Hi. Please help. Looking for a wedding outfit for my mother. Does this look ok?

I'm a bit younger but my DD got married this summer and I found a lovely dress in Hobbs. The MOTG also had a Hobbs dress. Although the sales have finished and the summer stuff has gone you might find some in the Outlet shops if there's one near you.

LookingForward2020 · 13/10/2019 08:15

Fluffy, I really like that Bombshell outfit! It’s a pity it’s out of stock.

The floral JL looks a bit better than too casual for me. She is a formal person.

Wedding is abroad this December so I don’t have much time. I am looking at the rest of the suggestions. Keep them coming please.

Should have mentioned, mother is abroad so going with her is not an option.

Has she given you ideas about what she would like?

QuaterMiss · 13/10/2019 08:21

Perhaps you’d be better off starting again with all the the specific details in your opening post?

LookingForward2020 · 13/10/2019 08:25

Sorry can’t post a photo of her.

I think light colours (so no navy or brown for a example) suit her best. She top heavy (large bust). I think a light long jacket with dress would suit her. Think Carole Middleton wedding outfit but longer length.

LookingForward2020 glad you liked the dress, check the rest of the site for the dress in different colours. If you email them, they might have a date for when it comes back in stock.

If you're marrying abroad then check the bridal mags & shops online over there for occasion dresses. They'll have the right style and fabric choice for the temperature of that country. Look at what the locals wear to weddings over there rather than buying a standard UK MOTB dress.

FluffyAlpaca19 · 13/10/2019 08:41

That Bombshell dress in different colours:

GeoffreyAndBungle · 13/10/2019 08:56

Can you take her somewhere like John Lewis or Debenhams for a trying on session, they have so many nice dresses.

GlamGiraffe · 13/10/2019 08:57

I personally think it's nice for a MOTB. Lots want to feel they can stand out as easily identifiable as they feel it's a special day for them almost as much as the B&G do. For people who arent good at putting things together it's as good idea to go for a read made set, and whilst I understand people are saying its too formal, it's not necessarily so. Weddings have in some cases become very casual which is a shame,, this doesnt stop your mum going stand out.
The only thing which concerns me is whether ot would look great on a fuller lady, especially in that colour.
Do you have any shops nearby where she could book in with a personal shopper? Maybe John Lewis or similar. Might be the way yo go.

GeoffreyAndBungle · 13/10/2019 08:58

Sorry, problems loading the thread, just seen that mother is abroad!

Aprilcherry04 · 13/10/2019 08:59

MMUUMMY where is that dress from? It is exactly what my friend wants for her daughters wedding and we cant find one anywhere!

doodlejump1980 · 13/10/2019 09:03

My Mum got her MOTB outfit at
www.jacques-vert.co.uk/ And she looked proper lovely.

AliciaQuays · 13/10/2019 09:06

fuck off with Jacques bloody vert
where style goes to die

Wilmalovescake · 13/10/2019 09:08

I think your original outfit was much nicer than half the suggestions here! Only you know your wedding style, and your Mum’s style. If you both like the grey lace one go for it.

doodlejump1980 · 13/10/2019 09:23

@AliciaQuays no need for that. My Mum looked lovely in her outfit.

Mumski45 · 13/10/2019 09:45

Watching with interest as I will be MOTB in November next year. @TerpsichoreanMuse I love that seagrass dress.

Will start my own thread nearer the time once DD has chosen her dress as you lot are giving fab advice.

Boireannachlaidir · 13/10/2019 09:52

^*But Adore the point being made (by me and others) is that the idea of a specific genre of Mother of the Bride clothing (aimed at some mythical late middle aged crone with zero taste or sense of individual style) is deeply outdated and insulting.

Women of 60 (and of course a MOTB could be any age that’s a generation older than her daughter) are doctors, barristers, guitarists, astrophysicists, opera singers, dog walkers, sculptors, writers, shop assistants - not one isolated group at whom to throw colourless polyester because they don’t know any better.*^

Well said @QuaterMiss

What a deeply depressing & outdated thread this is, sorry OP to say that but had your mother no choice or confidence or individual style of her own to want to choose her own outfit? I'd imagine she'll be pretty uncomfortable in that dress style as it's not suited to an 18/20 size really.

This whole MOTB "genre" and ideas posted are all pretty ghastly - overpriced, generic, nasty fabrics in muted colours and naff cuts seem to be de rigour for these poor MOTBs.

What about FOTBs? Do their outfits get chosen for them too?

LookingForward2020 · 13/10/2019 10:02

@Boireannachlaidir while you raise interesting points I am not really interested in the politics or such discussions at this moment in time. I am sorry you find the thread depressing. That must be awful for you.

My mother has asked me to bring her an outfit to wear for the wedding. Something nice, she said. I came onto MN to ask for opinions on the outfit I posted and to ask for additional ideas. I have no idea what my father will be wearing. He hasn’t asked me to look for an outfit for him.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I am looking at them all.

I wore a DVF fitted dress that was 3/4 sleeve and the fabric was the same grey as the men's suits . Accessories were same Tiffany blue as the chaps cravats . At the time I thought ( and my daughter thought) m it was great to look so matchy matchy with my husband and the other wedding party. But in hindsight, I'd have loved to go in a colourful dress that was more me ! The MOTG wore a purple dress and didn't match anything but she looked amazing.

EdWinchester · 13/10/2019 10:17

I think the JD Williams dress would look pretty awful on someone size 18/20 plus polyester!

Ditto anything from jacques vert.

NaturalBornWoman · 13/10/2019 10:24

My mother has asked me to bring her an outfit to wear for the wedding. Something nice, she said.

Then you say she's an 18/20 so how will you be sure it will fit if you're taking it with you? Especially if it's a fitted style. Aren't there any shops where she lives?

Boireannachlaidir · 13/10/2019 10:32

@LookingForward2020 - I didn't mean to derail your thread (& in case I wasn't clear, its not awful for me as much as women in general - worldwide - hence the rhetorical question about FOTB "outfits". I wasn't expecting you to be looking for one of those too). Best of luck with your search.

LookingForward2020 · 13/10/2019 10:32

She has given me her measurements.

More style suggestions welcome. Thanks!
