Hi All,

I’ve been having hairloss for the last five months and am currently in the process of having blood tested. I’ve attached a photo - please be honest. Is it very noticeable?

@SirVixofVixHall thank you for your lovely comment. Today has been a down day! Went to the hairdresser and she was surprised by how much I’ve lost. I’m sure it’s all thyroid related 😟

I would not say you have hair loss! It looks thick and perfectly normal.

I notice I tend to moult about twice a year and alarming amounts come out when I wash it.

Going back nearly 30 years now ( when I was in my late 20's) my hair started to fall out in the same way as yours. None of my friends/colleagues noticed but it was very noticeable to me, particularly in the amount of hair that came out when washing it. I had blood tests but nothing really showed up. I had, however, been really poorly with a stomach bug/food poisoning 3 months earlier - ill for 3 weeks and lost 1 1/2 stone - and GP just put it down to loss of nutrients during that time. I had my hair cut quite short so the thinning wasn't so obvious and I'm pleased to say that it did eventually thicken up again.

Have you been ill at all OP?

SirVixofVixHall · 21/09/2019 20:17

I have an underactive thyroid, also very low vitamin D.

Sarahlouiseis33 · 21/09/2019 20:31

@SirVixofVixHall Do you know what your levels are kept at? My TSH is very suppressed, T4 just over range and T3 right at the top of range. I’m wondering if I’m maybe over treated as when the hair loss started I was getting overheated quite a lot and also I seem to now have very oily skin whereas it’s always been dry/slightly oily x

I'm struggling to see where this hair loss is? Your hair looks fine OP👌🏻

zippyswife · 21/09/2019 20:40

It’s not noticeable at all. I hope you get it sorted it sounds very stressful Flowers

Greyhound22 · 21/09/2019 20:51

Have they checked your Vit D? I have lots of deficiencies and problems but low vitamin D makes my hair drop out.

Also they should be able to get all your levels back within a week or so. Make sure it's followed up.

BTW it looks fine honestly

MadameButterface · 21/09/2019 20:56

It looks fine to me op, although of course we always notice things more on ourselves. I hope you get some answers though, it’s not nice struggling with auto immune stuff.

No I need testing now as it was ok, TSH around one, but I have made an effort to lose some weight and now I feel my dose might be slightly high, as I am also feeling hotter, not sleeping as well, but very tired. Hair loss usually happens when it is under, but it doesn’t ever seem to recover , although it doesn’t shed as much when my levels are ok.

I do wonder if the vitamin D is as much of a prob as thyroid.

Btw, try and avoid putting your hair up in any styles that place stress at the front or on your parting, or are tight. Claw clips are back from the 80s and are everywhere, so are scrunchies, i even bought a banana clip off ebay the other day, remember them? Or you can get buff type headbands quite cheaply off amazon. these are all good options for getting your hair off your face but keeping it nice and loose. You could also try sleeping with a silk pillow case or silk scarf/bonnet so it’s not rubbing on your pillow at night, maybe a silk scarf round your car seat headrest if you drive a lot, just treat it kindly and gently, try not to twiddle or touch it if this is something you do when you get anxious. I promise you no one can tell or thinks anything about it! Your own anxiety about it won’t help though (easy for me to say i know).

Did you find your hairdresser supportive? If not, find another one. I am a hairdresser and in the salon i work at we have a few clients with hair loss, and we are really conscious to put them at ease (eg booking appts when they will be the only client in the salon if they feel uncomfortable, etc). But we hear stories of clients who’ve been laughed at or felt they weren’t taken seriously elsewhere.
