GHD straighteners - worth the money?

My trusty old hair straighteners have died. What would you recommend as a replacement? I’ve got fine shoulder length hair that’s moderately wavg.

I've had my GHD straighteners since 2003 so I think they are worth the money.Mostly just use them for my fringe nowadays.

OldGrinch · 10/09/2019 12:06

GHS straighteners are supposed to have now been eclipsed by the Cloud 9 brand. Apparently Cloud 9 was started by the same guy who originally started GHD. Anyway I have used both types and can't see much difference to be honest. What I can recommend are the LOreal SteamPod straighteners which are amazing and the best ones I've ever had. Make my hair smooth and shiny instantly and much better than the GHDs.

Babyliss elegance.
Had them years. Around £60. Brilliant- as is the hairdryer.

Creas35 · 10/09/2019 12:26

I think GHDs are well worth the money for the simple fact they last years and years. They are also good straighteners.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 10/09/2019 12:31

Always had GHDs but I'm told Cloud Nine are even better!

Roseability18 · 10/09/2019 12:35

I remember thinking GHDs were super expensive but I’ve had the same pair for 15 years so on cost per use they were a bargain!

MagicKingdom · 10/09/2019 12:35

Cloud 9, far better than ghds.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 10/09/2019 12:38

I’ve had mine at least 15 years so yes worth it, I rarely use them these days but they worked hard for a long time.

MarySibleysFamiliar · 10/09/2019 12:39

I adore my GHDs. They're the second pair I've owned in over 15 years so worth every penny. The steampod ones sound good though too. When I'm ready to formally pass down my GHDs to DD who's hair rivals Hagrid's I may invest in the steam ones as a replacement.

PurpleDaisies · 10/09/2019 13:09

Fantastic-thanks everyone for the replies. Really appreciate it.

I use GHDs at home and my salon uses cloud nine. I don’t really see a massive difference in my hair after a salon cloud nine straighten if I’m being honest, cloud nine hasn’t eclipsed GHD at all!

They are easier to use to curl your hair though. I have both GHD Platinum and Gold and they’re both a bit too bulky on my long bob. The difference between the two pairs is marginal, platinum leaves your hair a tiny bit softer and smoother.

Whenaretheholidaysover · 10/09/2019 17:36

I bought a Remington set for about £30 after my ghds broke and I can’t tell the difference.

HollysTeflonSeptum · 10/09/2019 17:48

I've only ever had GHDs, they last for years. My last ones only broke as my idiotic ex stepped on them. Now I have the wider ones (GHD Max) which are just right as my hair is long thick and curly but I like it straight.

I've tried other ones at friends' houses etc but they're never as good.

bellalou1234 · 10/09/2019 17:51

Definitely cloud 9

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/09/2019 18:20

I got my first GHDs earlier this year and really like them.

I don't think much of the GHD heat protector though!

Minta85 · 10/09/2019 18:47

I’ve just swapped my trusty old GHDs for Cloud 9 and can’t tell any difference. They’re the same as my GHDs we’re back when they worked properly.

Greenvalleymama · 10/09/2019 20:43

On a friends recommendation I bought some Kipozi straighteners when my GHDs died. They're under £30 from Amazon and work just as well, if not better. Search for them on Amazon, the reviews show how good they are. I have the wide plates as my hair is thick and frizzy.

PurpleDaisies · 10/09/2019 20:45

Lots to think about - thanks all.Smile

I have very thick, very curly hair & Ive tried a variety of straighteners over the years, for me GHDs are the best by far ( cheaper ones don’t work for me at all) I tried a GHD brush in John Lewis which was very good (not strong enough for my hair but your hair doesn’t sound as problematic as mine!)

nancy75 · 10/09/2019 20:55

This is the brush, it seems much easier to style hair than the straighteners - if my hair wasn’t so mad I’d have bought it www.johnlewis.com/ghd-glide-professional-hot-brush/p3981753?sku=237948760&s_kwcid=2dx92700046625462749&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=CjwKCAjwk93rBRBLEiwAcMapURbP6o6gt6JWO1aQIQQsbt78S7JkA_52TKiDyw63GFtmD81rLm2cYhoCQUIQAvD_BwE

SweetNorthernRose · 10/09/2019 21:06

My friend recently bought some new ghds...apparently they've had a redesign and she says they're useless! The plates don't meet so don't actually clamp the hair to straighten it iyswim. Ghd have told her they should expand when they heat up but they don't. She does have fine hair though so they might work better with thicker hair?
I have cloud 9s which I much prefer to my old ghds. I also have some babyliss ones that I got for about £80 from boots which tbh are better than both!

U2HasTheEdge · 11/09/2019 00:10

I agree that the new GHDs are useless.

I have very thick hair and still find them crap.

LazyLizzy · 11/09/2019 00:29

Original GHD's were amazing. But when it came to replacing them a few years back the replacement straighteners were crap.

I have been using Cloud Nines for around 5 years, they were created by the same guy who invented GHDs.
