Cartier tank solo

Pilchardsky · 06/10/2019 23:49

Anyone have one? I prefer a leather strap usually but Cartier's own website says to expect to replace it every 12 months and at c£200 a pop the braclet strap becomes more attractive.

To preempt the inevitable comments: yes I know it has a huge price tag, no I don't need it, yes I know Cartier isn't a 'proper' watchmaker, yes I can afford it, yes I'm aware I could give the money to charity instead.

Yes. I have a steel version with a steel bracelet. I don’t have one with a leather strap so cannot comment.

If you like Cartier, you might like Jaeger Le Coultre. They are “proper” watches! I have a Reverso.

ColdCottage · 06/10/2019 23:58

I've always wanted a Cartier mini tank (just two links wide). Wish I'd bought one when I first saw one in 2002 circa £3k last time I looked around 8 years ago they were closer to £10k.

ColdCottage · 06/10/2019 23:59

Not that I could have bought one in 2002 as I was a student 😂

BunchMunch · 07/10/2019 00:03

Have you looked at the Calatrava by Patek?
Fabulous classic watch, I inherited my aunt's one in yellow gold (I never wear it as I prefer white gold.)

MrsFrTedCrilly · 07/10/2019 00:11

My DH gave me one as a 40th birthday present. It’s stainless steel quite pretty and not big and clunky. I was left very unimpressed by our local jewellers service when it stopped working on my birthday and had to complain directly to Cartier before it was repaired and serviced.
Leather straps never last for me beyond a year so if you intend to wear the watch daily I’d go for the bracelet option.

Pilchardsky · 07/10/2019 00:16

Wow, Jaeger Le Coultre = very nice! About twice my budget though. I'm not really interested in alternatives, have my heart set on a Cartier for some unfathomable reason.

Yes I do. I got it with the learner strap. Have worn every day for 18 months and no signs of wear and tear. It's a beautiful watch and is my favourite thing I own. Get it, you won't regret it!

Canters15 · 07/10/2019 01:00

Leather strap, not learner strap! 😂

Pilchardsky · 07/10/2019 09:45

I think I'll try the braclet strap to see how it fits then can always get leather if I'm between sizes. Trying to determine whether I ought to wait for a special occasion to treat myself or just take the plunge.

Why can't I spell bracelet properly?

Wear it & enjoy it. Are you sure you couldn't be tempted to a Rolex Datejust?

HarrietBasset · 07/10/2019 10:42

I have a cartier tank with the bracelet and love it. Had it a few years now (was a push present when i had my twins Wink) and never take it off. Treat yourself

Pilchardsky · 07/10/2019 10:51

Is there any reason to buy direct from Cartier rather than a jewellers?

OP posts:
Bloomburger · 07/10/2019 11:24

I have one. Love it. Most of my friends have Rolexes so it's nice to have something different. The Omega Seamaster is lovely. That's next of my coveted thing list.

Imonlymoominafterall · 07/10/2019 11:28

The leather straps are closer to £300 plus now - I'd avoid them (have to replace mine every 2years). Buy direct from Cartier to avoid very convincing fakes which look identical but don't have a Cartier movement so Cartier won't touch them afterwards. Also avoid engraving if you ever want to sell on.

Pilchardsky · 08/10/2019 13:45

Went to try it on today but they didn't have any in stock.

Buy from Cartier, such a great shop experience.

BubblesBuddy · 15/10/2019 16:56

I’m a watch freak! I have a Rolex Datejust. They do need to be serviced and they are automatics, not battery. I have an Omega Seamaster from the 1980s. I have not worn it for ages! I need to. It has an interchangeable strap.

I would love a Patek Philippe! If anyone is ever in Geneva, go to their museum. It’s amazing for any watch lover. Well amazing full stop!

BubblesBuddy · 15/10/2019 16:57

What about Harrods or Selfridges?

Cheesymonster · 15/10/2019 17:04

Bloomburger I wear an Omega Seamaster which belonged to my late Dad. He had it since the late 60s when he was in the army. I wear it to feel closer to him as he passed away very recently. I don't know anything about watches but my mum said to take extra care of it as it's a good watch (I would anyway because of the sentiment of it).

TSSDNCOP · 15/10/2019 19:37

I have a large one on a steel bracelet. It was instead of an eternity ring. It looks class whether you wear it with a bikini or a ball gown.

Paddingtonthebear · 15/10/2019 19:41

I tried the Cartier tank solo but didn’t end up getting one. It just didn’t look or feel right on me. Got an Omega seamaster Aqua Terra instead

PalindromicUser · 15/10/2019 19:43

I would dispute that Cartier isn’t a proper watchmaker, they have a pretty long history of making timepieces!

What does the tank solo cost? I have an entry level Jaeger-LeCoultre WHICH I LOVE and I’d be surprised if it really did cost twice a Cartier price.

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 15/10/2019 19:57

If you offer to pay in cash you might be able to get the watch cheaper (saves the jewellers credit card charges).

mrscampbellblackagain · 15/10/2019 20:00

Cartier are lovely watches. I have a patek now but they are very expensive and not really comparable.
