No spend on S&B for the rest of the year, who's in?

Shitonthebloodything · 19/09/2019 14:42

I need an intervention. I can't be alone, there must be other S&Bers who feel the same.

Up until a couple of months ago I had barely any clothes and hated shopping. Then I had a style analysis and found out what suited me and since then I've not stopped shopping! I bloody love it but I need to stop. I'm a bargain hunter and get so much joy from finding nice things cheaply, it's like an obsession. But, I have enough. There are many many things I haven't even worn yet.

I absolutely cannot buy anything else this year.

Is anyone else the same? Do you want to join me whilst I try and cure my shopping addiction before it becomes a financial crisis?

Want to share your overbuying confessions in a judgement free zone? Come on in!

I am in, unfortunately I have had your shopping addiction for around 20 years and my house is bursting with clothes many brand new. I have tried to stop buying but I just can’t help myself, I’m wondering if total avoidance is the key?

Thedevilofsmallthings · 19/09/2019 16:05

I love it too but had many many years with a very small wardrobe.

Internet shopping allowed me access to a big variety of shops which has been great. I'm making up for lost time and I never say 'I've nothing to wear' anymore.
I'm still careful with my purchases and always return items if they don't fit.
You might find it easier to give yourself a monthly budget rather than say 'no spend'. Also put items in the shopping basket, then leave it for 24 hours and see if you still want it after a cool off period.

whythewait · 19/09/2019 16:49

I can see this is a good idea as I’ve often put things in a basket then forgotten what was in there 🙈

Shitonthebloodything · 19/09/2019 18:44

Imaginary shopping used to be my favourite pastime. I'd sit for hours filling baskets of online stuff then never checkout on them but now I know what suits me I actually do buy them! I used to return impulse buys but now I just want want want everything. It's not healthy. Enough is enough.

The only things I'm allowed to buy is wedding underwear and replacements for essential makeup items only after they run out.

Can I ask where you got your style analysis done, please @Shitonthebloodything?

NotStayingIn · 19/09/2019 22:37

I’m in. Although for me it’s beauty products. I really need to use up everything I own before I buy any more stuff.

MabelMoo23 · 20/09/2019 09:40

I've had a style analysis done by Styled by Susie. It's bloody ace, she's fab and genuinely makes a difference

Shitonthebloodything · 20/09/2019 16:05

Glad I have some recruits!

@colourlessgreenidea it was with Styled by Susie. I loved it. For someone who needed a complete wardrobe revamp it was so helpful.

it was with Styled by Susie. I loved it

Thank you, I’ll look that up. I am in desperate need of help! Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/09/2019 20:44

I'm sort of in (once I buy a couple of jumpers)

I have coats, jeggings and foot wear.
In my defence re:jumpers, I was dithering over one at M&S but I didn't love it so I put it back calmly .

I need to find one long enough, loads are boxy'n'wide .

Not have you joined in the Beauty Hoarders Thread? Using up everything in the Beauty Stash before you buy more .

Rollerbird · 20/09/2019 20:54

I had decided to not buy clothes until 1 march 2020 unless I NEED to. Eg knickers or socks (probably OK here too)
I went mad for about 3 years after an inheritance, but I do have enough I think.
It's tough though!

Rocaille · 21/09/2019 10:49

Great idea for a thread, OP.

I tend to buy a lot of cheap, ill-fitting clothes as a displacement activity for actually taking care of my body and appearance. Blush

My bank balance is really suffering and I need to stop this!

I also want to cut back on makeup, skincare, etc spending. I'm pretty close to getting a regime I'm really happy with, at which point it'll be a case of simply replacing empties.

NotStayingIn · 21/09/2019 19:51

@70isaLimitNotaTarget thanks for recommending the Beauty Hoarders thread! Will join.

Shitonthebloodything · 21/09/2019 20:11

Fuck.
Bought some snag tights (have loads of dresses and skirts that I need to make use of instead of buying more jeans so really saving, right?)
Also bought some Ameliorate cream because my KP is really getting me down and there was 20% off. Fuck sake.

OP posts:
Rocaille · 22/09/2019 07:35

That doesn't sound too bad, OP. Or were you intending to buy absolutely nothing at all, not even small items?

Redandblue11 · 22/09/2019 11:56

I am in! I have started 4 weeks ago and my intention is not to buy till Feb 2020, or if I can stretch till march, even better.
Although the last couple of years I have been buying more sensibly stuff that I know I will wear, I still had this need to slow down as let’s be honest I really do not need anything else.
So, I am trying to sort my weekly wear in advance (recommended in another thread) with clothes that I do not normally wear, look at combining stuff I have in a different way, to break the routine and still give me “kick” of the instant happy feeling you get when you wear something new. So I am trying to be more creative with stuff I have.
Obviously not going overboard, but saving for best is not worth it imo.
Also, I had some clothes I had not worn as they needed taken in, put buttons, etc.. so I took a load to my local seamstress and I got them back now and no more excuses not to wear them.
Any other tips?
I have the best intentions but I know at some point I will get itchy feet! Or hands shall I say? 😁

Redandblue11 · 22/09/2019 11:57

Meant to say, I am applying the above to clothes and with regards to beauty I will buy as I wear my current stuff out.

LunaTheCat · 22/09/2019 12:02

I am in. I live in Southern Hemisphere so going into Spring - heaps of summer clothes so I have no excuse to spend. Hope you ladies will keep me honest!

Rollerbird · 22/09/2019 15:44

I've got a list of things that I want but don't NEED so I'm trying to feel proud every day I don't buy them! 😁

JMAngel1 · 22/09/2019 15:49

Oh god it's so hard but god, get the ameliorate - KP is annoying.
I do need to replace jumpers and t shirts as they look so worn and bobbly. Ditto boots - I struggle to make any pair of boots last more than a year - I must walk funny!

What kind of advice did Suze give you? Was it colour, shape. Can you give us examples p!ease?

Shitonthebloodything · 22/09/2019 18:21

To be fair my KP is really quite severe and covers most of my body. If the ameliorate is all it's cracked up to be it would make a huge difference to me so I'm letting myself off the hook for those now.

I love the idea of planning out your wardrobe for the week. I'm using an app called your closet where I've been cataloguing my wardrobe (doubled up on a secret Pinterest board incase it crashes!) And making outfits so I can use this. I love everything I have now so will make a game of trying not to wear the same things together twice.

Re the analysis, I'm an obvious hourglass just wasn't sure if my colouring and I was getting that very wrong. I'm also under 5ft and curvy so the shop recommendations were a real help. I also got info on the trousers and skirts that would suit which has helped loads. I'm wearing dresses and skirts again for the first time in years

OP posts:
JMAngel1 · 22/09/2019 18:33

Nip and Fab do a cheaper Glycolic Fix body cream - also good for KP.

BishopFrownofStThigh · 22/09/2019 18:58

Kind of in:

Beauty my eye kohl and eyebrow pencil were worn down to stubs and my mother flicked my favourite lipstick down the back of the radiator and can't retrieve it so I replaced all 3. Nothing else required.

Style I just want a dress for winter. I'll do it very frugally.

thisenglishlife · 22/09/2019 19:04

Try IPL or laser for KP. KP is caused by inflamed and plugged hair follicles, so it works on it really well.

Inflammation also makes it worse, so less sugar and gluten and take fish oils or veggie omega 3 oil.

Exfoliation and products with urea, lactic acid or salicylic acid do help but can't get rid of it completely.

Osc70 · 22/09/2019 23:33

I’m in.... I think, I find online shopping my fix now, must stop have too many clothes and spending too much, then I don’t bloody wear it !

Any tips on stop online shop and then not wearing the stuff ?
