To Fringe or Not to Fringe?

Having my hair cut on thursday and dabbling with the idea of having a fringe cut in.
My hair is long (bra lenght), brown, incredibly thick and has a natural wave in it. But think more puff ball then beach waves. I spend 99% of my time with it up in a bun. Oh and I wear glasses.
Is finge a really terribly bad idea?

I love a full fringe but it’s a pain in the arse because it needs cutting so often to look good.

WellTidy · 24/09/2019 08:44

I cut a fringe into my full length hair when I was 14. I am 44 now and haven’t been able to persevere to grow it out.

BenWillbondsPants · 24/09/2019 08:46

I love a fringe. I grow mine out occasionally and always always have it cut in again.

MikeUniformMike · 24/09/2019 09:57

Have you had a fringe before, and if so did it behave?

Soola · 24/09/2019 09:57

I love my fringe. It’s protected my forehead from the sun and I have only the faintest of a frown line and I’m 53.

As I’ve got older it has become very thick and I like my hair long.

However, I decided on a whim yesterday to cut it shorter. It was neat to my waist but I tied it back in a ponytail at the nape of my neck and cut down the length, straight across to the desired length I wanted the back to be.

It is a little bit longer than the photo but the same style. Everyone thinks it looks better and my face looks lifted.

Fringes are fab! I cut mine by gently twisting it to give a very slight curve.

Photo - my hair is very similar to this

To Fringe or Not to Fringe?

I wouldn't unless you'll style your hair every day. If your hair is puffy by nature then you'll never be able to do anything casual.

Have you considered a Brazilian blow-dry or something? That way your fringe and hair would behave with little input from you.

evilharpy · 24/09/2019 10:53

I loved my fringe and have cut it back in a few times over the years, but my hair is naturally very frizzy and the slightest hint of moisture and it turns into a disaster, and I wake up every morning with my fringe looking like Jedward. Brazilian blow dries just don't last long enough to be worth it. So I've reluctantly grown it out (again) and resisted cutting it back in.

We're watching Money Heist on Netflix and Tokyo's fringe is making me desperate to have a fringe again although sadly I don't have her bone structure to match.

wouldyouadamandeveit · 24/09/2019 10:59

I was actually going to start a post on whether it's possible to get fringe extensions as I hate mine!

I'm a puff ball, wash and straighten every day and as soon as I've open the front door my fringe just kinks and looks crap!

So personally, I'd say no fringe.

Fabuleuse · 24/09/2019 12:34

Wow you could be me, I was even born in 84 (presuming you were too) although my hair is a wee bit shorter and I usually go for ponytail rather than bun, but apart from that everything else is identical to yours. I got a full fringe cut in in April after years of dithering. I'm still on the fence about it. When it behaves I think it's much more flattering to my face to have a bit of hair softening it rather than just all pulled back. However the regular cutting is a pain and it never really gets that sleek, heavy look to it even though it's a thick fringe - it just wants to puff all over the place, and then if I straighten it, it looks kind of limp and weird. I'm thinking of changing to a side fringe instead. I don't regret trying it though! It's only hair and it'll grow quickly enough. Since you wear your hair in a bun anyway it's dead easy to pin back if you decide it's not for you.

IceniSky · 24/09/2019 12:38

I have had one cut I twice. I always throw it back out. I love fringes but my hair is frizzy / puff ball wavy and I just had to style it every morning. Rain, humidity etc just made it awful!

nothingwittyhere · 24/09/2019 14:03

IME the thicker your fringe the more it behaves. But that could just be mine. I never style it beyond brushing into place and adding my usual styling products (thickener and some mousse on the roots) and it looks fine - rather like the photo posted above. I trim it myself with cheap-ish hair cutting scissors from Boots.

Sarcelle · 24/09/2019 14:10

A tip for frizzy fringe. Buy a firm toothbrush, and flexible hold hair spray. Spray the brush then run it through the fringe. Helps eliminate the frizz. Game changer for me.

goose1964 · 24/09/2019 18:30

Beware, I have wavy hair too and last time I had a fringe it looked great wet but when it dried it curled up and was like I'd had a poodle perm on it. Straightening it was no good, it would only last for a couple of hours before it was back to its curl.

Soola · 24/09/2019 18:40

It takes me less than two minutes to cut/trim my fringe in my bathroom. Very low maintenance.

rosedream · 24/09/2019 18:44

It all depends on your face shape. Impossible to say.

BogglesGoggles · 24/09/2019 18:44

Fringes are very high maintenance if your hair isn’t well behaved.

BogglesGoggles · 24/09/2019 18:45

They’re also very ageing on anyone who doesn’t have perfectly smooth skin.

Treaclebee · 24/09/2019 18:48

Do you know what Kibbe type you are? I found the Kibbe system very very good at helping me work out what to do with my hair (after many years of trial and error).
It's not usually the sort of thing I'd be into but it seems to work far better than the usual round/square/oval etc face and body shape stuff.

tryingoutgreyhair · 24/09/2019 18:55

Have you got a good jaw? I had a fringe cut in (I used to have a fringe all through teens and twenties) but it looked terrible as my jaw is now a bit saggy and square (prev more rounded heart) and it really emphasised it.

JeSuisPrest · 24/09/2019 19:02

My hair is exactly the same as you describe yours, even down to colour and length. Beautiful one length hair, can be a bit temperamental unless beaten to within an inch of it's life with straighteners if I'm trying to scrub up well.

I had a fringe cut. I looked like the love child of Noel Fielding and Claudia Winkleman. 😭

I would never do it again. Took ages to grow out and I still can't look at any photographs of myself during that unfortunate period.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 24/09/2019 19:24

I cut a fringe in last year when I was desperate for a change and didn't want to change the length or colour of my hair.
I loved it for a few days but DH hated it and the extra work every day to style it into position or wash the extra grease out, I lost interest in it fairly quickly.
I've given up on fringes for me, I've ordered my hairdresser to refuse to do it when I get the urge to chop one in again.

mistermagpie · 24/09/2019 20:55

My face really suits a fringe but I don't have the hair for it. If your hair is anything other than well behaved then it becomes too high maintenance. Mine would end up puffy and kinky and straggly and just shit.

Saying that, if you go for it then it will grow back so it's worth a try if you fancy and change.

DrWAnker · 24/09/2019 20:57

Hmm, came on to say instant botox but my hair is fine and generally well behaved.
I would proceed with caution if I were you.

managedmis · 24/09/2019 21:20

Depends on the size of your forehead, the climate you live in and if you can be arsed every day
