What can I use to style my 13-month-old's hair?

My son has fine, straight hair that is now long enough to get in his eyes. I want to sweep it to one side rather than cut it, and have been looking into styling products suitable for babies/toddlers that will hold it in place. The only one I've seen in the shop is the Cantu hair custard which says it's for textured hair so would be (presumably) unsuitable.

I'm a bit clueless when it comes to hair products in general so any advice or recommendations would be appreciated!

It's not really the norm to style a child's hair of this age and to use product on it. Why not cut it if it's getting in his eyes? An infant with styled hair is going to look fairly ridiculous

NannyR · 02/10/2019 12:30

What about hair ties or clips?

Teddybear45 · 02/10/2019 12:31

Just cut it or clip it up.

MarshaBradyo · 02/10/2019 12:32

I have a dd and use clips, I couldn’t imagine any product that would work other than to make hair stiff

Spied · 02/10/2019 12:33

I'd cut it. Preferable

30to50FeralHogs · 02/10/2019 12:34

Superglue?!

Unless you use industrial quantities of product to slap it down, it’s going to keep falling in his eyes. Why not just give him a haircut so that it’s practical and when he’s older he can decide if he wants to style it?

Kids with thick hair that can be pushed back when it grows longer can manage it. If his is fine and straight it’s just going to get in the way.

Spied · 02/10/2019 12:34

to having to get him to keep still to style etc.
I also think any kind of hair product used in small amounts would be suitable for any hair.

eddiemairswife · 02/10/2019 12:35

Cut it???

DuckPie · 02/10/2019 12:36

I have a toddler whose hair is like this. It's long but he likes it that way but we want to grow the fringe out. With girls, it's easy to use clips but he is less keen on this (despite not wanting it cut). We grip it when wet to help it dry to one side and I've used hairspray to hold it. Not the norm to use hairspray on a small boy but it's short term til it grows long enough to tuck back and does no harm

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 02/10/2019 12:37

Hair clip or bandana.

Chocolateteabag · 02/10/2019 12:37

You will struggle to find a hair styling product marketed as "safe for children" - if he rubs his hair, then his eyes it's going to sting! And you'll have no come back to the manufacturer. Is it really worth the risk?

Clips or a thin black stretchy hairband like the footballers wear?

Ginfordinner · 02/10/2019 12:40

Is this real?
He's 13 months old, not a 20 something male model!

Just cut it. Please don't use hair clips on a baby. It isn't very safe.

user1573354 · 02/10/2019 12:41

I use very large clips (so they can't swallow them) and thin hair bands in my DS hair, it only takes a few months of pineapple head bobbles until it's long enough to put behind their ears is gather all their hair into a bobble.

inwood · 02/10/2019 12:42

Cut it!

Klouise777 · 02/10/2019 12:47

My worry would he especially with a child this age that they are always sticking their hands in their mouths and more so when teething. He's going to be running his hair and then in his mouth. I'd cut it!! My 18 month old is always on the go and gets very hot so we keep is short, out the way and absolutely practical!! You've got plenty of time to style hair when they are old enough to decide

homemadecommunistrussia · 02/10/2019 12:47

Pirate type bandana?

ElderMcKinley · 02/10/2019 12:57

Please don't think I want anything other that the tiniest bit of...whatever it is I'd need...to keep it to one side and out of his eyes. A master hair stylist I am not! But it's a good point about the product getting into his eyes / him eating it, that's why I didn't want to use anything other than something specially formulated for young children. I assumed if Cantu had one for textured hair then there must be a similar one for straight hair.

I tried a hairclip yesterday but he has such fine hair they fall out! And I'd be worried about him eating them.

Like the bandana idea, I might give that a go. Or cut it, as a last resort - I mainly wanted to avoid that because I don't know if he can be trusted to sit still that long!

Cut it when he's asleep.

ElderMcKinley · 02/10/2019 13:05

It may come to that, if I can trust him to stay asleep. And if he didn't like to sleep with his face planted firmly into the mattress! Although I cut my daughter's hair when she was a similar age and it looked pretty awful, so maybe I'll find a hairdresser that does night calls...

Thank you, everyone, for the suggestions. Off to google baby-friendly super glue. Grin

I clipped my sons in place and then I also used to blow dry it into a shape

Mintypea5 · 02/10/2019 13:10

Do you have any hairdressers that specialise in children near you? We have a salon in our city purely for kids. It's great! They can handle any situation especially kids who won't sit still.

Special seats to get the cut in and also they put a dvd on to keep them distracted

homemadecommunistrussia · 02/10/2019 21:03

When mine were little I used bribery- mini milks worked well Grin

Meowandchoppychops · 02/10/2019 21:17

I have used cantu on my curly hair and it's a mixture of textures. It's a great hold but doubt even if you used a lot to get a good cast it I doubt it would keep it out of his eyes. Don't know any child friendly products that would do any better to be honest.
Could try blow drying it to one side (on a cool setting) should help as it will help it sit in the right spot, that is if he'll let you (found a game/bit of TV on my phone does he trick).

Ohyesiam · 02/10/2019 22:39

I use cantu custard to give definition to curls and reduce frizz. I imagine it would swamp fine hair , and it's got no holding properties. My hair still bounces around all over the place and I use a lot in one go. Can I ask why you think it would work in your situation? I’m intrigued to know how Cantu is marketing it!

I would blow dry the fringe.

Elbbob · 02/10/2019 22:48

My DD has very fine hair and I have only recently been able to tie it back as it got long enough when she reached 18mo. I tried clips but they'd just fall out. Anyway a little bit of coconut oil helped to stop it being so wispy and helped it stay a bit more out of her face - until she ran her hands on her hair or rolled around on the floor. So about 20 minutes after I'd done her hair then!
