Does anyone else have a complete ban on character clothing and accessories?

Or would you buy items like umbrellas, bags, towels, hats, sunglasses, gloves, scarves, pants, vests, socks, pjs, dressing gown, swimwear, raincoats, puddlesuits, wellies, slippers etc with tv characters on?

I hate it. My kids love it so they have it. You're only a kid once.

I love it! On the kids AND on me. That Harry Potter range at Boden is gorgeous.

I'm currently wearing Harry Potter socks and pyjamas and a bambi hoodie. I'm 31 Grin

Loving all the Hyacinth Buckets desperate not to be seen as common.

My four-year-old has an Elsa top, a Peppa dress and Tinkerbell knickers because they make her happy. I’ll hand back my middle-class badge now, shall I?

How is it all Hyacinth Bucket to not like character clothing?

I also don't like neon or metallic swimwear. Is disliking that type of clothing also Hyacinth? What about thinking the platform trainers look silly? What's an acceptable item of clothing to have a personal preference on?

Nope I wouldn’t. I don’t even know why.

Maybe, just maybe when they go into reception and up until about year 2/3 they can have a lunch bag with a character on. That’s as far as I can stretch

I dont like them but Im not mean enough to ban my kids from them ! I wouldnt go out of my way to but them but its a bit sad when a Parent refuses sns a child likes them.

We had gruffalo when small and Nasa and Harry Potter bits now.

Yeah, I am far from a Boden lover but character stuff is usually eye-bleedingly bright. Most of the character tops we were given as hand me downs are now in the pyjama drawer, along with anything with cheesy slogans. Underwear, pj sets, lunchboxes etc, all fine with me.

Ironically I have some Nintendo stuff in my own wardrobe Grin

I've never heard of anyone having a problem with it until this thread. But then mumsnet really is a different world sometimes.

I agree re different world, I live in a decent enough area, nice school with lovely families... 99% of the kids have character bags/lunchboxes and regularly see the nursery children in character clothes. I honestly hadn’t heard of this ‘simply no character clothing or items outside of the house!’ attitude other than on mumsnet

I'm definitely not a Hyacinth Bucket type but I really hate it. I remember the cringe I felt wearing second hand jeans in the 80's that had Kylie Minogue on them. Peak 80's Kylie with crimped hair, big plastic earrings and one of those velvet hat things that her hair came out of.

My DD is still tiny but it's not a hill I'm prepared to die on. If she wants to wear shitty character clothes when she's older then I'm happy for her to do so. I think I'll reserve my clothing vetoes for when she's a teen Wink

I wouldn't buy anything expensive like a coat, but I don't mind it on tee-shirts, pants, and pjs.
DS also had some avengers trainers from Clarks, but they were really subtle.

I don't have a problem with it, although I'm not keen on some of the colours (especially Frozen character clothing - very cold-looking on pale kids IMO). Most children outgrow wearing characters at around 7 or 8, so its a short-lived thing, and if they like it, why not?

There are certain tribes who wouldn't be seen with a Peppa Pig clothed child though, but rather than basic block colours, their children seem to be in Maxmorra, Frugi and Hatley which I find just as garish.

Some of these replies come across as really snooty!
I personally wouldn't wear anything with a character or slogan on it and tend not to wear anything branded with logos but certainly wouldn't judge anyone who did.
I think its a bit sad that children don't get to wear things that make them happy.

Fine to have personal preferences but why foist them on your child when the child starts expressing their own preference? If you don’t want your children seen outside the house in character clothing, surely it must be because you worry about what other people will think.

Something brings your kid joy. But you’re too far up your own fecking ass to let them enjoy it as they might want to

For children absolutely yes. It makes buying a child something basic like PJs into something they will really like - useful if you haven't got much money as they are happy to have clothing and stationery items as gifts if they've got the child's favourite character on.

For myself? No, never. Can't comprehend why a grown woman would want to wear something with a cartoon character on, or even worse 'Harry Potter'. Just no.

I couldn't have cared less about this. I think middle class people shrug over this in Ireland. But in London (?) it seems to be like throwing your family tree in to the ring and allowing strangers to curl their upper lip at your Uncle Gary. I remember when I lived in London, lots of people I knew had a ban on McDonalds and I privately thought, how completely pointless - unless you're never, ever going to allow your child to have a burger or fries or coke.

Nope. Can't do it. DD has a few Beauty and the Beast pjs but thats it. I can't take the frilly fru fru frills or the glitter. But I don't like the mundane, muted clothes either.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/10/2019 21:57

Those people who only allow pyjamas, or underwear, why is that?
My guess is that you care more about what other people think rather than making your child happy, and that is sad.

Mumsnet: as snobby as usual. What kind of parents ban their young children from wearing clothes with characters on it? Children love that sort of stuff, let them be happy while they are young ffs
