Do you dress to stand out or blend in?

Just that really and I suspect this has been asked before. I include hair, makeup accessories etc.

I dress etc to stand out, not in a wearing all the colours of the rainbow way. I work full time and have a professional job with responsibility but I like to think that there is one thing about my outfit that stands out each day.

I'm a goth so I stand out, I'm not just in black jeans and a band hoodie I mean really "gothed up" when I go anywhere even shopping! I do however dress this way to please myself and no one else!

Blueandredandblue · 18/09/2019 19:14

I'm not sure tbh. I think it depends on the environment. In my local area I probably stand out, but in central London I don't.

Thinkle · 18/09/2019 19:27

I guess my question is more, do you plan to or want to stand out? rather than do you actually stand out.

I've always dressed to blend in and toned it down for the school gates etc but I'm just beginning to stop giving so many fucks and seeing as I'm only half way through my 20 years of school runs I might as well wear what I like instead for the rest of it. Sod it.

Chitarra · 18/09/2019 19:37

I dress to blend in. I buy clothes that I think are nice and fit me well from shops like Next. I don't want to wear something unique or amazing.

It's not that I lack confidence - in fact I have healthy self esteem - but my looks aren't a big thing for me.

Zinnia · 18/09/2019 19:39

Hair and makeup not so much, but clothes-wise, yes definitely (most days) dress to stand out. I work in a creative environment and in some ways it's more noticeable if you don't dress that way.

Interesting @Chitarra, I have periods of low self esteem, self doubt, imposter syndrome at work etc.

Neither really. It’s entirely situation dependent. I wear work clothes for work but they are very formal, so would stand out on a bus or in a supermarket but not at work.
Everyday wear is just usual dog walking/ grubbing around in the country type things. Most people would wear similar locally but in London it might look a touch provincial.
I do like the odd occasion when dressing up is de rigeur and do choose to stand out a little - but then everyone does so nobody really stands out.

june2007 · 18/09/2019 19:55

Neither. And what I whare depends on situation at work is work top and navy or black trousers. No point having anything too nice either as I work with children. (think paint, glue, bodily fluids, food.)

bengalcat · 18/09/2019 19:57

I dress to please myself .

picklemepopcorn · 18/09/2019 20:00

I dress in clothes I like. Standing out or blending in doesn't occur to me. I try and avoid looking enormously fat, though.

I like colour and interesting cuts, so I probably stand out.

RezCowgirl · 18/09/2019 20:10

I wouldn't say I dress to stand out but I don't like to dress like the rest of the crowd. The items of clothing aren't particularly remarkable or wacky but I do have an individual style with the things I put together for example.

skippingtoamerrytune · 18/09/2019 20:21

I admire people who know how to dress well. I think everything looks awful on me and just end up wearing jeggings and a plain t-shirt. I'm the epitome of blending in! I have such a boring wardrobe. I love seeing people wearing what they want and looking comfortable in it too.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 18/09/2019 20:22

I don't really think about it but gravitate towards statement jewellery, nice bags and I'm fond of a vivid nail colour. Definitely love clothes and have a few wow things. I'm more adventurous in my middle age, was a gothy teen, dull through my 20's and thirties and got into clothes in my forties.

RavenLG · 18/09/2019 20:26

I don’t really think about it, I buy things because I like them. I don’t follow fashion at all though, I just buy what I think is nice.

managedmis · 18/09/2019 20:28

I plan to stand out, I'd say it's more dressing to impress. I'm always wearing heels, smart skirts etc, for work. I wear colours that suit me, which tend to be jewel colours so I guess this draws attention.

At weekend I'm a rugrat

ODW4172 · 18/09/2019 20:29

My style is very classic but my colours stand out from the day to day drab. Would never buy anything that's popular either

ThursdayLastWeek · 18/09/2019 20:29

I quite like a vaguely classic look with eye catching details. Usually accessories.
So I suppose I dress to encourage a double take.

JoJoSM2 · 18/09/2019 20:32

It's never crossed my mind to think if clothes stand out or blend in. I just wear what I like which is quite classic so blends in.

moonpiggle · 18/09/2019 20:35

I think Im drawn to unusual clothing. I do get told alot that I wear 'mad stuff' but I can pull anything off! Haha I take it as a compliment and I really do love to just look different/edgy. My Dad is the same. Also as Im getting older im becoming more confident in my style..i love fashion.

Miseryisabutterfly · 18/09/2019 21:02

I wear what I like most of the time, but I do find if I’m feeling particularly shit (or about to get my period), that I favour things that don’t stand out.

UnicornsExist · 18/09/2019 21:09

My biggest statement are my hair extensions. I have almost bum length blonde extensions. Without them I feel drab, lack confidence and disappear into a crowd. With my extensions I feel sexy, I stand out and I feel younger than my 41 years. Expensive but worth every penny.

Mintysmoons · 18/09/2019 21:10

I haven’t really given it much thought. I suppose I dress more to blend in these days.
In the past, I loved to wear unusual clothes but now that I’m fat, I can’t get away with it as well.

Tinkerbellx · 18/09/2019 21:39

Neither to be honest op .
I dress in what makes me feel comfortable and attractive and seems to work x
