How do you wear cropped/flared/wide trousers in the winter?

I'm a bit stuck with what sort of shoe and sock/tights (if any). I think it looks best with an interesting flat and bare legs, but I'd freeze. I don't think it looks great with a boot, unless maybe an ankle boot?

I'm sure I'm overthinking this.

Brogues and snazzy socks here.

Oly4 · 06/09/2019 22:38

They only
Look good with bare legs, sorry

megletthesecond · 06/09/2019 22:44

Personally I don't.
Winter is for slim cut and skinnies.

Wide legs are damp and flappy in the rain. A heeled boot can sometimes work though.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 06/09/2019 22:52

Knee boots under or opaque thigh highs (or popsocks that don't cut off your circulation at your knees) with brogues.

managedmis · 06/09/2019 23:42

I've bought a pair of these and don't plan on wearing them in winter tbh

Mind you, 'winter' here is minus 25 and snowing - +10 degrees and sunny I think I'd chance it with a pair of heels maybe! Or maybe ankle boots with a heel? Not sure how that'd look?

Spanielmadness · 06/09/2019 23:46

Don’t wear them - it just looks like you’ve got the size wrong and they’ve come up too short

AsTheWorldTurns · 07/09/2019 06:30

I think it's possible that they're not for winter.

I like the idea of brogues and snazzy socks but I don't think it's very me, I googled them for about an hour last night and I think I'd feel like an imposter.

I found a pair of skinny black wool trousers yesterday (Modern Rarity) so I think I'll stick with that + boots.

Well I think they look a bit lightweight for winter but autumn might be ok. Do you like the loafer look ? ( it’s not really my thing but you might like it). I’ve got some wider leg black wool trousers from Cos that I’m going to try with various pairs of silky socks I have from Arket and some black Dr Marten lace up shoes or some chunky grey Nike trainers. Sweater and slouchy black bag from Cos. Jobs a goodun.

AwkwardSquad · 07/09/2019 07:03

I’ve got some lovely dark khaki wide leg crops from Toast that I was thinking of wearing with ankle boots but I suspect that I’ll look even more like a reject from Dad’s Army than I already do in them. So maybe this particular pair are more suitable for the other seasons, when I can wear them with bare legs!

Divebar · 07/09/2019 07:30

awkwardsquad what weight trouser are they? Toast are currently styling everything with a chunky lace up ankle boot but are they from the summer season?

Soontobe60 · 07/09/2019 07:36

This is your problem, wearing them with single shoes!
A flat
A boot
An ankle boot.
(Unless you only have one foot, in which case go for it!)

AuntieStella · 07/09/2019 07:38

I think you probably don't .

They look pretty horrible in firmer (ie winter weight) fabrics anyhow. And there is nothing that covers the ankle gap well in colder weather. Though I suppose you could channel Jackie magazine from the 1970s, the Bay City Rollers and most glam rockers and wear 'witty' socks

Dizzywizz · 07/09/2019 07:40

I wear ankle boots with them

NiteFlights · 07/09/2019 08:19

I don’t think those particular ones would work as winter trousers. For a casual look when it’s not too cold yet, I think wide crops are okay with trainers and socks, but it depends on the fabric.

moonpiggle · 07/09/2019 08:31

Ankle boots

dudsville · 07/09/2019 08:56

I think two things need to be factored in, fabric weight and length.

Because of the wide leg style, winter versions need to be a heavier fabric in order to be warm enough and in order to pair well with jumpers etc..

The length is far trickier. My personal style is more librarian/professor, so I am ok with looking a little nerdy with the socks and flat ankle boots, brogues, loafers. I think if you opt for sleek, perhaps heeled ankle boots you run the risk of looking like an extra on the set of star trek.

AsTheWorldTurns · 07/09/2019 09:44

-I struggle with loafers
-I would equally feel like an imposter wearing trainers with dressy trousers, although I think it looks great on other people, it's all a bit Notting Hill for me.

I'm inclined towards these shoes, haven't bought yet because they're expensive:

www.matchesfashion.com/products/Balenciaga-BB-patent-leather-slingback-flats-1283633

but I'd freeze. So maybe with some herringbone black tights?

I love the cropped/flared + flats profile, incidentally I just wore the pair I linked above yesterday loved it so much that I thought 'how can I do this through the winter with wool trousers?'

OP posts:
AsTheWorldTurns · 07/09/2019 09:46

I think the ankle boot is really tricky. It is indeed all a bit star trek. Needs to be really a perfect distance from the hem of the trouser, and I'm not sure what that might be.

teta · 07/09/2019 09:52

Can someone please link to some snazzy socks?
I'm not sure what to wear with my wide trousers in winter and have brogues but no socks.

CountFosco · 07/09/2019 13:17

Snazzy socks

teta · 07/09/2019 14:35

Ooh thank you @CountFosco. Those are definitely snazzy enough.
I would love some knee length options like lace or fishnet in plain colours as well. I think they're hard to find.

Blueandredandblue · 07/09/2019 17:17

I wore a pair today with my DM boots

Divebar · 07/09/2019 21:06

Ok I laughed when I saw your shoe choice.... if trainers are too Notting Hill those shoes are very Chelsea. Look at Arket and & Other Stories for socks. TK Maxx have decorative knee highs in fishnet and Lacey patterns.

AwkwardSquad · 07/09/2019 21:10

Divebar they’re cotton canvas, medium weight I’d say. I’ll try them with ankle boots and see how they look. I had a narrower pair of crops on today with ankle boots, just a flash of bare skin, I think it worked.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/09/2019 21:16

I wear fishnet/crochet/lace tights or knee-highs underneath, usually leather trainers on my feet. I have knee-highs from Whistles, tights mainly from ASOS.

I have beautiful wide leg crops in wool, and cord, from Cos last year in various colours that I am excited to start wearing again soon.
