Wearing Converse in 40s? Photos

Shoeshelpplease · 08/09/2019 09:05

I'm having a problem with my foot and need to turn to more comfortable shoes for the time being.

Is it ok to wear Converse in your 49s with casual clothes? I'm not in touch with brands at all outside my usual comfort zone.

I'd be wearing them with turn up, chinos, 3/4 trousers and jeans.

Any ideas thoughts on these pairs?

I love the small platform on the black and white ones as so comfy!

I don’t think young people really wear converse now anyway, the style has carried on with the people who wore them when they were in their 20’s so it’s mainly 40’s+ in them now.

All the mums in our area wear the same uniform, navy jeans, converse, Breton stripes. The only difference is if your stripes are Joules or if you have a fringe.

I wear superga now, comfier and my last few converse had issue with the rubber coming away at the side. That said I want a pair of high tops at the moment.

With colder weather coming in I would get the first pair as the thicker sole will be warmer.

Bandjaxed15 · 08/09/2019 09:43

I am mid 50s. I don't give a shit if I'm not supposed to wear stuff. I love my Converse. But I have plantar in both feet and have to wear insoles. I wear fit flop boots in the autumn and winter (I am not built for summer). They are fugly but so comfy. I also had Birki boots last year. Slightly more stylish and heavenly. But am going off thread. I love all the Converse pictured.

Pinkarsedfly · 08/09/2019 09:44

They do make a farty noise when you walk, so that’s something to consider.

Bandjaxed15 · 08/09/2019 09:46

My 18 year old loves her Converse and bought a flame designed pair of hi-tops this year to wear for festivals. So I would disagree that the youngsters don't wear them any more. She lives Vans too and New Balance trainers. I find if they sell them in Schuh, they are down with the young folks!

One of the odd lessons of getting older is that lots of sporty looking shoes are agonisingly uncomfortable.

I've got a pair of Converse type sneakers which I love the look of but can't wear as the sole is hopelessly thin and each step jars my whole body.

Similarly, I love the look of the New Balance trainers that have been popular for a while, but have returned two pairs and given up as the foamy looking sole is actually brick solid and feels like walking with paving slabs attached to my feet.

Adidas trainers seem to be my comfort holy grail, but getting nice ones in my size (6.5 or even a seven) is a challenge.

But age be damned, wear what you bloody like. My 72 year old mum wears a biker jacket and has her toenails painted blue. It gives her great joy!

Bouledeneige · 08/09/2019 09:47

I wear converse and I'm 55. With jeans mainly. But I wear the more trainery ones with more support on the foot.

I have high arches and the more traditional ones are very flat so i find them tiring for walking for any length of time.

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/09/2019 09:49

I'm in my fifties and I have pink glittery ones.

Whattodo20192 · 08/09/2019 09:53

Wearing converse at 49 is fine.

I agree with others though that they might not be comfortable. Skechers are much more comfortable and there's a huge range you can choose from.

Fred578 · 08/09/2019 09:57

White ones are fine - the ones with writing are naff

StumpyinSomerset · 08/09/2019 10:02

I have a pair of those (I thought they were daps!) in red. I always tend to wear those type of shoes and I'm 54.

PersonalClown · 08/09/2019 10:04

I'm 40 and have 6 pairs.
I do agree that they have no support whatsoever and as I am getting older, I am turning more to Vans etc as they still have so much variety that I can have a choice of colour/style.

Herefortheduration · 08/09/2019 10:06

I'm in my 50's and have several pairs of converse, both shoes and boots, they aren't overly comfortable though. I wore them in my teens, I don't see why getting older would mean I'd have to abandon them now,

Milkstick · 08/09/2019 10:09

Fashion wise, yeah go for it - but the last time I had a pair they fell apart quickly. They're made for summer and not for getting far on foot. I haven't worn them for years because my feet are too wide now. If you're struggling, barefoot shoes might help (but depends on your foot issues and they are pricier). I live in DMs, I change the laces up (got some orange ones coming for halloween) and I'm mid 30s, and that won't change any time soon. (The boots at least. The age thing just keeps on going without my permission.)

Justwanttotravel · 08/09/2019 10:15

Yep, I do, and gazelles. 47 next month

HundredMilesAnHour · 08/09/2019 10:22

As others have said, I'm surprised that you're choosing Converse if you're having foot problems. Converse offer such little support that they tend to be avoided by people with foot problems! They can also take a bit of breaking in. I have some Converse x JW Anderson high tops that ripped by ankles to pieces within about 200 metres of walking. I haven't worn them since and I still have red scars on my ankles (not a good look!). At some point I will brave trying to break them in again but not yet.

I don't like the middle pair with the cheesy writing. Now that is middle aged cliche and very twee!!! But other than that, if you like them go for it. You can wear Converse whatever your age. Personally I think the classic white pair looks best.

Blankspace4 · 08/09/2019 10:24

Got two pairs of converse and they’re comfy vs ballet flats but not as comfy as my Toms which are cushioned and a similar look (skinny jeans) but waaaaay more comfy

Atalune · 08/09/2019 10:28

They hurt my feet/back as they are so unsupportive. However they are fine to wear, at any age.

I like Nike free run or Air Force one. Much much more comfortable.

drankthekoolaid · 08/09/2019 10:29

I'm 46 and I've got 4 pairs!

I wouldn't wear the ones with the writing on though, that's a bit naff imo.

Sorrysorrysosorry · 08/09/2019 10:38

I'm having a problem with my foot and need to turn to more comfortable shoes for the time being.

Then get a pair of sketchers. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn.
Converse are nice but not comfy.

BusterGonad · 08/09/2019 10:38

I thought they were made for the over 40s? I bought my first pair at 40. It's a rite of passage isn't it?

CountFosco · 08/09/2019 10:54

You can wear whatever you like at whatever age you want. Converse is a safe choice, personally I find them perfectly comfortable and walk for miles in them but I don't have any feet issues.

Vejas are the 'in' trainer with the middle aged insta crowd (environmentally friendly you see), you can get them from Arket. Novestas are also lovely and Toast sell them. Stan Smiths are more comfortable being a sports trainer rather than a fashion trainer and very classic. And whatever you buy it must be white!

fantasmasgoria1 · 08/09/2019 10:55

I am 44 and I wear big chunky gothic boots. I wear anything I want to and so should everybody else.

Greyhound22 · 08/09/2019 11:46

I find them horribly uncomfortable I gave my last pair away. They're really flat and they hurt my back and my feet.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 08/09/2019 12:26

I have a pair of fluorescent orange glittery Converse and breaking them in was a bloody nightmare - they're stiff as buggery. On the other hand, I have a pair of peach Adidas Gazelles that were heavenly straight out of the box.

I'm nearly 36. I wear what the hell I want, and have never looked or felt right in 'mum uniform', which is definitely the standard look where I live. My neighbour has only just turned 30 and favours the Joules/Boden/Converse look, and she always looks very nice because it suits her. Wear what makes you happy.
