Why do so many female celebrities wear strappy sandals?

At most red carpet events and other public photo events, so many female celebrities wear strappy sandals. They rarely have nice feet (let's face it who does! feet are not nice generally) and I think it usually spoils a look that would have been super elegant with a nice court shoe heel.

It's so prevalent that I'm assuming that it must be something that men find attractive otherwise it wouldn't be so popular for women at these kind of styled events. What is it? Is it that bare feet are vulnerable? Does this overcome the site of a few buninions or veins or bad tattoos?

Jennifer Aniston is a good example of this and her feet aren't actually that bad. In almost all of these pictures, the look would be much more elegant without the sandals and more concealed feet.

Do men really like this look? I don't get it at all.

Once I saw the title I thought Jennifer Aniston because she's known to wear them everytime.

Anyway, I noticed twice you referred to men liking or not liking it, are you assuming they all wear it because of men? Could it be it's what the "designers" and stylists have marketed/advised them to wear and they also think it looks nice?

DameSquashalot · 15/10/2019 13:50

I really like the wedges. The top sandals look incredibly uncomfortable.

I don't think court shoes would look nicer. Each to their own I guess. Strappy shoes IMO look nicer in the evening.

Personally I prefer a strappy shoe with an evening gown - I think of them as more elegant than a closed toe court shoe. I wouldn't ever wear a closed shoe to a black tie event for instance. I like showing off a nice pedi.

I was specifically talking about younger female celebrities because generally they are styled to be attractive/sexy as a big part of their market is sexual attractiveness. It's why they wear low cut dresses! It's a bit daft and naive to pretend it's just about looking "nice" in the abstract; there is a big sexual element in it too. It's called show business for a reason - it's a business. Marketing via sexuality is a big part of that.

Personally I don't think they look nice at all - which is why I was asking.

But how is showing off feet elegant? Unless you are a foot model, most feet are really quite unpleasant. Even foot models feet aren't that great!

Oops! Since you didn't mention younger celebs in your OP and did mention Jennifer Aniston, I was under the impression we were on about celebs her age.
Sorry. I'll take my daft and naive self elsewhere then. Apparently I have no idea how show business and marketing works.

prampushingdownthehighst · 15/10/2019 14:04

I think a closed toe court shoe would look ridiculous with an evening gown

whitershadeofpale · 15/10/2019 14:14

As with quite a lot of fashions (fake tan, white wedding dresses etc) the origins of their popularity are in showing off wealth rather than appealing to men. Strappy sandals or open toed shoes in general show that you’re rich enough to be able to afford impractical shoes and don’t need to be on your feet for long.

IMO they look nice with certain evening outfits whereas courts don’t.

TigerJoy · 15/10/2019 14:20

Reese Witherspoon rarely wears anything else on the red carpet

I always thought they draw the eye less and you focus on the dress

Maybe they're also easier to wear without breaking in or having a perfect fit - how many times will those shoes be worn? Once, probably

Snipples · 15/10/2019 14:21

I think strait shoes are elegant as they tend to be quite delicate, often with embellished straps or chains which I think looks good and as I say, they show off a nice pedi which always looks very groomed.

Also for me, because I regularly wear court shoes to work I wouldn't associate them with dressing up. Whereas open toed shoes I absolutely would.

Fair enough it's not your cup of tea but plenty of women do like them. I couldn't care less whether men find them attractive or not.

Snipples · 15/10/2019 14:22

Strait = strappy btw

tisonlymeagain · 15/10/2019 14:23

I think stroppy sandals also help to elongate the legs.

NumberblockNo1 · 15/10/2019 14:24

I dont like the look of open toed shoes or sandals either!

Gingerkittykat · 15/10/2019 14:36

I'm in awe she can stand up in those sandals.

I guess people wear the because they are fashionable, not a look I like myself but then I'm sure they don't like my sensible shoes.

Ohyesiam · 15/10/2019 14:41

Try to wrap your head around other people having different taste/opinions to you.
I would consider your distaste for feet to be quite unusual.

NumberblockNo1 · 15/10/2019 14:43

Its not a fashion for men to show their feet is it, or walk in heels that are tricky to walk in. Ive always objected on those basis as well as not particularly finding it attractive!

sugarbum · 15/10/2019 14:48

I think strappy sandals look beautiful. And I have very nice feet thanks. The rest of me isn't so hot though Grin They're invariably ill fitting or too high or with too thin straps though, which does make an unpretty foot look even less pretty.

Felina · 15/10/2019 15:20

Scrappy shoes / sandals are fashionable at the moment.

LadyGAgain · 15/10/2019 15:22

I can't wear a court shoe. My feet are like hobbits and so I need an open toe shoe. They aren't ugly feet (just hobbit shaped!) and open toe for me is much more tolerable comfort wise.

HerRoyalNotness · 15/10/2019 15:24

I like them and they fit ther occasion. I can’t wear them, my feet swell up and they’re painful Sad. Shoes always let my outfit down

Idontneeditatall · 15/10/2019 16:43

Closed toe shoes don’t look right with evening wear at all imo

Sallygoround631 · 15/10/2019 16:54

I don’t think women, young or old, wear low cut dresses and scrappy shoes just to be sexually alluring to men.
Many women like those items because they think it suits them, or to impress generally, or because they simply like it.
Sometimes a woman wishes to attract sexual attention, but this is not a given.

Sallygoround631 · 15/10/2019 16:55

Even strappy shoes 😆
Oh FU ipad spell-end.

Ravenrob · 16/10/2019 16:55

I like them. I find they're more cushioned and easier to wear. I don't care what men think of them Grin

MoltonSilver · 16/10/2019 17:11

Women don't dress for men. Women dress themselves and for other women. The chances of a man complimenting your shoes aren't high.
