Properly waterproof and not frumpy coat (NOT Sea Salt)?

I need a replacement for my Sea Salt knee-length coat that leaks at the shoulder seams. I got in touch with SS who said it had come to the end of its life. WFT? It cost £150 and I expected it to last more than 3 years.

In any case, any recommendations for a not-frumpy waterproof coat suitable for autumn temperatures? Ideally not costing more than about £150!

Protected Species. Life changing waterproof jackets...in the sense that I've never found one I didn't feel frumpy in before these. I love the commuter and the city walker

Just ordered one this morning from Rains, the Curve coat. £95

RandomUsernameHere · 24/09/2019 17:26

Watching with interest. I've got a really good Joules one that has only just lost its waterproof-ness after 10 years, so good quality, but it doesn't look stylish.

ThirstyGhost · 24/09/2019 17:56

Another vote for Protected Species. I'm waiting for sales though.

HundredMilesAnHour · 24/09/2019 20:08

I definitely recommend Rains. They're great quality, totally waterproof and frumpy at all. And within budget. Smile

HundredMilesAnHour · 24/09/2019 20:09

Oops, that should have read "NOT frumpy at all"

museumum · 24/09/2019 20:12

I love my uniqlo long waterproof coat. It’s totally waterproof but not insulated so I wear a thin insulated jacket underneath. Perfect.

JoanLewis · 24/09/2019 20:12

Thanks. I like Protected Species but they're a bit too expensive and I'm also looking for something with a lining/ bit of warmth for Autumn. Off to check out Rains now...

I like my almost knee length navy Regatta parka from last years Alesha Dixon collection - it's smart, warm & I've found very waterproof.
I got it less than half price in the sale so it was about £50.
One of my friends liked it so much she got the same coat in khaki.

I know Mumsnet are offering money off this years Kimberley Walsh X Regatta collection, I haven't had a look but I assume the coats are quite similar?

choppolata · 24/09/2019 20:37

Does it not have a lifetime guarantee? Seasalt are usually really good with customer service.

applesandacorns · 24/09/2019 21:40

My vote is also for Rains. They have both classic and fun styles (I have the holographic pink trench).

JoanLewis · 24/09/2019 22:14

Choppolata - No! I was quite [shocked] when the customer services person implied that the coat was 'coming to the end of its life' after 4 years (in fact, it started leaking last year). I have older far less stylish rainwear that's still as waterproof as the day I bought it. So I'm really disappointed and not inclined to spend another £150 on a Sea Salt coat that will be useless in three years...

Have had a look at Rains and all the coats that have any sort of lining are out of budget sadly. And Regatta all seem to be heavily insulated or have none at all. I'm looking for something for Autumn - a bit of insulation, but not super warm...

That's really annoying! I hope you find a better one. I wonder if there's anything you could do in the meantime with seam sealer, like you get for leaky tents?

nzeire · 25/09/2019 05:16

Save for a rains, they are gorgeous. My alpine one is so light and snug at the same time. No leaks and a great hood.

evilharpy · 25/09/2019 06:13

I started a similar thread recently if you scroll down a bit, there were some good suggestions. I ended up buying a navy Stormbridge from Joules which had its first outing yesterday in the pouring rain and did the job well. It was on sale online for about £60.

It looks a bit like a school coat but it’s fairly inoffensive and not patterned/twee which I hate.

NicolaStart · 25/09/2019 06:19

Pretty bad of Seasalt, mine has lasted and stayed waterproof for 6 or 7 years now.

Have you tried washing it with Nikwax?

NicolaStart · 25/09/2019 06:19

P.S Nikwax waterproofing treatment

redchocolatebutton · 25/09/2019 06:23

StrongTea · 25/09/2019 06:30

Craghoppers have an outlet section.

Isitme13 · 25/09/2019 06:36

I have a craghoppers one with removable lining.

First outing yesterday (waterproof only as not particularly cold) and was great in the downpour.

I got it for £60 ish on amazon of all places

Bloomburger · 25/09/2019 06:44

Aigle do some lovely waterproof coats which aren't frumpy. I've had mine for about 10 years and just put it through washer with a waterproofing treatment each year.

Celticrose · 25/09/2019 06:44

drspouse · 25/09/2019 06:46

I have a Craghoppers padded one which is a few years old. The zip went though so it's at the mender.
