What kind of coat do you wear when it's raining?

evilharpy · 15/09/2019 09:50

I had a good chuckle at the teddy bear coat thread where it was suggested they look like a wet dog when it's raining - I've never worn one in the rain but can completely see how that would be true.

Anyway. I have far too many coats but most of them are either wool, faux fur, leather or cotton trench types. When it's chucking it down I wear a parka I bought from Next in 2006 which is still going strong - no other coat has ever lasted me so long - but I could do with another option now I have the unavoidable school run. Up until now I've got away with boots and an umbrella and refusing to go outside if the rain is horizontal.

So I'm wondering what everyone else wears when it's really miserable out?

Joules Coast jacket - not stylish at all but has been good quality and waterproof. Has seen me through many a wet school run!

tierraJ · 15/09/2019 10:29

When it rains in the summer I wear my Joules Right as Rain navy & delicate floral waterproof jacket;
When it rains in the winter I wear my navy Alesha Dixon X Regatta Lucasta parka.

Both have kept me dry in downpours & look smart too for example I can wear them over my outfit if I'm on a night out & it's raining.

Quite often it's too windy to use a brolly so I chose jackets with good hoods!

tierraJ · 15/09/2019 10:30

I got the Joules jacket in the sale in June for £29 & the Regatta coat last winter less than half price for about £50.

foxtiger · 15/09/2019 18:49

I don't enjoy wearing truly waterproof coats as they really make me overheat, unless it's also very cold and windy. So most of the time I choose something lightweight and not wool or cotton, so that it will cry quickly if it does get wet. A fleece works well for that in informal situations, or on a dressier occasion I'll wear a short black trench and carry an umbrella. (I also dislike using an umbrella, and love getting rain on my hair as it makes it wonderfully curly, but there are occasions when it would just be silly to turn up wet and everyone would make annoying comments.)

My actual waterproof is from Bon Marché and is a nice cheerful red and white spotty pattern.

foxtiger · 15/09/2019 18:49

dry, not cry!

borntobequiet · 15/09/2019 18:53

I have a Soaked in Luxury completely waterproof parka I got from TK Maxx for about £25. Light enough for summer, loose enough to go over autumn/spring clothes. Fantastic bargain and looks good too.

Protected species Mac or Parka, beloved of MNetters and I can see why. The rain just rolls off it.

Redact · 15/09/2019 19:13

Should add they quite often have discount codes on here

Alwayscheerful · 15/09/2019 19:58

Protected species jacket

I have quite a collection of waterproof jackets/coats (I like to go out walking and don't want the rain to stop me).

For hardcore exposure to the elements, I have a top of the range technical coat from Finisterre. It stops rain, wind everything and the only a tiny bit of my face peeps out of the hood. And it's actually very chic looking rather.

When I'm 'around town' , I have a couple of waterproof trench coats from Rains of Denmark. One shiny blue, one shiny black one, one shiny pink one. I also have a slightly different style (still Rains) in shiny dark green with a hood. I've been going through a shiny phase as you can tell!!! Then I have a matt see-through short black jacket from Rains collaboration with Net-a-Porter and a shiny clear short jacket also from the Net-a-Porter collaboration.

I do love a waterproof coat. Actually, that's not entirely true. I just love coats!!!!

Don't even get me started on my 'lesser' selection of water-resistant coats and jackets. Blush

Oldraver · 15/09/2019 20:19

I have an 8 year old (ish) Jack Wolfskin that I wear in the winter, and Icycle to work so we're talking proper going out in rain.

For light rain I have an Aycucho anorak

If I'm just popping to the shops I have a couple of short trench type coats

TateWorm · 15/09/2019 20:22

I have a 3 in 1 Karrimor jacket, I tend to wear the fleece most of the time on its own, but the waterproof part is fantastic when it rains. I can only use both parts together in the worst of the winter weather as I find it really too warm at any other time.

Lucked · 15/09/2019 20:33

I live in Scotland so have lots of jackets with hoods as the wind here normally wrecks umbrellas.

Joules Coast
Isle Jacobsen long softshell coat
Gloverall duffle coat which is wool but always keeps me dry
I also have two short ski jackets one Nike and one Merrell.
Short light Berghaus jacket

Lucked · 15/09/2019 20:34

Oh and a regatta parka which is surprising good for the price I paid.

Chipsahoy · 15/09/2019 21:28

North face rain coat. If it's winter I wear a fleece under it.

Hoppinggreen · 15/09/2019 21:31

I’ve got a Helly Hansen, I sized up so I can wear a fleece under when it’s colder.

nononever · 15/09/2019 21:37

Protected Species here too. I have a North Face and a Rab for hiking/walking.

hammeringinmyhead · 16/09/2019 09:59

I bought a yellow Joules jacket when I was pregnant about 18 months ago but it's 2 sizes too big now, so I've just bought a cloud-print waterproof from Brakeburn. I also have a navy mac with leather trim from Ralph Lauren but that's a bit too nice for throwing into the boot when going out with baby, pram, etc.

I have a Burberry Daylesmoore but that does not see raindrops. Ever.

FaerieKiss · 16/09/2019 10:52

I wear a Seasalt coat made from their fantastic tin-cloth fabric, in olive green. It's plain and lightweight and indestructible.

evilharpy · 16/09/2019 13:02

Thanks for all the replies. Lots for me to check out. I do like the Protected Species ones but don't think I could really stretch to one... it's literally for doing the school run as otherwise I refuse to go out in any rain beyond a drizzle unless I'm driving door to door Grin I'm a weather wimp.

FaerieKiss I looked briefly at SeaSalt and quite liked this one. Do they often have sales or discount codes I wonder?

I wouldn't wear a patterned coat of any kind other than a subtle check/tartan, I don't wear anything "cute" and very rarely do bright colours so that narrows it down a bit. Fussy cow that I am.

Evil - I have that jacket, it’s great. If you sign up for emails you find out when the sales are.

Puppylucky · 16/09/2019 20:45

I've just bought the uniqlo waterproof short parka and it's really stylish

evilharpy · 17/09/2019 12:53

Any opinions on this? It's very warm and I wonder if it would be too heavy but I do like the look of it and it's comfy.

Am keen to avoid looking like I'm on my way up an actual mountain.

I popped into Seasalt but didn't really like anything there.

Hoppinggreen · 18/09/2019 09:23

No, that reminds me of the coats we all had for school in the 80’s
