It rains so much in the summer in China that if I didn't wear socks with my Birkies in the autumn, I'd never get to wear them.

It's not mandatory. You could simply wear appropriate footwear.

The whole purpose of sandals is for the feet to be exposed. If I need warm feet, I wear comfortable shoes.

lweji in most of Asia, socks and sandals is totally normal.
