashion. Maybe it’s happening already. Young people now look pretty identical.

ChickenyChick · 21/10/2019 07:50

Nah. Cool kids are all about branded stuff

Idontneeditatall · 21/10/2019 08:09

That’s interesting elodie I was at uni in Manchester in the 90’s and don’t remember anyone wearing leggings at all. I remember a silhouette of looser bottoms and tighter tops. So bootleg or flared or wide jeans or combats. Maybe for clubbing some flared leggings but never a skinny Shape on the bottom half

Everything dates because it's all in the detail. I'm all for quality but "timeless classic" "investment dressing" is complete nonsense.

trendingsomewhere · 21/10/2019 15:46

Cashmere / Wool Polo-necks.
Chelsea boots
Denim jackets

ZaZathecat · 21/10/2019 18:26

As far as I can remember (and that's a long way back!), the trenchcoat has always been in fashion for Spring and Autumn.
