Is it a case of just using make-up remover on them or is there some other special concoction I've yet to hear of?

OP posts:
munzero · 02/10/2019 21:16

Warm water, anti bacterial hand wash and my hands! Hold them with the bristles pointing down always!

LLUNNON · 02/10/2019 21:17

Hi sweet, just pop them in an old pillowcase.. Tie the end and whallaaa put them on a spin in the machine. Hope that helps x

ReeRi · 02/10/2019 21:18

What about drying them? Any tips?

I tend to just lay them flat along the edge of some drawers. If the heating is on and I know DH won’t mess with them then I’ll put them over the edge of the window sill. I raise the handle end slightly if I can too.

I’ve heard of people hanging them and those brush cleaning tools that spin them are supposed to be good

Do people really put their brushes on the washing machine? This is so new to me! I don’t think you’re supposed to get water in the metal bit if you can avoid it as it can mess with the glue and it must be harder to dry them??

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/10/2019 21:44

I use hand-wash and warm water. Do them on a Saturday or a Sunday depending on what’s happening at the weekend, except my foundation brush which I do on a Wednesday and switch over to a second one. I dry them on the dish rack, or in summer put them on kitchen roll on the garden table.

I think OP meant sponge type things in the washing machine, not brushes.

ViserionTheDragon · 02/10/2019 22:22

Bar of soap for me. Works great!

Anayah2019 · 03/10/2019 01:05

Seriously works for me.. That's the whole purpose for me recommending 2 you ladies. Can't knock it until you've gave it a whirl for yourself. No the brushes and sponges will be fine so long as tied in case tightly. And drying them u would say either on top of radiator or just on the window ledge overnight should be fine. Wink

AllDaySnacker · 03/10/2019 10:21

For the really expensive brushes, I swirl them in a little pot of micellar water (pink top Garnier) then wash with slightly diluted non-oil based facial cleanser in the palm of my hand. Rinse, remove excess water and air dry away from steamy bathroom.

BusterGonad · 03/10/2019 11:25

Traditional soap or shampoo, wash, rinse, then apply conditioner, leave for 10 minutes, rinse and then dry on their side on top of some kitchen roll. Do not let them get saturated as the glue will get ruined and the brushes will go bald. I'd never wash them in the machine or use washing up liquid. I think if I'm not prepared to use it on my skin then I won't wash my brushes in it.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/10/2019 11:48

I only really use sponges. Day to day they go in hot water and antibacterial hand-wash. Every week they go in the washing machine with towels and my reusable cotton pads. Come up lovely and clean.

mnthrowaway2099 · 03/10/2019 12:10

I use Beauty Blender solid cleanser, it is fabulous and the best product for sponges.

I also use a Sigma brush cleaning mat, which is a rubber texturised mat that sits in your sink, you rub your brushes onto the corresponding section of the mat then rinse - makes it really fast and easy to clean lots of brushes!

I have a lot of makeup brushes though, so it used to be such a chore that would take over an hour without these two products!

zinrepus · 03/10/2019 12:14

I use one of the Lush bar shampoos (the lemon one, whatever it's called). Wet brush, swirl on bar, swirl on hand under water until brush is free from bubbles. Cheaper than the brush-cleaning-specific solid soaps lots of companies (Beauty Blender, Lottie London, etc) push and lasts longer...

Toastymash · 03/10/2019 12:16

Buy a spray bottle of isopropyl alcohol and spray that onto the brushes, then run then in circles on a tissue. Done.

Please don't put them in the washing machine. Anything that wets the glue in the brushes will ruin them over time

ReeRi · 03/10/2019 19:14

I would do this in between washes but think they need a wash with soap and water or shampoo too

thisenglishlife · 03/10/2019 19:55

@ReeRi sponges can go in the machine (in a delicates bag or similar), but not brushes as it will melt the glue that helps hold the bristles together.

ElizaPancakes · 03/10/2019 21:43

I use washing up liquid and vegetable oil. Mix together in about equal parts, it really gets it all out.

A scrubby palette thing also helpful but not essential.

DianaPrinceRocks · 03/10/2019 21:59

I use the spinner thing that was on the Apprentice I think and it's bloody brilliant. I promise I am not affiliatedGrin.

Each brush is washed and fully dry in less than a minute.

Now, if your brush is really manky and not cleaned for years (ahem I might have been guilty of this Blush) it won't be perfect and might need a few goes. Also it struggles a bit with small flat brushes. But I still love it.

Just checked and mine is the StylPro but I think you can get cheaper versions. I use their cleaning solution as I didn't have much luck with shampoo but I only need a tiny bit per wash.

mnthrowaway2099 · 04/10/2019 18:38

Can’t believe how differently we all clean our brushes. I wash mine regularly with a dedicated Mac cleanser because my makeup doesn’t apply as nicely when my brushes are dirty and already saturated with product.

I would never put brushes or sponges in the washing machine, that’s overkill.

Violetroselily · 04/10/2019 18:41

Fairy liquid, warm water and one of these mats

ReeRi · 04/10/2019 19:18

@thisenglishlife Yes absolutely agree. Tell that to all those apparently saying they put their brushes in the washing machine!

newnameeeforthis · 04/10/2019 19:27

I don't use anything on my make up brushes that I wouldn't put on my face, so either cleanser or micellar water with a brush cleaning mat. Warm water and cleanser or face wash on sponges.

PennyNotSoWise · 04/10/2019 19:52

I use hot water and washing up liquid to clean the beauty blender. Though my puppy the little shit chewed up my Beauty Blender last night, I'm gutted. My own fault, I knocked it off the stand it was airing on.

I had to use brushes to apply my foundation this morning and I look a mess Shock Genuinely no idea how I manged before the beauty blender, I must have looked fucking shocking without realising Grin

ThanksForAllTheFish · 04/10/2019 22:31

I wash them with soap and water. Brushes weekly and blender sponge after each use. I disinfect brushes and sponges every couple of weeks with hibiscrub. You need to be careful to rinse it away properly and not to get it in your eyes, nose or ears. It’s basically the stuff surgeons use to scrub up before operating. A little goes a long way and the bottle lasts ages. I’ve been using it for years for years, it has also been useful to clear up my red skin on my face that I thought for ages was rosacea.

(We use it on the horses to clear up leg mites caused from straw and hay so thought I’d give it a go for my face and it worked wonders. Just need to be really, really careful not to get it in the eyes/nose/ears as it can do some damage).

CandyCaneLane0 · 04/10/2019 22:44

Warm water and a bar of Simple soap

thisenglishlife · 05/10/2019 19:58

I should point out my sponge (beauty blender style one) is usually washed with soap and water. However, it also goes in the machine occasionally.

I totally agree with you @PennyNotSoWise in regards to the sponges. They give you an airbrushed look that brushes don't. I only need a tiny bit of foundation that way too.
